List of Coaches that Rejected Us

So you know how it's done? What's your experience at hiring positions with enormous responsibility and compensation?
When you have that much money backing you supposedly, you should be able to get the guy you want. Money talks. You get what you pay for . Once in awhile you find a gem for cheap, so hopefully we did. Just like any other business transaction you get what you pay for.

I think Franklin is on a downhill trajectory - not hating he didn't buy in. His loss.

Let's see what the Heupel staff looks like. We have a few quality guys from the last staff that you can build around - plus Steel.

You don't want to force Coordinators or assistants on coaches.

He better have a defense to back it up. Or were going to be like Michigan when they had Rich Rodriguez, score **** load of points but couldn't stop anybody and lost alot of games because of it. You have to have both to win consistently.

My problem is I do not see
Gus Malzahn
Lane Kiffin
Hugh Freeze
If I am making the phone calls I start with those 3 and let them turn me down. All 3 are winners in the SEC, some have baggage (Kiffin, Freeze) but all are capable of being good quality coach for us.

Well, why is it these names are still all on the board? Did any of them turn down AU? SC? Van? Please stop this insanity.

we've been in that same situation before with Dooley and Sumnseri

I don’t know why Franklin was even considered for the job...and then the thought that he was #1 is even crazier.

Penn State always has been his dream job. We likely wasted some important time with that sleaze bag.

Gus at 25M in his pocket, he can choose his next job or sit back and count money to not coach
Lane, although I'm a big fan he has not changed since he left in 2010 if he comes back. He plays to the emotions of the fans here.
Hugh, don't disagree but with NCAA looming optics are everything.

this hire and was a reality check on where we are and how we are viewed.

The admin at UT had a softball going 10 mph and a fence only 50 feet away. All they had to do was swing and it would’ve been a home run and they botched it. All they had to say was we contacted Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Bill Belichik, God, and Peyton Manning. They said no so we chose Heupel.

Did they offer Matt Cambell, Did they offer Jeff Fisher. Did the AD fly to their house and say hey we want you what's it going to take. I doubt it, well that's what it takes to get a really good coach. Searching firms are money wasters. You want somebody , you show them you want them .

Any of those above for the right money would come. None of them would for anything less than 7 million. Offer 8 million a year and see. However I just as soon have the one we got over anyone mentioned other than freeze or kiffin. Freeze got an extension. In dec to 3 mil. A year, was 2 mil. Campbell also extension. We always act too slow in making a move, Pruitt should have been fired after the KY game. Then offer that kind of money to any u mentioned and I believe they would want to be hc here.

Doesn't bother me a bit. Franklin would have never realistically considered this job. I wouldn't have been happy with the rest of the list.

They way I see it. Heupel will be here a long time. He'll be successful and get us back to being a perennial power. He'll have turnover as coaches make their own way as good staffs do, and I know there is no way that we lose to the likes of Wyoming (Fulmer) and GaSt (Pruitt). We won't pull a '17 KY loss (Butch) or a '17 UGa (41-0) (Butch). We'll be competitive, score, and play good defense. If we stick to the process, Heupel ca turn this thing around.

According to Chris Low, here's the list of coaches who rejected us.

James Franklin, Penn State
Luke Fickell, Cincinnati
Sonny Dykes, SMU
PJ Fleck, Minnesota
Tony Elliot, Clemson (OC)

Sorry to say it folks, but as it turns out, a lot of coaches don't want to walk into a situation with NCAA penalties are looming overhead. Other than Franklin, I don't think any of those coaches turn us down in a normal search. Getting a coach of Josh Heupel's quality in this situation is actually pretty good. Compare Ole Miss in 2017 who had to hire Matt Luke.

Overall, I think White did an excellent job in a bad situation. He swung for the fences, struck out a few times, but still hired a quality coach. In the previous coaching searches, we never even tried to land top-tier coaches. We passed on Gary Patterson and Mike Leach in 2008 (both of whom were interested). We never seriously went after Mullen in 2017 and our AD got fired when he went rogue and went after Mike Leach.

Heupel may succeed or he may not, but regardless, I think we'll be in better shape 3-4 years from now. Either Heupel improves us or we're in a better spot to hire a top-tier coach.

Given what has happened over the past month, I think this is actually one of the better case scenarios. At the very least, we got an elite AD. If we're lucky, we got a good HC, as well.

P.S. Glad Sonny Dykes rejected us. I think Heupel is better than Dykes.

I highly, highly doubt this is true.

Zero coaches. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Batman was the only coach we were interested in. It would have happened sooner, but we required a search firm to identify the coach that sat a few doors down from our new AD. Can't be too careful you know.

What’s the deal
With Jeff Fisher. Mr. 8-8. And he has “never” recruited. He needs to stay retired.

As of now there are no reports/stories that I can find, even by Low, that says anyone turned the Tennessee job down. Is this more Fake News?? ESPN saying a source isn't credible.

Thankful that Coach Heupel has taken a career chance with us. We must support him in order to dig out of the hole we are in!

It was Heupel all along. Nice coaching search one phone call. I can only hope this guy knows what the heck he is doing. This isn't UCF, playing a bunch of nobodies every week.
