LNS: Is the Hornet’s Nest Gone?

Apparently UT is selling tickets at “market pricing“ for almost every home game. Some are what goes unclaimed in LF for the visitor’s but many are in prime sections as well.

EDIT: The seats that UT is selling are designated as “Standard Admission” and are displayed in blue. These seats are different than the Reseller Seats which are displayed in red. OJJs examples were standard admission seats priced at $69 and $109. These were likely priced using TMs “dynamic pricing” in which algorithms are used to set pricing. UT can also set the pric8ng or use dynamic pricing with a floor or minimum price per section.
Remember when you could throw a can of green beans in the box at the entrance and choose your seat?

It will be very easy to do a heel turn on Danny White the minute we're not winning in something. Baseball seems the most stable so it'll probably be one of the other sports.

As far as losing the "hornets nest" enviroment, I think it's absolutly the case. However, I do think some of it is natural. 2021 will probably never be topped. It had everything lining up. Everyone was desperate to be in an enviroment like that after dealing with covid. It was our first really good team in, what, 16 years? You can't replicate the climb. I would kind of relate it to beating Alabama in 2022. Years of desire went into making that crowd so crazy. I don't care if we win five national titles or build a 16000 seat stadium, it won't be able to top Gilbert's HR for an isolated electric moment. I didn't have expectations at that point, only excitement to be winning again.
Or Max Ferguson walkoff against the Hogs.... or Evan Russell's third home run against Vandy.... or the dingerfest against LSU in supers.

2021 certainly had it's memorable moments.

I've been very lucky to be at a lot of great UT sporting events in my life in a lot of sports. Just about everything from the late 80s til now in Knoxville, and several on the road.

Nothing comes close to that Gilbert's grand slam. Nothing.

And you nailed the phrasing..."electric moment". I don't know if it lasted for 15 seconds or 15 minutes, but I remember seeing the ball fly and my mind absolutely going into some lizard brain space where everyone just yelled and bounced around inside LNS. Didn't feel real.

The whole athletic department had been pushed around for going on more than 10 years. We finally had a team with enough grit to push back... and they went into the 9th down to Wright State. Felt awful. Felt like the previous 10 years... until Gilbert vaporized that ball.

I was so pissed off, I drunkenly fell asleep. Woke up just in time to see the bat flip king throw that hoe down the first base line. I’ve never woken up from a drunk slumber so quickly

Has the former Hornet’s Nest Lost Its Stinger?
Has LNS lost its fastball?
Are the fans spoiled by this 12-6 top 10 team and the past success?
Has the “wine/whine and cheese” crowd taken over?
Has moving the student section into RF hurt the buzz?
Are fan expectations too high?

I’ll hang up and listen….
The wine and cheese crowd hurts us in all sports

I think at one point I paid something like $100-125 for a season ticket. My wallet misses those days. I also miss all the room to stretch out at LNS because of low attendance no matter the opponent.

OTOH, I don’t miss worrying about Tennessee not making it to Hoover, and I liked going with a couple of friends and one of my kids to Omaha last year.

There are things to be grateful for 🙂
I got in for $175/seat. $350 for the season was a steal even with the 4 hour drive from AL every other weekend. Now I’m shelling out $2500 for the same 2 tickets plus the drive/hotel/food all weekend.

That’s a real commitment you have with the travel time and those costs.

-The biggest one: From the ones I've talked to...the students hate, and i mean HATE, the new setup. Right Field isn't a problem, its the layout. And honestly, I don't blame them. Give them seats or give them drink rails to lean on. Instead...they gave them what looks like surplus theme park ride-queue railing. Nothing to sit on, nothing to so much as set a drink or a hot dog on for 3-4 hours. Don't really care who's idea it was, its a flop. Needs to be fixed asap.
This. Astutely observed.

I'm going to go a slightly different route. This team is more subdued than previous teams and I believe the fans are sorta mimicking them. The past couple of teams have been rowdy and played with a chip on their shoulder and the fans fed off of it. This team has been more workman like. Just look at their double celebrations. No energy in them like previous teams. I just get more of a ho hum, off to work i go feeling from these guys.

With that said, Doyle and Snead aren't included in that assessment. They are the only two i see with the 2021-2022 type attitudes.

One of the biggest advantages of LNS is also a disadvantage. The fans are right on top of the field so the players can hear everything. Thus, they hear and feed off the cheers and the roars. Unfortunately, they also hear the negative crap and personal attacks that they shouldn't be hearing from a home crowd. These aren’t professional athletes and 90% of baseball players at TN don’t receive any material NIL money. Most graduate with a lot of debt.

Mental health is a huge problem with athletes along with the huge expectations and pressure that comes along with it. Some courageous athletes have publically stated their challenges with mental health. See Evan Russell, Jared Dickey, and Zach Joyce to name a few VFLs who‘ve bravely encouraged others to get help and treatment.

Some receive death threats via social media after poor performances. What the dumb arse so called “fans“/criminals don’t bother to think about is these are actual young men with families who are trying to navigate college, school work, being away from home, money problems, etc. Instead of dragging them down, fans should build them up! Let’s hope the hornets nest returns and the BaseVols hear how much they are appreciated this weekend against Auburn! GBO!

I swear, and I’m open to various explanations. What ticket holder(that doesn’t make you a fan) goes to a game and acts that way and yells that stuff any where close to the dugout? If it’s opposing fans, all bets are off…but our fans do this?

Seems a wander through a gamethread would provide plenty of circumstantial evidence to confirm. Only takes one or two numbskulls.

Edit: Didn’t mention adult beverages. Gasoline on a fire…

Yes. Happened several times that I‘ve personally witnessed but it was addressed. It usually involves an entitled Jack arse who has had a few too many beers. CTV has alluded to several instances during his post game interviews. I was out of the country during A&M Series when it got really out of hand. Police intervened….Plus keyboard cowards sent death threats to a baseball player this very weekend. I doubt those clowns ever step foot in LNS. It’s certainly the vocal minority but point being the BaseVols deserve our support. You‘re either a Vol or you're not. Good times and in bad… Rant over

Not gonna drag this out but obviously something struck a nerve, we were on the road at LSU and it’s still coming up.
