Lots went wrong but #2 is QB1 [JG discussion, merged]

I'll also add that JG and Coach Pruitt had to win over the fan base after the terrible start. They both have done that to a high degree. Pruitt reminds me of Saban in how he's such a perfectionist. Never completely happy even after a big win. I like him and credit him for handling things as he has with JG. He's not perfect and he'll be the first to admit that. Even tonight, he could have done better with that last drive before the half with timeouts and the clock. But, I feel that he's as hard on himself as he is on any player and he will continue to get better. Looking forward to beating Candy and a bowl victory. 8 and 5 this year. 10 win season next year and building!

He has lots of guts and is tough as nails, I think he is a fantastic kid and is giving his all for Tennessee. I am just saying all of those on here acting like he is the second coming are comparing him to the first part of the season and not looking at things objectively. I am truly happy that his play has been better, but he is a Senior so it should’ve been with game 1 of the season.

There will be a QB battle during the offseason. JG, Maurer, Hill and Bailey. The type of players we need and the winners we need want that type of competition. It's safe to say JG stays and battles for the job, it's his to lose at this point. The only QB imo that is leaving any time soon would be Shrout

Jarrett Guarantano had the high point of a rocky junior season Saturday at Missouri. Then the Vols quarterback shed light on the lowest point, referencing death threats he received and messages his sister, also a Tennessee student, received. And he thanked his teammates for their support through it all. “There were so many guys that were there for me throughout the death threats, the mean messages to the sister," Guarantano said. "They were all there for me and it really meant a lot.”
Jarrett Guarantano says he received death threats during 2019 season

“I’m a Tennessee Vol,” he said when asked whether he plans to return to Tennessee. “I mean, I’ve put my body on the line for the past three years. I’ve put my mind, heart, soul into this. I love Knoxville. I’m a Tennessee Vol. I’m just thankful that we get the opportunity to get another two games going, and after this year, then next year, we’ll get on a little roll. But, I’m a Tennessee Vol.”
Jarrett Guarantano indicates he'll play senior season with Tennessee football

Has 22 starts and 30 appearances in his UT career...has thrown for 4,306 yards and 29 touchdowns with just ten interceptions on 344-of-554 pass attempts in his career...his career completion percentage (62.0) ranks third in UT history and his 1.78 interception percentage is the lowest in UT history (minimum 400 attempts)...He set the Tennessee record for consecutive passes without an interception (166) in 2018...he has two career 300-yard games and ten career multi-touchdown pass games.

Passing yards look good on paper, but let's take off the orange colored glasses for a minute. He missed some wide open receivers and still struggles with touch on short passes. 3 years in those should have already been fixed. Still a great win, just looking at it like CJP does. Inspect what you expect.

The weak link is Will Friend , still cant run the ball. This team is a OL coach away from being good on offense. Still have to be able to run the ball at some point. The wildcat needs to be put on the shelf. Its always a wasted down.

Not long ago some folks wanted him to transfer.

I still think we would be better if he transferred, yes he had a good game, but they are not very often, and we still didn't score that many points even with a good game from him. I think we have and will have better qb on the roster, they just need some game expierence. And also we won't have callaway and jennings to bail him out next year.

Haha, I mean where else is he going.

Rutgers is where I imagined him ending up if he ever transferred. I mean if Dormady can transfer, start and put up pretty good numbers then JG definitely could. Entering the draft is another option. Hell Kyle Allen couldn't remain a starter at Texas A'M or Houston, goes undrafted then basically took Cam Newton's job at Carolina. But I'm hoping the light has finally come on for JG and has a helluva SR Season..

So you bash people for bashing JG while bashing Maurer in return, got it![/QUOTE

We will not beat a good team with jg. Yes he is better now than the others I agree. But if either of the other two qb had started the season they would be much better than jg now imo. Jg did have a good game, I just fear when he knows he is starter he will go rogue again. We could have beat bama this year because they were struggling to score when tua went out. And with all this said this late in the season I agree he should be the starting qb. But next year each qb should be given a fair chance to compete. If not I am afraid we will lose maurer, and he will be a great qb somewhere.

Maurer was in one play. Qb’s are not responsible for a hard hit by a Defensive player on a Wr. That is a play call scheming issue. Calloway would have likely been hit hard even if the ball was on target. He had Calloway in his sights and there is not anyone who could of stopped it.

QB's can be responsible for hard hits if they hang the WR out to dry. Thats why you hear announcers like Aikman, Romo,Esiason and Simms mention putting the ball to where you don't get your Receivers killed. WR's are gonna take vicious hits at times regardless but QB's can also get their WR's lit up with bad ball placement.

He has played better, but don’t kid yourself he is the same JG we have known all along. I like the kid, think he is a a fighter and tough as nails but he is not the second coming of Peyton Manning. Before you say anything, I don’t think Maurer is either. With better QB play this season, we would have at least a couple more wins maybe even 3 or 4.

I 100% agree with you on this. I still say if either of our other two qb had started the season we could possibly be undefeated. I know this may sound crazy but I am basing my opinion on the backups being much better than they are now with the game expierence with the first three games and if they could have been given all the extra snaps in practice with the ones. Jg is still jg, yes he had good stats but still we don't score enough points with him. But at this time he is our best because it is too late in the season for either of the other two to perform better than him.

Such as jg on many of his passes

WR didn't help him out.we left atleast 10 off the board from drops.

Great win. Let's stomp candy into the ground.

They also bailed him out on numerous 50/50 balls. I would say the drops and plays the WR's bailed him out evened each other out. Yes there was a few drops but Jennings,Calloway and Palmer more than made up for it. They helped him out quite a bit.

It's gona be very hard to replace jennings and callaway. We don't win this game without either of them. Not taking anything away from the other players, but they bailed jg out many times in this game 50 50 passes. I was not a butch fan but he did recruit some very good players. I sure hope we blow vandy out next week so our backups can play and let them pass, you never know when you are gonna need them.

No doubt, we are badly gonna miss Jennings and Callaway next season. Hopefully Palmer doesn't leave early and Brandon Johnson returning hopefully helps. Between Gibbs,Tillman,Keyton,Means,Hyatt and hopefully another highly rated WR in this class will help soften the blow of losing those 2.
