Malone at the Combine

How do you slow people down yet average 35+ ppg?

That mostly came in the second half of games as we try to make furious comebacks thanks to conservative play calling in the first half.

You can't defend Butch Jones and Mike Debord on how badly they under utilized the talent they had on this team.

Don't know why people act surprised by Mayock's assessment. Beating press coverage has been an obvious problem for us the past two years.
It's usually the case with burners that can take the top off of a defense... He needs to get some moves in his arsenal that will help I.e. Push, pull or swim or dip and rip....

I always loved his crispness in route running. He has good body control but I would like him to be more aggressive at the POA. Obviously great documented speed... A lot to like and some red flags like everyone else. Just needs to get to a team that can help him. Also he needs to put the work in to get to be an elite receiver... Wouldn't be a bad thing to go to a team with a veteran presence.

Did the 2nd half stop counting or something?

Agreed. Only thing I was curious about was that Mayock went straight to that while ignoring that Malone had just run 4.41, which at the time was either the fastest or second fastest WR 40 time run. But yes, teaching his WRs how to get off press man coverage was a struggle for Azzani, as demonstrated by his WR corps for 4 seasons.

After his comments during an interview I doubt we see another 5* wr during CBJ time here. Something about how other schools gave their WRs more opportunities to show their skills.

If we actually establish a dynamic passing game and develop some receivers, Malone's comments will be forgotten. Recruits judge more by what they see happening on the field rather than the comments of an ex-player.

I like Malone and look forward to seeing him drafted, but I agree with him that he was underutilized here.

Numbers don't lie so here are the SEC numbers:

Dobbs:
3rd in passing yards
1st in passing TD's
1st in passer rating
2nd in completion percentage
3rd in yards per attempt

Malone:
3rd in receiving yards
3rd in receiving TD's
2nd in YPC

Its amazing what the numbers are considering we didn't have an attack.

I didn't get to hear his comments, what were they?

Malone did look good yesterday. I'm sure after seeing his numbers some scouts went straight to his Tennessee stats .. only to find he was waaayyy underused at UT. Like AK. Dobbs also looked good. Best one in his group i thought.

Actually, sometimes they can and do. You cite those numbers in the context of a down year for SEC QBs. A true freshman who has trouble throwing the ball won SEC offensive player of the year. Another true freshman, who completed 54% of his passes started at Georgia. SCar went to a true freshman who should be in Highschool to be their starter the last half of the year. The best pure passer in the SEC, Chad Kelly, went down to injury and missed the last 3.5 games of the season. LSU still had no qb. Auburn still had no qb. Same is true of Vandy and Kentucky. The SECe division winner Florida didn't have a qb to speak of either. Only Arkansas and Missouri had guys who could really sling for a full season.

Our passing offense was much better last year, that's true. But it's true primarily because of the last 4 regular season games of the year.

When compared in conference, we were still only 6th best in yards passing per game, and were only 10th in passing attempts per game......and those numbers were 62nd and 90th respectively, when compared to the nation, which backs up the notion that WRs at UT tend to lack in opportunities.

Was that before or after your prediction of 4.35?
Because that's what I remember.

He's always hedging Charger. He bumped up from 4.35 to 4.39 yesterday, after getting burned by AK on Friday and Dobbs earlier in the morning. A lot of, if not most of people figured Malone would run somewhere in the 4.4s.....and 4.39 is awfully close to "the 4.4s".

Lol,yep.
I've noticed multiple predictions on many things, many times.
Then, after the fact, he resorts to the closest.

There's no downside to running it a second time

He was cramping to the point he didn't participate in any of the remaining drills. He had already put in a top 5 vertical and top 3 broad jump among receivers. He also has a pro day coming up.

It's actually astonishing to consider the question if he hadn't been cramping that his 40 could have been even faster.

I'm just making the point that they don't average your two runs or anything. Even if you run slower the second time, they're going to take your fastest one.

Ah, you meant in general, not just in the case with Ross, gotcha.

He was cramping, and what if his second 40 time had been significantly lower? 4.22 was out of sight. Just stick with and move on imo. Steve Smith on the NFL Network concurred.

The lack of film will make Malone a 4-5 round wr that will develop into one of the best WRs in the league. By the end of his career he will be considered on of the best steals in the draft. No one will ever over take Brady but he will be one mentioned.

If I had a dome every time this was said about one of our guys, Id have. ..like a bunch

I predicted 4.39 right before the combine.

My final prediction is the one I give right before the event.

Before that I'm just posting flow of consciousness. Its ever changing.

Actually I just post in a flow of consciousness manner. Which means at any given moment what you see is what I'm thinking at that time. Some day I might be thinking one way and another day I might be thinking something else.

That's how geniuses like myself work.

We are ever evolving.
