LSU Postgame Report

I have no real basis on this thinking so I am not willing to bet on its accuracy but my hunch is i think if Barnes had it to all
Over again he wouldn’t have brought bailey in

I agree
At first I hated the decision to land Bailey. I figured Tennessee needed help “now” and had plenty coming in and could possibly get someone better, as a 2020 “recruit” addition.

However now I like the addition (of Bailey).....”if” he is to play point. Tennessee needed some solid point help (for 2020) and Bailey was the 19th rated point a couple years ago......now with a couple years (college years) under his belt, and a year in the system......he could be a very valuable addition (again assuming he plays point and assuming he is pretty good).

Tennessee should be pretty much set at virtually every position for next year....except for the point......and if Vescovi and Bailey can nail that down......Tennessee is set.....they will even have plenty of competent backups.

Now if they want him for a shooting guard......it simply makes no sense.

We will have UNC, Michigan State, Villanova type talent next season. Those programs regularly make noise in the Big Dance. If we get a couple breaks go our way, I think we will have the talent to seize the opportunity, ourselves. That still doesn’t mean we will.
Ehhh thats the part that scares me that people think that. We most certainly will not. Not next year. We will be on our way there but not quite. We will still be sorely lacking in the post. it takes time. though I do agree nothing is outside of the realm of possibility. I just try to stay out of the clouds because that is why people get so bent out of shape setting unrealistic expectations. As long as CRB is our coach nothing is impossible some things are just implausible for now. Even if Turner was fully healthy and Plasvic got cleared preseason we would have been at best a bubble NCAA team. We as a team are sorely lacking in size, shooting and ability to consistently penetrate/beat guys off the dribble. Turner only addresses one of those (penetration) and the other partially (shooting). Plasvic would have helped with size but he can't be on the court the whole game. Next years roster makes me excited. We will have a lot of seniors for the first time in a long time and most will play big roles. Fulky, Pons, Bailey, and JJ. All of them will be solid players next year and if the new guys coming in are as good as advertised and push them for minutes we are in good shape. JJJ ain't gonna be a 1 and done unless something miraculous happens soon.
ON, Plasvic and Vescovi will be big contributors next year and them getting a chance to grow now will pay. The more I look at the roster and the way guys are playing now the more I get excited about next season but we also have to worry about how well UK and UF are recruiting. they will be no Joke but SEC champs next year is a good chance. We have a coach that can develop that's why I'm not worried at all about this team's future. anyway im off work catch u guys later

Somebody posted the size of this past seasons final four teams and none of them had a traditional center and they were very similar to our current roster. I would like us to get another athletic big but it sure doesn't look like a necessity anymore. I am excited about next years team but the realist in me knows these guys probably need to be sophmores and Juniors before we really compete at the highest levels. Go Vols.

Texas Tech had former Vol, Tariq Owens, 6'11 rim protector and rebounding specialist. What I think Cardwell would/could do for UT in a Kyle Alexander role, for the next 4 years or so

I think you misunderstood me. I’m not saying we will have UNC, MSU, Nova type talent across the board. I just mean that the guys we have coming in next year are the kinds of players that those schools recruit. And you add that to a similarly talented sophomore James, a similarly talented sophomore Vescovi, a senior Pons, a senior Fulk, an eligible Plavsic, an eligible Bailey, and you have a really good blend of elite talent, experience, and role players who aren’t being asked to carry the load like they are, now. How many teams across the country can say they have the kind of talent we have on paper, next year? It’s a short list.

Sure, we will have our deficiencies in the post, but as you said, we don’t play in a vacuum. Just as other teams will improve, so will other teams have deficiencies, as well. Few, if any, teams out there will be perfectly built, and in college basketball, good coaches can scheme around minor deficiencies.

As for being in the clouds, well, you don’t seem to be too familiar with my post history. I never get too high, and rarely get too low on our team because the truth almost always lies in between. I am also quick to call down those who post in a manic fashion, as well. I have defended Scotty Hopson and to a lesser extent, Robert Hubbs many times from our fans’ harsh and unfair criticisms borne solely in the ridiculous expectations they had for both players because of the 5 ⭐️s next to their names. My personal prediction for this year’s team was 18-13, which can be found in the preseason predictions thread, when many of our fans were predicting 22, 23, 24+ wins.

