Matt Simms discussion (merged)

It was 58%. He is what he is and he is a game manager. As long as he makes the safe throws and relays on the run game we're good with him for two years.

Wow 3%-----OK----If Matt is starting for 2 years he will definitely be improving.

Ummm...did I watch the same game as some of you? I give Stocker 1 sure drop. The other 2 were awful passes by Simms. Granted, 1 hit his hands, but it was barely his fingertips and it was behind him. Anyhoo...here is my analysis.

He doesn't make quick enough decisions. How many times did he just hold onto the ball too long only to make a poor running attempt or something of the sort? Too many for my tastes. Although I will say he was improved in the 2nd half.

He misses the easy passes. I saw at least 2 balls bounce at the feet of a WIDE OPEN man in the flat or on a short/mid range out pattern. These are the things that ruin drives and will kill us against real teams.

But I do agree he was MUCH better than early 09 Cromp. Teams will at least have to respect the passing game a little bit...that is if we have any WRs left.

That said...it was week 1. Kellen Moore he is not, but let's see how much he improves.

Very good analysis. You watched the game.

I feel the high throws was mostly first game jitters and I have total confidence that it will be corrected by Saturday.I also feel like now that the coaching staff has actually seen the team play, they will know better what to focus on in preparation. I feel the team will improve quite a bit every week.As long as we don't make many mistakes (picks, fumbles, dropped passes, blocked fgs, etc.) we have a great chance to be competitive and keep the games close and possibly even pull off an upset or two.

Did you guys see those passes that Stocker dropped? Simms is not going to get it done, and neither is Bray this year so I say we take our punishment with Bray and let him develop with the rest of our Freshman on offense.

Notice who Bray's first 2 passes/completions went to? Our best offensive threat.

I did, and I totally get what you are driving at. I don't think Simms is even going to be a decent game manager. Funny we are in the huge minority in our thinking. I guess we will see in the comming weeks. I know one thing... I wish Crompton wad back for another rodeo.

Simms looks like he is getting it together. In the Orange and White game, Bray looked better to me. After seeing the UT-Martin game, I can see why Simms is the starter. He seems poised and confident. He has really good arm strength and delivers a nice throw even when under pressure. Also, like someone else said, Stocker dropped a few passes he should have caught and D. Moore dropped one that I can remember too. Every game that we play is going to be a battle and I feel good knowing Matt will lead us. GBO!

If he completed 100%, some of you would complain that he didn't complete 110%...

So true! Not gonna please everyone that's for sure.

Imo, I think he played pretty darn well for his first time out. I didn't like how he was pressing the issue with G Jones in the second quarter. I think he threw four or five straight passes to GJ. That may have been the play calling though. Those easy passes Bray had to Stocker in the forth quarter were called plays (see CDD on the Coach Dooley Show). As far as the footwork goes, apparently Darin Hinshaw thought his footwork was much improved thoughout the game (again see the Coach Dooley Show). If our QB Coach liked his footwork, that's good enough for me. For those that thought he looked confused...I definitely didn't see that, nor did Bray look confused. Both looked very comfortable, imo. I'm very encouraged by the play of both QB's. Bray's passes looked extremely crisp. I loved the Simms pass to Moore for the TD...perfect play call and perfect pass. Simms is our QB and he's got my support. Can't wait til Saturday. GO VOLS!

The biggest concern for me wasn't missing the easy throws (I really doubt that continues in week 2, contribute it to jitters), but staring down the receivers. Quick safeties and CBs will eat him alive for that. That said, he may have not been looking off the receivers for a very big reason, it's a progression read and THEY WERE OPEN. I had a pretty good view from where I was sitting and there was almost always yard(s) of separation between the receivers and their coverage.

I think a danger as a fan is assuming the players do things based on limited game footage. Too many seem to be willing to attest with zeal that that UT cannot run inside. In case you didn't listen to the players personal analysis, the zone read for the backs in the situations where they bounced to the outside was for them to bounce to the outside. Obviously not every play went for 4+, but don't be too quick to discredit UT Martin either, they wrapped up on tackles. UT Martin may not have wanted to give up the inside run, and the vols may have opted to take what was given (which is how zone blocking works). Also the line noticeably got stronger as the game went on.

I agree, yes we have loads more talent than them but who's to say they did'nt play out of their minds this game and we still made it look easy.

58% is better than 55%, just saying. In a perfect world we'd RS Bray and sit him his RS-FR year and let him compete his RS-SO.

You won't recruit too many hot shot qbs with that scenario. They don't want to sit two years. Bama even played McCarron lw----Redshirt frosh.

NO... he will not win one game for us this year singlehandedly... that being said we dont have the players around him so he can just manage the game either. Im glad I drove up for the ut martin game. This is going to be a really long season.

Simms is a monster. He could win every game for us singlehandedly.

He doesn't have to be a world beater QB for us to win. We need to play as a team and he just needs to be mistake free for the most part. If the receivers can separate maybe he can hit them most of the time. O line needs to give him time to do it too.
I feel much better with him back there than the one that graduated last season.

Hinshaw made the comment "we have to get the ball to Luke Stocker when he's open"....(it's something like that on the UTV video). Sounds like he saw some missed passes, too..but he seemed to like Simms' footwork.

It looked like to me Simms has some trouble leading a receiver. At times it looked like he waited until his receiver had completed the route then threw when he was stopped. I'm afraid Oregon's speed this week is gonna expose his lack of a quick trigger. I hope not.

Agreed. And, after seeing this and the O and W game, he seems to lock in on one guy, which could turn into 2 or 3 picks against the Ducks. On the other hand, the one guy he usually locks on is Jones so ...

And as a side note: several deep throws (generally underthrown, but...) and at least some attempts at using the middle of the field were all nice to see. Kudos to Chaney for that. I'll be surprised if Hunter doesn't get at least one long toss his way.

Simms was nigh on spectacular on Saturday, especially considering I've gone pale every time a UT QB dropped back for a pass the last two years.

He's got moxie, and he made good throws. This week, he gets to open up the playbook. He's going to lead us to a TD in the fourth this weekend to take a 20 - 16 lead and win the game.

You would make a fun boss. Showing up to work on time would probably warrant a promotion.

I am a fun boss.

There was nothing wrong with Simms' performance. He looked the part. Compared to Crompton, he looked like Manning.

Yeah, Crompton looked horrible in our first game last year and that was with Jones and Moore limited.

You gotta remember his lack of playing time. QB's are never world beaters during their first few seasons. Look at Peyton's first year here. Look at his first few years in the NFL, he lead the league in INT's. It takes work to be the best, and espically to be a good QB in the SEC.

The thought Simms did a good job in his fist D1 college game. First off, he made not mistakes and that is a very good thing. He passes seemed to be in the right location where only the reciever had a chance to get it. Yes, he overthrew a couple of passes, but even then it was on routes that called for the receiver to get under the ball. I would be more worried if he underthrew the ball. Plus the passes that were dropped. Simms will be good this year and even better next year. We have a huge size advantage with our recievers over Oregon's DB's and I look for Chaney to take advantage.

Defending Crompton? Come on.

Pointing out that he looked like John Elway against WKU isn't defending him. It was done to remind gibbs how someone can blow it against UCLA, Florida, etc after dominating an inferior opponent.
