List of Coaches that Rejected Us

Danny White stated that in his presser that none of the one's mentioned above were ever offered the job, so I think it would be difficult to turn down something you were never offered. He said that there was one offer made and that was accepted by Heupel
Danny White says you’re a fool

It looks like a ho-hum hire now, but when sanctions come out, it may be considered a grand slam
You’ll think grand slam, when the Heup man is hanging fitty on Dan, next year!! Gator scum!!

Sorry, I haven’t been able to talk trash to conference brethren in a long, long, time and I couldn’t resist.
Man, that did feel good though.
GBO!!

People are falling for the AD speak like crazy. You can tell how many of these Tennessee fans really dont know anything.

Only one coach will ever be "offered". This is because the offer is the very last step in the process. The only thing that matters is who Tennessee WANTED to offer the job to. For a fact Heuple was not the #1 target in this coaching search. White would have 100% hired James Franklin over Josh Heupel if James Franklin wanted to come here. Anyone believing otherwise is practicing willful ignorance. I just listened to the Locked on Vols podcast and Josh Ward basically called White a flat out saying what he said was untrue, but he understood that White said what he had to say to be politically correct.
You mean, there are people who think Heupel was really the #1 target?
🤔
GBO!!

As usual time will tell. We ended up with a guy that is on the leading edge of the offensive world but with a lot less risk than some of the head cases that were out there. I was never a Mumme or Pirate fan because they seemed over committed to proving their theories and did not properly value balance. JH seems to be innovative, and will not be trying to out Bama Bama, which is good because you can tailor your squad to have other tendencies.

Do his methods with or without some variants translate to this level? Once again, time will tell. These next few days will be important in determining his success, maybe the speed of attaining goals, maybe whether he does or not. Staffing to support a mix of execution and recruiting is key, and impactive on his efforts to maximize his recruiting, especially in state. I don't like the locking up the state soundbites we often hear, but we do need to get a higher percentage of those we really target. Getting them all is not really in play anymore. Getting the right guys on BOTH sides of the ball is going to require having staff to entice and utilize our targets. If he can lead us to a better balance we have a shot at gaining on the big boys. Just trying to run up the scorecard will not win championships.

I hope he has some players staked out that we can add to 20 guys on our current list of adds. Some early momentum here could be big. His use of inbound transfer portal will be fun to watch.

Agreed, right there with you. GBO!

All the chatter is just that. Not one iota of PROOF given by anyone that what White said was not truth. Furthermore, the linked article doesn’t even say it. The chatter appears to be more disenchantment than reality.

As am I. Give some proof, or even someone with first hand info willing to go on record, and I will stop laughing.
You think this lowly of our AD?

Lmao if you’re that big of fool... Send me your bank account and SS numbers and I’ll send you the proof.

What do you think I think? If you think that I think that a “list” of coaches were made an offer and turned it down, I do not. The AD said as such. Unless someone can demonstrate otherwise, I take the AD at his word. He said they interviewed and vetted a list but did not offer anyone other than JH. He went on to say that media reports otherwise were not accurate.

The OP suggested that a linked article by Chris Low said that a list of names coaches turned us down. Read the article. It did not say that. It didn’t even quote a named source that Elliot turned down anything other than an “overture.” Thus, I believe the AD until someone can demonstrate otherwise.

According to Chris Low, here's the list of coaches who rejected us.

James Franklin, Penn State
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati
Sonny Dykes, SMU
PJ Fleck, Minnesota
Tony Elliot, Clemson (OC)

Sorry to say it folks, but as it turns out, a lot of coaches don't want to walk into a situation with NCAA penalties are looming overhead. Other than Franklin, I don't think any of those coaches turn us down in a normal search. Getting a coach of Josh Heupel's quality in this situation is actually pretty good. Compare Ole Miss in 2017 who had to hire Matt Luke.

Overall, I think White did an excellent job in a bad situation. He swung for the fences, struck out a few times, but still hired a quality coach. In the previous coaching searches, we never even tried to land top-tier coaches. We passed on Gary Patterson and Mike Leach in 2008 (both of whom were interested). We never seriously went after Mullen in 2017 and our AD got fired when he went rogue and went after Mike Leach.

Heupel may succeed or he may not, but regardless, I think we'll be in better shape 3-4 years from now. Either Heupel improves us or we're in a better spot to hire a top-tier coach.

Given what has happened over the past month, I think this is actually one of the better case scenarios. At the very least, we got an elite AD. If we're lucky, we got a good HC, as well.

P.S. Glad Sonny Dykes rejected us. I think Heupel is better than Dykes.

If you read the story, Low reported that the only coach who allegedly turned us down was Elliot. The others were reported as having been interviewed. I've interviewed lots of people that I decided not to hire. far more than I actually have hired.
