List of Coaches that Rejected Us

What’s the love affair with chadwell? East TN ties? Heupel has the better resume between the two.

Ummmmm........have you seen my posts?

I was replying to folks complaining that “some” coaches were not in the running.....or weren’t contacted.....or whatever.

Just saying (in my reply).......”if” Dykes turned them down (which I don’t think he did).......those other guys weren’t going to say yes.

With my Chadwell statement........just saying that was a guy that probably would have said yes. Yet by all accounts he wasn’t contacted either.

Was only saying “most of those guys weren’t coming”........Chadwell might have been one that “would.”.......”if” your leaving no stone unturned.....you probably check most the qualified names that “might” be interested.

I don’t give a crap......that he isn’t the HC at Tennessee.

I stated before his O might not work in the SEC and it would probably take time to install.

According to Chris Low, here's the list of coaches who rejected us.

James Franklin, Penn State
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati
Sonny Dykes, SMU
PJ Fleck, Minnesota
Tony Elliot, Clemson (OC)

Sorry to say it folks, but as it turns out, a lot of coaches don't want to walk into a situation with NCAA penalties are looming overhead. Other than Franklin, I don't think any of those coaches turn us down in a normal search. Getting a coach of Josh Heupel's quality in this situation is actually pretty good. Compare Ole Miss in 2017 who had to hire Matt Luke.

Overall, I think White did an excellent job in a bad situation. He swung for the fences, struck out a few times, but still hired a quality coach. In the previous coaching searches, we never even tried to land top-tier coaches. We passed on Gary Patterson and Mike Leach in 2008 (both of whom were interested). We never seriously went after Mullen in 2017 and our AD got fired when he went rogue and went after Mike Leach.

Heupel may succeed or he may not, but regardless, I think we'll be in better shape 3-4 years from now. Either Heupel improves us or we're in a better spot to hire a top-tier coach.

Given what has happened over the past month, I think this is actually one of the better case scenarios. At the very least, we got an elite AD. If we're lucky, we got a good HC, as well.

P.S. Glad Sonny Dykes rejected us. I think Heupel is better than Dykes.

The only reason Franklin would come here is money. No reason he'd leave a better job. The rest are just holding out for better jobs

Did they offer Matt Cambell, Did they offer Jeff Fisher. Did the AD fly to their house and say hey we want you what's it going to take. I doubt it, well that's what it takes to get a really good coach. Searching firms are money wasters. You want somebody , you show them you want them .

Agree with all of this 💯... AND we aren’t paying out the wazoo for a coach who has never been an HC coach everywhere... I am excited to see what staff he assembles and how they can recruit. Maybe Steele will stick around (especially since Ansley is gone) or maybe Huepel will ask Odom to join. That would be huge and Huepel would probably benefit from Odom’s previous HC experience. Would Tennessee fork out crazy money for a DC the way the did Chaney?

If really considered, thank goodness Franklin is staying at Penn State...if he has another year like the start of 2020 (0-6) even Penn State will fire him. He had a mouth problem while at Vanderbilt and the football rape case where some felt he attempted a cover up.

Low writing a cover for his previous incorrect projections? If Low didn’t write this, would all his prior head coach search insights/projections make him look more disconnected (aka false prophet)? 😉

UPDATE:
I just read the linked article. Nowhere. Nowhere. Nowhere does Low give such a list of “coaches who rejected us.” The closest thing to such in the article is “Sources told ESPN that, over the past few days, Elliot had serious discussions about the job but turned down Tennessee’s overtures and elected to stay at Clemson.”
1. No source said on record. In other words, we can make up this statement to cover our proven wrong projection on the coach list.
2. The said ”turn down” was to Tennessee’s “overtures.” There was no offer to Elliot according to the article.

Sometimes, things work out for the best unexpectedly. I like this South Dakota man and this maybe the perfect fit. One things for sure, for the first time I can remember, UT Admin and UT Athletics are on the same page. Let's put up some points and see what happens. It can't be worse than watching a Cornbread coached team, that's an absolute.