They don't have traditional centers but they have guys that can play in the post. It's one thing playing a stretch 4 at the 5 we are playing big gaurds at center. Almost no big name teams has traditional centers. The problem is our guys are to small to bang but can't stretch the floor. Plasvic changes things a lot and I think another off-season in the gym will get ON where he needs to be. I totally believe these guys will be good I've said ad nauseum Barnes develops guys. A lot of our guys have potential. Right now they are l not well rounded enough. Good defender terrible offensive player etc.

Right now, and I said it early in the season and was made fun of, Yves Pons is the most consistent player on our team by far. That's a mic drop statement. I am of the camp that always believed (because CRB develops guys) but Pons was the Basketball equivalent of JG last season and most of this off-season. So it's a tad ironic.

I think Bailey might be a waste. Vescovi/Johnson/Springer/Walker/JJJ will most likely be the guard rotation next year. Pons/Fulky/ON will be the posts and Tennessee would like to add a post player. Where is Bailey gonna get minutes?

I don’t see Walker getting guard minutes, jmo...

Vescovi/James
Springer/Bailey
Johnson/Gaines/Pember
James/Walker/ORN
Fulky/Plavsic

Even backing up I think Bailey is a Top 8 rotational player, maybe higher depending on is Barnes decides to go more small ball. I think his willingness to play defense and his outside shooting are going to be pieces next years team needs.

So maybe 10 mpg for Bailey? We know Barnes likes small rotations and goes 8 deep at most. Have we had 8 guys average 10 mpg under Barnes? Maybe 2017-2018?

That’s pretty much where I’m at.....right now...the way things “look” he would only get minutes as point....if he is a good competent point guard.

If he is a good “point” I could certainly see him gaining minutes.....if not.....there really isn’t a need.

Pons going pro?

I won’t be shocked if you don’t end up needing to switch Vescovi and Springer in your lineup above. And you don’t list Pons.

Springer/James/Vescovi/Bailey
Vescovi/Springer/K. Johnson/Bailey
James/K. Johnson/Gaines
Pons/Walker/Nkamhoua
Fulkerson/Plavsic

This is likely not the starting lineup in game 1, necessarily. No reason to start a freshman at PG when you don’t have to, but I won’t be shocked if this isn’t the lineup by January.

I think there is an unknown entity to add to the PF or C spot to come, too.

Plavsic needs to be a good player and needs to be our starting center. We desperately need a true center. Having a guy that hustles is all warm and cozy but 5 rebounds a game in 35 minutes does not cut it.

11 guys did in 2016-2017, 10 did in 2015-2016...#8 was around 18mpg those years.

2 rebounds from our PF in 35 minutes and 0 from our backup in 10 really doesn’t cut it then.

We haven’t actually been outrebounded by many opponents, so I don’t know why everyone is so worried about Fulk’s rebound totals. When you watch the games, he’s boxing out, and opposing centers aren’t getting many offensive rebounds unless he had to do help defense.

Our guards are very good at rebounding but we still need more from the 4 and 5 position. We haven't gotten much done on the offensive glass lately.

Yeah, that’s true. Fulk only gets like 1 a game despite effort.

Maybe Bailey will be great, but he's a true head scratcher based on needing ready bodies this year and what we were recruiting for next year. This team could have used a solid grad transfer in the post. There were others besides Blackshear out there. We hopefully are done with signing multiple projects each recruiting cycle and hopefully have learned not to put our eggs in a basket that the NCAA is carrying like we did with Plavsich.

I do wonder how many people on the team right now will be here in 2021. Barnes hasn't minded putting people on the road and a bunch of guys have been recruited over already and more should be next cycle.

We came into this year with an open scholarship, though, so Bailey didn't prevent us from taking another grad transfer. We just opted to hold the spot, which allowed Vescovi the option of enrolling early.
