Maurer emerging as QB1?

What I don't understand is the desire so many have to "pick a horse", they are all our players. May the best man win.
This. And I'm going to go out on a limb.....

No one in this thread was ever runner up for the Heisman as a QB. Heupel was.

No one in this thread ever coached a Heisman winning QB. Heupel did.

I'll go out on the limb and say the decision Josh Heupel makes about his starting QB will be the best possible pick among the candidates.

Did AP really say today that Maurer is running third in the QB race? Someone said as of today it’s Hooker, HB then Maurer and they’re going to look for the portal for another potentially.

I hadn't heard that about getting a QB out of the portal. Interesting. Makes me think they believe they've got B+ or A- QBs and they'd like to take a shot at getting an A. Also makes me think that they feel comfortable with who is rising up to take the ILB spots. From what I understand, because we had our incoming signing class plus some initial counters who signed and left, we actually don't have many spots (out of 25) to use on the portal. So if they spend one on a fourth QB instead of extra LBs, that would be noteworthy.

Where did you get this??? That can't be good if they are looking

He’s a Maurer hater and so is AP. Don’t read too deep into anything either of those guys have to say. Judging from what I’ve seen and heard, there’s no way they have any sort of depth chart and I very seriously doubt Maurer would be #3 if they had to make one today.

It’s been mentioned that they MAY look in the portal because of fear that one may leave. There are only 3 as of right now. Maybe that means there’s more to the Salter story? Maybe it means they don’t trust one or more to fully run the offense if #1 goes down (whoever that may be)? Maybe they just meant that they may pull the trigger on a big name if one should pop up? That could mean a ton of things. Why assume it’s the worst of all possibilities?

Unless he's improved... HB didn't show the arm strength to be a 5* QB last year. He isn't a runner.

I thought he looked poised and mentally good.

From a purely physical standpoint, Maurer (the 3*) has the most ability. He has the strongest arm and has better straight line speed than Hooker. His primary issue with "accuracy" has been decisions rather than ball placement.

I don't think any of these guys will be JG2. He is the most "unique" QB failure I can remember. Maurer, Bailey, and/or Hooker may fail. They may be awful. I don't think all three or really any will fail because they cannot process information fast enough. The decision making just never seemed to become second nature to JG.

I am working through a similar situation with a guy at work. He knows the right answers but cannot react to situations with confidence and without "thinking". Some people have minds that do not work that way.
Have you been at the practices?

I know for a fact that he knows someone who has. He’s not wrong
At this point I think it's coming down to BM or HH to start, still early in the year though. Both have legs and should be able to run the up tempo game Heupel wants to run and since JH tried recruiting BM that may give him the edge of HH if the competition is close.

HB looked good from what little we saw last year but at the same time the D gave him those short passes, so while he looked good. I didn't see enough to say the #1 spot was his.

I agree with what you're saying about the portal comment. It may be looking to replace Salter. I didn't see the video but if what was said here is true. His run in with the law didn't give him the wake up call he needed. Best to cut losses early and move on.

This season looks like it's going to be an exciting one offensively. Worried about the D though

I agree with you on the entire post. It certainly seems it’s between Maurer and Hooker at this point and should it continue throughout fall I’m sure it’ll be a close race and hard decision to make for different reasons. The D I agree with too. I don’t expect to have a better record because I think we will that soft on the first and second levels that opposing offenses will have their way. Kinda like UK in 2019, if they want to slow the game down, they can, 5 yards at a time. I don’t think many teams will take the approach of getting into a shoot out with us because I’m not sure that approach doesn’t play in our favor. Which is why the Ole Miss game may prove very interesting. Lane has that killer mentality and doubt he would want to take a chance getting beat at his own game. So I expect that one to be high flying and high scoring.

With Salter, I wish the kid would wake up. Idk how true the Instagram is but evidently “something of the nature” took place for it to be brought up in such detail. He’s such a talented young man that it’s a shame if he’s choosing “thug life” over his possible future.

Have you been at the practices?
No. I am going primarily off what we've seen from them in games plus various practice reports/sources from various angles of bias. Did I claim or imply that I attended practice? If I had that info and could tell it here... it would be a lot more detailed and specific.

But you know someone who has...cuz that’s a “fact”. 😏

Patrick Brown of 247 said Saturday it wouldn't surprise him if they got another QB from the portal after saying he wasn't sure any of the 3 we have were the answer at this time.
Wow...that surprising considering what we have heard prior..these reporters really seem down on UT

And?

With rare exceptions, I try to have multiple angles on something before drawing an opinion about it. What someone might tell me is taken at face value and compared to other sources, any first hand knowledge I have, "official" statements, etc. Then... I ask myself if history makes any of the conclusions I'm considering unlikely or impossible... or makes one more likely. Stuff like this isn't that important... but is a good mind exercise.

For instance in spite of some reports that Maurer and/or Bailey have been more impressive so far... I know that until one or both start taking more 1st team reps than Bailey the competition is still 3 way. Maybe those reports are overblown or maybe Bailey is doing enough to stay in it. I would be surprised if someone wasn't "leading" at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if the person leading now did not start vs BGSU.

He was taking another shot at 1vol8. This months nemesis

Do you know someone who attends practices?
Maybe.

But consider that a lot of "insiders" here ran with information that was believed by the teller to be true... that either changed or was misunderstood. Others "see" things and offer their perceptions that change later. They're not being dishonest... but one good day or one bad day that's spun into a conclusion might be misleading.

I will always take a longer view of anything I hear or see. If someone told me directly that Hooker was by far the best QB in a particular practice or week... I'd need something to confirm it before saying anything.

All that said... I don't think this scheme favors HB as much as the last one. He may still win the job but he has to adjust his game.

If they are looking in the portal IMO it means they believe we only have at best “C” Qb’s and are hoping we can upgrade.

Or it means that they have one/two good candidates but need another... or they believe that someone will be leaving after spring ball... or they believe Hooker will not make it... or some combination of the 3.

The UT sports media took this "hint" and ran negative like crazy with it. Even if they're looking at the portal, it does NOT mean all of the current QB's suck and are incapable of being a good starter.

There is a long way to go until kickoff. Something that is obvious from video and reports from practice is that these coaches can straight up teach. We haven't seen opportunity for QB development at this level since Coach Cut was around. I really think all of these guys have the chance to improve tremendously. That being said, I am not putting to much into who stacks up where right now. Much can be learned between now and the close of camp in the fall. Whoever gets the call will have been put in a position to have success. In the end, that is what we all are looking for.
