LNS: Is the Hornet’s Nest Gone?

Wine and cheese crowd taking over is in my opinion a swipe at fans - how else should that inquiry be viewed? I speak my mind - always have and always will - product of my upbringing and my career.

Maybe the atmosphere has changed - I have no idea as I live in Atl. Could also inquire whether the atmosphere or attitude of the team has changed.., but dare a fan question whether any Vitello team has a different attitude??? Interesting Tony V has said many times that every team has its own identity - good, bad or indifferent.

I hope that we have yet to see this team’s grit and excellence and that as the season comes to a conclusion we will see the team gel and reach its potential.
That is more like it, P!!! That is a substantive contribution. I like it! 👍🏾

I would say that problems in the field are the reason for the drop off from last year to this year. To date, TENN is 3rd in hitting, 2nd in pitching and 13th in fielding % in the SEC.

The things that have changed are fairly obvious aren’t they? The personalities of the teams have changed.

The energy of baseball being a new thing and being good at it. There’s no surprise, just expectations.

Honestly, it doesn’t really seem much different vibes than other sports, but to say it’s the same as when we were bat flipping, bird flipping, completely juiced, and just about anyone could afford to go? Not admitting it’s changed? C’mon now.

GBO!!!

The atmosphere certainly seems more subdued on TV than it did a few years ago. Sold out atmosphere for money. I am not sure it was a good trade. See student section discussion, below.

Maybe, but I think it still sneaks up on opposing teams if we get rolling.

Absolutely.

Getting closer every year.

Unquestionably. We discussed this when discussing the stadium renovations. Treating students like 2d class fans is a terrible, terrible idea. Moving them to that crappy setup in RF is a disaster, especially for Tuesday games or for any game that starts to appear non-competitive. I wouldn't want to stand out there all game long on a Saturday afternoon. Never understood that design. Someone overthought that.

Additionally, the students were a big part of the energy in the stadium a few years back. Now they are moved far away. I know the University makes money off having donor seats near the dugout, but tickets will sell, even down the right field line, for winning ball teams. Crazy fans close to the field give an advantage to the home team. Move the students closer to the action. Make LNS a nightmare for opponents.

No. We should have high expectations, especially for a team as talented and potentially good as this one. We may be spoiled, but we should not lower our expectations for this team; they are still capable of greatness.

Would love your thoughts on these questions, as well. Call back in......
I was curious what people thought about the atmosphere at LNS. My take is it’s too soon to tell. I will let you know after the Auburn and Vandy series. I think the Sunday Supers game vs Evansville last year was incredible. LNS was rocking.

I think the student setup needs to be improved. I’d put in seats and more drink rails. We need more energy from the students. Someone needs to get the Fraternities engaged with TN baseball like CTV once did. Those were the Legends of Lindsey.

Understandably so. Easter Sunday is tough for a lot of folks. Wish the series was Thursday- Sat when it falls on Easter.
Believe Tennessee and Mississippi State were only two schools hosting a series on Easter Sunday. The other 6 series played DH on Saturday or played on Thursday...

When I posted on the game thread on Saturday from the TV broadcast it sounded like the crowd seemed dead all day. That comment was immediately criticized and others said in so many words that the team was playing so badly (in the field, pitching, batting) that there was nothing to cheer about.

That didn't ring well to me. I thought LNS crowd in prior recent years was non stop noise and clapping and trying to encourage the team if was having a bad day. Thats the way I recall it anyway. LNS I can be a a really tough place for visiting teams. But it has to be both elements contributing. I think the crowd can ignite the team . Up to the crowd to do their part in every game, all the way to the end no matter how big the hole is . IMO.

-Fanbase is spoiled. That doesn't help.

-There's a little wine and cheese, but there are still a large amount of tickets that are flipped each game. Doesn't help matters. Even people that are into it take a few innings to understand whats up and get involved in the game when its their first live game of the season. I spend the first couple innings of almost every game answering questions for whoever is next to me.

