I agree with your point about exposure, but just one note since I couldn't get the article to link. These were all regular season numbers last year. The article came out December 1, 2021.
Ah, thanks. I'll amend my earlier post to reflect that reality.

The more I think about it, though, the more formulaic this is. And has next to NOTHING to do with fan bases.

Say the average CBS college football game has 5 million viewers (I checked, it was 5.23m in 2021). Some teams get a bit more, some a bit less, but it all rides right around 5 million.

Say an ABC or ESPN / ESPN 2 game gets 2.5 million on average. Again, some variance, but pretty predictable.

And an SEC Network game gets 750,000, on average.

Then an ESPN+ paywall game only gets 50,000 or so.

After you know numbers like that, it's really just a matter of counting up how many of each kind of game a team gets in the season. We can use Tennessee as an example:

Say just 2 of our games were on CBS. That's 2 x 5m = 10m views.
Another 2 games were on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC. So another 2 x 2.5m = 5m views.
Then 4 of the remaining matches were on SECN: that's 4 x 750k = 3m views.
And the final 4 were behind the ESPN+ paywall: 4 x 50,000 = 200,000.

Add all that together, you have 18.2 million views over 12 games, which == 1.52m views per game, average.

That's off a bit; they report our average at 1.51m. But that's okay, I just made up most of these numbers (the 5m/game for CBS is real).

It really does come down to the decisions corporate TV producers are making, and has very little to do with fan bases.

Go Vols!

Not sure what we are laughing about. Vandy is a cellar dweller and knows it. We claim to be a football school and we can’t even crack top 5 in the SEC. Arkansas is beating us here, in fact basically all of our rivals that matter are.

Nice job, VolCody. I love my Vols, but I do concede some of our fans need to be reminded what humble tastes like. We get a bit too high and mighty at times, including times it isn't justified.

People need to take consideration of the schedules played .
Arkansas played Texas at night, aTm, UGA, Bama, LSU and Penn State.
Auburn played on ABC primetime at Penn State, plus UGA and Bama on Thanksgiving weekend.

We played Pitt at Noon. We were very rarely in the tier 1 game. I expect us to have a larger viewership the fall.

This has to be Non-SEC games right?
I mean like others have said if you are watching UT vs Fla, how do you know what fan is watching?

I've spent way too much time looking at this but it is so far beyond bogus the light from bogus will take 8 million years to reach it.

Taking the average per game viewership for each of Vandy's SEC opponents and totaling that up yields 12.115 million. Now Vandy-Bama isn't going to draw the same number of viewers as the Iron Bowl so let's assume the average viewership for all of those SEC teams when they play Vandy drops 90%. That means the total viewership for Vandy in its SEC schedule is 1.211 million. Assume not a single person watches any of Vandy's nonconference games and then divide 1.2111 million by 12 games for the full season gives 100,958 viewers per game. That's close to 3 times more than Vandy's average viewership of 37,000 per this graphic.

We have way more fans than Arkansas. It’s not even close. This article is straight garbage. I’d have the Vols top 3 no question. Just look at neutral games and how well we fill the stands.

Of course, many of these schools got carried on either broadcast or higher tier cable channels, increasing their viewership accordingly. Also, the very face that many of these are SEC West gems mean they get the viewership boost of PLAYING Bama on tv as well

FWIW, we get a 3:30 ABC game vs Pitt in a few weeks. That should get a big #. We’re the best game of the afternoon because Bama and Texas are on Fox’s Big dumbass Noon kickoff. Florida and UK are at 7 that night.
