Managing expectations tough with Vols' Trey Smith

What? Kid was freaking redshirted his 1st year. He needed to step his **** up.

C'mon man kids come to school with a wide range of development. Some like Trey come in with lots of expert training and individual attention. Some like Drew come in with none of that and steam rolled their high school competition with their size and athleticism and at the college level it takes skills development along with that to succeed. People need to get off Drew's back, the youngster will make us proud before he leaves The Hill IMO.

i'll be honest and say that after a RS year, i was expecting more from Richmond last year, maybe unfairly. OT is a tough position in this league considering how good most of the DL's are. it does take some time to develop and understand how to play the position at this level. much different than simply dominating at HS level because you're that much bigger and stronger than most anyone you play. playing field much more even.

so, with that said, i don't think it's necessarily worth a bust label on him yet. he's still got what, 3 years of eligibility left....and by all accounts Smith will be a contributor from day one, but as stated above, it will be different.

if Richmond does develop, we could be set at tackle for a couple/three years....

anywho, i'd rather have 2 5* tackles than still wondering about the overall talent level.

the O line all in all really does have a chance of being really good...thick and strong inside, and you could have two really good tackles.....S&C and Coach Wells....we'll see how it plays out....

Remember Richmond the next great Left Tackle and future first round draft choice now third year might not even start on a very average OL in the SEC so let him mash a few pimples before we put him in the NFL hall of fame.

Richmond should breakout this year

In the same boat wishing Richmond the best.
Folks need to give him a break left tackle is a very hard position to master.

It is. But now, in year 3, a true elite 5 star prospect should be able to perform very well, at a very high level. All indications from Spring says he is. Doug Mathews on record saying he took a huge step forward and pretty much has LT on lockdown. I sure hope this is true.

well that would certainly be great news. if the O Line can be what we think it can be, that will be the single biggest factor in whether or not this offense can be really good or not.

Richmond is the typical 5 star flop.

Trey Smith is the 5 star hit.

It happens folks.

Richmond has played ONE season in the SEC, as a RS Freshman last year, and improving as the season went along.

Perhaps your expectations of All-everything as a freshman were less than reasonable?

Perhaps your expectation of a particular poster is less than reasonable?

He just got you.

Jamal Lewis?

Not a fair comparison. Rb's can hit the ground running in college on natural ability where it is a much more difficult for lt's to acclimate to their position. You can rattle off a lot of names like Chubb, Michel, Fournette, Williams or Snell. But you can't name many lt's that mastered their position in their freshman season.

The good news is I think we have the luxury to redshirt Trey if we have to. We have plenty of experience and the best OL depth we've had in several years.

Richmond didn't fly out the gates, but he was noticeably improving as last season progressed. If Hall stays healthy we will be in good shape.

Of course we could also start Trey out at guard and let him get some game/speed experience before transitioning him to LT.

so were already calling a sophomore a flop and somebody who hasnt played a down yet a hit. can somebody explain how people logically say this

You aren't talking about people, you are talking about D4H.

Logically is not in his vocabulary. But what he does spread around should make the grass grow.

A prime example of bringing a player along too fast is Richmond last year at LT. He came along during the season and improved, but was utilized too soon because of need. We are in abetter place this season and depth is also better. He's gonna play but it will be as the staff sees fit.

Remind me: was it that Drew was utilized too soon, as a RF, or, was it that staff played him out of position?

To clarify: who will be starting over Trey?
