Now thats what I want to hear!

And even better news.... he's got a little brother.

Little brother?? When Khalil committed his '"little" brother was standing behind him and looked bigger than Khalil was lol. Can't wait to watch this d-line!!!! GBO

He played close to 320 in college. He slimmed down in the NFL to play outside in a 3-4. Khalil has the wide lower body like Dorsey.

"Dorsey was a solid 315lbs in college....he may have lost weight since then but he was a big ol' boy...."

I thought Dorsey was about 6'2 and 285 or so; I could be wrong.

D-line is going to be very nasty with KMac, Shy, Barnett, Maggit, Phillips, and the rest of the 2 deep is very very solid!

'i believe tn has finally reached a pt where dl js a huge strength'...in a year, or two it will be THE strength.

lets pump the brakes. freshman are still freshman. lets remember that for every Khalil and Shy Bammer and Georgie have a ***** rated OL...granted Georgia will find a way to lose.

Well, that's 2 of the better teams we play. But how about Florida, Missouri, Kentucky, Vandy, etc? Not to mention Barnett, Maggitt, Phillips are all ridiculous talents. And apparently Owen Williams, Vickers, and Danny O have developed very well themselves. Our defense will be our strength this year.

On a sidenote, our secondary is going to be ridiculous as well.

Is KM more John Henderson or A. Haynsworth or his own special talent ? Also is K. Phillips more like L. Little or W. Overstreet ?

K is K. It's early but KM looks to eat up more space than either big John or Haynesworth as great as they both were. I also think Butcher reminds me more of Overstreet; athletic but not quite elite but with a motor and nasty streak that will serve him well during his years there.

Gotta keep the races constant in any comparisons!

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNooo, Jack. I liked Scooby's post because he's correct...and you're not seeing the true picture here. I'm guessing you may just have too little time under your belt analyzing SEC football; or college football in general. I've been watching/listening to UT and SEC sports since the early '50's, and I can truthfully say that team 119's blend of DTs and DEs, athletic and very fast linebackers and a deep and exceptional group of DBs, is the most awesome defensive group I've ever seen at UT. That's ever...potentially,mind you, but it's going to be really hard to not meet enough of that potential to make this D one of the best in the nation. You're just comparing *s picked up by other SEC teams and not recognizing the overall dynamics provided by this team's being on the same page and their coaches maximizing their capabilities and mindsets. Maybe you'll recognize these advantages when the game's on the line and the Vols are the ones amping up their intensity...and kicking azzzz. I'll keep pumping sunshine, kiddo. You can just keep pumping your brakes on your own.:thud:

I feel exactly the same way.

I listened to to the Vols on radio in the mid to late 1950s. All of the kids in the neighborhood, Burlington, wanted be Johnny Majors, then Billy Majors. I remember one of the really neat things the Knoxville New Sentinel would do on Sunday's sport section; they would diagram the whole game on one page of newsprint, showing each possession and play by each team, the whole game, never saw that before or since.

But to your point, this is the most defensive talent I have seen at UT, ever. We may be a little weak at safety, but that is only because the seniors are going to get the start most of the time. By the end of the year the underclassmen are going to be getting more playing time and maybe starting. The rest of the defense is just ridiculously good. The other area of concern is starting middle LB, but even there it appears youth will be served and by the end of the season we may have a freshman starting. I have never seen anything that looks like this, by ANY team.

Last, with all this ridiculous level of talent, the combined level of talent and intensity on the field will make them even better as a team.

I think this year is going to be so much fun, I have never looked forward to the start of a season like this one.

Believe it was the Sentinel, that was the afternoon paper and the Journal was morning (both were morning on Sunday and may have been one paper).

Boy, are we dating ourselves or what?:blush:

By next year I honestly believe our D will be called the Big Orange Destruction team.

Simply because our D line and all the rest are going to totally Destroy the other teams O players.

When a teams O simply can not stop a totally Destructive D team the game is over for them.

When a QB and a RB have D players in their backfield most of the game they can't even get started.

Our DT's and DE's will be destroying them by themselves but whenever we dial up a blitz some of our other guys will hit the QB 1 second after he takes the snap.

It's going to be loads of fun watching our Destructive D totally Dominate!

We could end up by next year having 1 of the best D teams to ever play the game and making serious history in college football.

Keep on building those D bricks coaches!

Heh - How about the Big Orange Traffic Cone Defense?

Simply because they'll seemingly appear out of nowhere and they'll bring opponents' drives to a dead stop.

sameolvol and jlawso21, I tend to agree with your assessment. I don't go back quite as far; this season will only be my 48th as a Tennessee fan. There were some Dickey/early Battle defenses that did extraordinary things, establishing NCAA single-season records that still have not been broken, in terms of interceptions and turnovers caused. Their greatness, however, was predicated on the back seven; we were producing All-Americans at linebacker and defensive back on an annual basis. Those teams did not have the depth or overall talent in the defensive line that Butch is currently stockpiling.

Although the returns are preliminary, Butch may well be entering uncharted waters, given the fact that the only comparable period in terms of overall strength in the defensive line was during the first half of Fulmer's tenure. The obvious difference is that Fulmer was recruiting from a position of strength, i.e. Tennessee's status as a perennial top-10 program. When it becomes evident that Butch has reestablished Tennessee as a championship contender, I truly believe that there is there is an altogether different level of warp drive that he can take recruiting to, once he has elevated the onfield product to what old-time Tennessee fans are accustomed.

I'm not sure if either Henderson or Haynesworth are really good comparisons for Kahlil. They were both taller than Kahlil by about 2~3 inches, yet neither of them ever weighed as much as McKenzie does now. *Except Haynesworth, he ballooned up to about 350 once he got paid and went to the Redskins.

The guy that Kahlil reminds me of the most is Ndamukong Suh. Just a ridiculously strong and massive dude with surprising athleticism. Even though Suh is listed at 'only' 320. Honestly, KMac might have the biggest thighs I've ever seen on a football player (or human being for that matter). Kid is just huge!

L. Little is a good comparison for Phillips. Freakishly athletic DE. Although, Leonard was only around 235 when he played here, so KP already has about 30 lbs on him.

McKenzie and Tuttle could be as good, if not better than Henderson and Haynesworth when its all said and done.

Our DLine is gonna slay some fools!

Personally, I would love to see Khalil play at 315-320, rather than whatever his current weight truly is. I believe that he would be more explosive at that weight. It might be wishful thinking, but Warren Sapp comes to mind when watching Khalil. Please pardon the analogy, but Sapp had the strength of a mountain gorilla. One of the simplest but most impressive demonstrations of that strength that I recall was one play in which he was on the ground, he simply reached up with one hand and yanked the quarterback violently and forcefully to the turf. And he made it look so utterly effortless.
