List of Coaches that Rejected Us

Sonny Dykes was not offered the position and he didn’t turn us down. I don’t give a damn what Chris Low’s sources say.

Who else was he going to get?

NO ONE!
I would have went after whoever I wanted to be my coach. Money 💰 talks. But I'm not AD so it doesn't matter who I wanted. Hopefully this works out, tired of watching bad play calling coaches. Just want somebody that actually is not in over their head. Tennessee is not a easy place to coach , it's pretty much a pressure cooker. But you have to show progress and not get beat by your rivals by 20-30 pts every game. All I'm saying . Wish Heupel best of luck. GO VOLS!!!
Note: It's the Administration's fault we are where we are.

I agree, but he will be better than Pruitt.
I do believe whole heartedly he will be better than Mr. 🥔 Head. Just we should have never gotten to this point. I believe Lane Kiffin bailing on us is what started this downward spiral. Administration didn't got get another good coach, it's like they gave up on football altogether.

I watched the presser today, so someone else that did please refresh my memory. Did White say no other coach was offered the job???

Jamey Chadwell would be a nice hire but I think this worked out well for you all at least in regards to him. Im not sure on Heupel but no sense he doesn’t deserve a chance. With Chadwell, he’s a local boy from Caryville so I’m sure he would’ve jumped at the opportunity. The unknown is still there though. He had a great season but was it a flash in the pan? He could be the next Urban Meyer in the sense of going from a small school to greatness or he could be like when we hired Joker Phillips because he was the sexy hire and local boy.

Let Chadwell have another year or two at CCU then get hired by a power 5 to cut his teeth. Maybe Va Tech takes a chance to replace Fuente, maybe UNC gets him when Mack hangs it up. Those would be ideal programs for him but not big enough that y’all couldn’t go get him when the time comes.

Also believe they should have let Currie do his job. Instead of allowing Fulmer once again to stab somebody in the back to get what he wanted.
So glad he failed as AD, karma is a Beach.

According to Chris Low, here's the list of coaches who rejected us.

James Franklin, Penn State
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati
Sonny Dykes, SMU
PJ Fleck, Minnesota
Tony Elliot, Clemson (OC)

Sorry to say it folks, but as it turns out, a lot of coaches don't want to walk into a situation with NCAA penalties are looming overhead. Other than Franklin, I don't think any of those coaches turn us down in a normal search. Getting a coach of Josh Heupel's quality in this situation is actually pretty good. Compare Ole Miss in 2017 who had to hire Matt Luke.

Overall, I think White did an excellent job in a bad situation. He swung for the fences, struck out a few times, but still hired a quality coach. In the previous coaching searches, we never even tried to land top-tier coaches. We passed on Gary Patterson and Mike Leach in 2008 (both of whom were interested). We never seriously went after Mullen in 2017 and our AD got fired when he went rogue and went after Mike Leach.

Heupel may succeed or he may not, but regardless, I think we'll be in better shape 3-4 years from now. Either Heupel improves us or we're in a better spot to hire a top-tier coach.

Given what has happened over the past month, I think this is actually one of the better case scenarios. At the very least, we got an elite AD. If we're lucky, we got a good HC, as well.

P.S. Glad Sonny Dykes rejected us. I think Heupel is better than Dykes.

I still hate Franklin for that ******** challenge he called in 2013 that ended up giving Vandy a 1st down and ultimately won them the game... I was there to see it happen live and that play was obviously short of the line. He knew he was about to lose so he threw the challenge flag out of pure desperation... and those garbage refs sided with him and gave him the first down. I still get mad when I think about it. Unbelievable.

"LIST OF COACHES WHO REJECTED US"

You know what? It doesn't matter, not at all. MOVE THE FRIK ON. For crying out loud we know we're toxic. We know it's a tall mountain. The search is over, we have a coach and he's not Beldar. Think about it. We've improved immensely by firing Beldar and hiring the HYPE-ELL. GBO

So he didn’t talk to Kiffin,Malzun, or freeze?

Did they offer Matt Cambell, Did they offer Jeff Fisher. Did the AD fly to their house and say hey we want you what's it going to take. I doubt it, well that's what it takes to get a really good coach. Searching firms are money wasters. You want somebody , you show them you want them .

Why in the world would White fly to Jeff Fisher's house?

I wished he would’ve tried Kiffin or Freeze. Don’t know that he didn’t. But as far as Malzahn. If I was him I would sit on that dollar that he got from Aubarn for a year or two. I would assume Kiffin and Freeze with baggage had a lot to do with it.

I'm convinced that someone called in a favor with Fisher and got him to publicly "express interest" in the job to make it more attractive. I don't think he was ever a real option.

nah. they tried to cheap out on James Franklin. He was listening and was attainable. Our stud AD negotiated and whiffed

I am dying to know your connections to all of this. I seriously am intrigued by all the behind the scenes negotiations, I love that stuff. Please start a thread on this since you are soooooo well connected.

They didn't try on Chadwell or Napier? I get Kiffin and Freeze. Can't bring them with the NCAA stuff. But those first two didn't get a check? Absolutely nuts.

Finebaum said today that he knows a couple of other coaches were vetted but their background would not have made them an acceptable hire at this time. He said he couldn't say who they were but it would be interesting to know their names.