IDC, we have a new HC, let's get behind him, if I don't see progress by the 2022 season, fire him.

Who gives a RatsRectum about which coaches rejected us. We have our coach. So either support him and the team or go root for that RichardHead James Franklin. Geezle.

I'd probably take Franklin or Fickell. Prior to hearing White and Heupel yesterday, anyway. The ironic thing about Franklin, is that he just had a worse season than Pruitt, against a much softer schedule, and much further into his program. There's really no such thing as a guarantee, but I'm excited about the offensive potential under Heupel.

The other three, Dykes, Fleck, and Elliot - would be far below Heupel for me.

Freeze was never an option given his past.
Kiffin likely had just a tad bit too much baggage to reach out.

I think we did really well, considering the circumstances. And the players seem very pleased, which is far more important than my opinion.

PJ Fleck has turned down other programs including Texas and Auburn so he seems pretty stubborn about moving. Franklin wasn't happening, Penn State is his dream job. I have heard Luke Fickell has also been turning down big names. Surprised about Tony Elliot and Sonny Dykes. I think their is a disconnect between fans/Clay Travis and the administration. Most of the names thrown around by fans were NOT interviewed. However, I do think the fans want unrealistic picks like Hugh Freeze who would give us NCAA problems.

Danny White stated that in his presser that none of the one's mentioned above were ever offered the job, so I think it would be difficult to turn down something you were never offered. He said that there was one offer made and that was accepted by Heupel

Our offense has been stagnant, and we'll be greatly improved by an offense minded HC. He's avg over 500 yds a game the last 5 seasons. How many times have we gained 500 yds in a game over those years is a good question.
He aint gonna be callin plays against that schedule

Sure. I'm sure the plane was in state college PA and those other places as a diversion. A search firm shields you from having to get into an actual offer and contract. Franklin was absolutely offered. The others were courted but likely never offered, and I'd say most if not all those are the ones that stopped the inquiry process.

As usual time will tell. We ended up with a guy that is on the leading edge of the offensive world but with a lot less risk than some of the head cases that were out there. I was never a Mumme or Pirate fan because they seemed over committed to proving their theories and did not properly value balance. JH seems to be innovative, and will not be trying to out Bama Bama, which is good because you can tailor your squad to have other tendencies.

Do his methods with or without some variants translate to this level? Once again, time will tell. These next few days will be important in determining his success, maybe the speed of attaining goals, maybe whether he does or not. Staffing to support a mix of execution and recruiting is key, and impactive on his efforts to maximize his recruiting, especially in state. I don't like the locking up the state soundbites we often hear, but we do need to get a higher percentage of those we really target. Getting them all is not really in play anymore. Getting the right guys on BOTH sides of the ball is going to require having staff to entice and utilize our targets. If he can lead us to a better balance we have a shot at gaining on the big boys. Just trying to run up the scorecard will not win championships.

I hope he has some players staked out that we can add to 20 guys on our current list of adds. Some early momentum here could be big. His use of inbound transfer portal will be fun to watch.

You're probably mixing up "offered" with "spoke with". DW offered Fickell/Elliot/ect? No. AD's don't like to make an offer unless they've already reached an agreement.

DW had a coach search agency speak with Fickell's/ect agent to determine interest and negotiate salary if interested? Yes. Of those names those guys said not interested or never reached a salary agreement.

People are falling for the AD speak like crazy. You can tell how many of these Tennessee fans really dont know anything.

Only one coach will ever be "offered". This is because the offer is the very last step in the process. The only thing that matters is who Tennessee WANTED to offer the job to. For a fact Heuple was not the #1 target in this coaching search. White would have 100% hired James Franklin over Josh Heupel if James Franklin wanted to come here. Anyone believing otherwise is practicing willful ignorance. I just listened to the Locked on Vols podcast and Josh Ward basically called White a flat out saying what he said was untrue, but he understood that White said what he had to say to be politically correct.