- New sound system is nicer, but gameday ops has taken a slight step back. New PA guy is still growing into the role. Mid inning video packages and "games" aren't super necessary especially when they're repetitive. They'd be fine cutting a few and just playing music and flashing some stats/scores.

-The biggest one: From the ones I've talked to...the students hate, and i mean HATE, the new setup. Right Field isn't a problem, its the layout. And honestly, I don't blame them. Give them seats or give them drink rails to lean on. Instead...they gave them what looks like surplus theme park ride-queue railing. Nothing to sit on, nothing to so much as set a drink or a hot dog on for 3-4 hours. Don't really care who's idea it was, its a flop. Needs to be fixed asap.

They either need to fix it and put in some drink rails, or yank the railing and let them station their own chairs before the game. Multiple other SEC Parks do that.

Instead, I worry Danny will be the first to roll out premium student seating....
Agree with all this. The new PA guy reports SEC scores in a way that screams he has no clue about baseball. “In an SEC game, Northwestern State beats LSU 3-13.” It makes me cringe, amongst some other things.

One thing I wish they would add to the seating, is damn cup holders! Why no damn cup holders to keep stuff from being spilt or kicked around. Also people learn some baseball etiquette, wait until a lull in the action to get up and leave your seat or come back to your seat. Rant over!

This is a major part of the problem and this is for tonight vs Lipscomb... Ridiculous

WRONG! I could not give tickets away for last night's game or Sunday's game. So the problem is that people just want to complain about not being able to get to watch the games. There are very reasonable tickets available to games for people who want to go to normal games. But everyone that complains just wants to go to the big series.

The biggest problem is not the wine and cheese mindset, imo. It is the fact that most do not have a clue about baseball in general. They just want to be a part of a winning team. A flyball hit anywhere anytime is treated like it is going out even when the outfielders just sit under it. Plus the announcers and music people have no clue.

💯 Agree on both points.

The student section is an insult to the students.

LNS is an early example of the evolving state of college sports. The core fan is being squeezed out with admission prices and talent fees. As college sports continues to evolve toward the pro model, the core fan will be replaced with wealthy donors and corporate ticket holders. Even at Neyland, luxury seats and smaller crowds take the space of blue collars fans.

Very, very true. People show up expecting a football or basketball experience and stare blankly when baseball is played like it normally is. There's a definite learning curve.

And the announcers and PA staff have been rough. Doesn't meet the standard of what that stadium can be, and I hope its addressed when things are finished.

💯 Agree on both points.

Any time I go to grab something or run to the bathroom, I go after the 3rd out. If I can't make it back in time, I just stand at the top of the stairs in SRO until the next half inning is over.

Its only a problem when we have a hot inning and I have to stay standing up there to keep Jobu happy 😂. I've watched some good baseball from up there lol.

Shoot, I’ve seen very reasonably priced tickets for some of the bigger series. Not a ton, but some if you keep a close watch.

This absolutely correct especially the announcers and music crew. Huge step back.

It also doesn’t help that this team doesn’t seem to have much enthusiasm even after big plays. The fans have taken on the personality of the team. The team and CTV are much more subdued which needed to happen a bit but I think they went too far.

We can criticize Kentucky for acting like a softball team in the dugout but it’s evident they are all locked in the game and excited to compete. Our team doesn’t appear to have any juice this year emotionally.

They are pretty subdued compared to the past, Mr. Peterman.

No I'm not wrong. You missed the point. I'm talking about UT, not posters giving away seats or selling here for good prices. This was a Tuesday game UT asking those prices that's ridiculous. Alot of fans don't use this board so they don't see the generosity of you and others here. All they see is what UT charges. That same single seat for SEC games UT wants 224$ plus whatever fee. That's absurd. You wanna grow this beautiful game, gets kids into the game and families, well this is 100'% not how you do it
