Mac vs PC (split)

Not unless Apple starts selling $500 computers. I love my iPad, but I don't see tablets displacing computers at this point.

So, I had been considering sharing this - earlier this week I woke up, grabbed by iPad to read while I took a no. 2 (that was the gross part) and went about my morning. After I was done, I sat the iPad down on the tub next to the throne and didn’t notice until I was finished showering that the iPad was still there. It was between the shower curtain and liner but completely soaked after a 15 minute shower. I dried it out, prayed and it fired right up. I’ve had no problems with it at all since then, its charged fine, plays music fine – everything is 100% normal…

I’ll try to keep the electronics out of the shower next time tho – ain’t trying to push my luck

Salt water is what damages electronics

That said, if something like that happens then bury it in rice for a day, should be alright

When it comes to surfing the web and watching video the Asus Transformer TF300 T smokes the new Ipad, I have both and it is like night to day difference. Add the docking station to the Asus and it is very nice.

This whole $200 per year thing is silly. A $600 computer can last 6 years with very little maintenance. Jut don't download a bunch of stupid ****, and it'll be fine.

It may sound silly, but when you see $600 computers fail just over a year of normal or little use, you tend to understand how the parts manufactures want things to work. There isn't a $600 computer out there that they want to last more than 3 years. I've had this conversation with several parts suppliers.

Guy brought in a Lamborghini ASUS laptop the other day. That thing was epic. Even had taillights on it.

What world do you live in where people intentionally make less reliable products and stay in business? Laptops have progressively gotten more reliable, as most technology would. And a lot of the companies that made unreliable products have taken serious hits (HP, Gateway, etc.). But even those companies make laptops now that really last.

Right now, just about any laptop you buy for +$400 should last you +5 years given that you don't bog it down with programs you don't need, or download stupid ****. But that goes with most anything. If you misuse it, you can't expect it to last long.

Except my iPad - which apparently is water resistant.

Using windows at work for at least 8 hours a day, it seems natural to have that same operating system on the PC at home. It's interesting though, when I was going to graduate school at night, most of the grad students preferred Mac's, even the professor.

I don't think Mac's are going to make a big dent until their prices come down. I just don't see most businesses who weigh the bottom line, paying more for the same hardware you get with a DELL, IBM, etc for about 1/3 less.

The price of Macs won't come down. I dont think Apple cares if they over take Windows. They have cornered the market they want and the mountain of cash they are sitting on proves it. Their focus appears to be on the mobile market anyway.

I know a guy that works for OIT at ETSU and he said every year the requests for Macs by faculty doubles. Earlier This month he told me he finally got a MacBook just to keep up with the needs of the faculty. Of course he uses bootcamp to service the windows users.

Fwiw he said he loves OSX so far.

It won't be a total displacement anytime soon but the shift has started. The tablet market is exploding while the PC market has been sluggish over the past year and half. Right now tablets are more like an accessory. But as people start to use them more and more they will start to see their PC as the uneeded accessory. Of course this really depends on what the users needs are and if tablets will meet them now or in the future.

Using my personal expeirence I use my iMac when I need to run robust software like Adobe CS. But my casual web browsing and such is done on my iPad or iPhone. I've got a windows laptop I never turn on since getting the iPad.

My 63 year old mother has a windows laptop but then got an iPad and rarely uses the laptop for anything anymore. She takes the iPad with her nearly every where.

Then I have another friend who mainly uses his iPad but did just buy a sub $300 computer to run forex software and that's it.

Sweet! I've been looking forward to it. More iOS features are being integrated. I may wait until after I go on vacation to upgrade.

So the wife and I dove in and upgraded our laptop. Walmart brought back their 18 months no interest and it was something we couldn't pass up on right now with my last year of college starting in 2 weeks.

What internet antivirus would ya'll recommend? Is a free one worth the risk? I know some of them are highly thought of. Couldn't tell ya what she had on her last laptop...

Is it worth having a complete internet security suite? (Like Norton)

Thanks in advance

AVG and avast free can both get the job done

Paid anti virus have some stuff that can make them worth it like if it's a work computer or if you have kids but if it's just a personal/homework deal then free is okay

Also get ccleaner and malwarebytes

If you go paid, get ESET NOD32 5, it's the best in the business.

Free, I'd go MSE + Spybot + Malwarebytes. Regular scans with those 3, and the host file protection of Spybot, and you should be fine.

Upgraded to Mountain Lion today. So far I like how iCloud is more integrated with apps such as Numbers, Pages, and Sketchbook Pro. Its nice to be able to enter data on my iMac and have it update on my iPad and iPhone and vice versa without having to sync.

Reminders being separated from iCal and Notes separated from Mail will come in handy. Most of the time when I want to set a reminder I just tell Siri but I may start using it to make lists and such now too.

iMessage will come in handy too. 90% of the people I text with regularly are on iPhones so that basically means my phone can stay in my pocket while working on the computer.

Safari is becoming more Chrome like. The share button will get plenty of use with iMessage. I used to put links in the reading list then go to my phone to message them to friends. This will be much easier. The iCloud tabs button isn't doing anything for me. Seems like I read that may be waiting on iOS6 to function properly.

So far I would definitely say it is worth $20.

New iMac announced today. Ditches the optical drive. Has a super slim angle profile but still bevels out some toward the center. Looks sleek. I'm not really a fan of not having an optical drive though. Not so much because I use it all the time but because I want if I'm given a disc or need to burn one for some one.

Fusion Drive (SSD/HDD) sounds awesome. Its a hybrid drive the learns what you use the most and automatically moves apps and files to and from the flash memory for higher performance.
