List of Coaches that Rejected Us

There shouldn't be a 'free pass' for this. This is inexcusable.

All the “wish list” names were asking for too much based on what they would be walking into. Can’t blame them and if we have to fire Heupel after 4-5 years it won’t cost as much as firing a guy like Herman or Franklin

Did Franklin really count as a rejection considering he would have taken it if we ponied up the money. Boosters screwed that one up. Also didn't know we formally offered Dykes the job just that we interviewed him.
Oh, I think we had the money ready to go. I think Franklin flat-out said no to our best offer, after considering it seriously. The unknown sanctions were probably the killer.

But Chris Low didn't actually say most of the folks on that list turned down an offer. He's a journalist, and an experienced one, so is careful in the words he chooses. And this is precisely what he wrote:

"White...reached out to and/or interviewed several candidates, including Penn State's James Franklin, Cincinnati's Luke Fickell, SMU's Sonny Dykes, Minnesota's PJ Fleck and Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, among others."

Reaching out is different from interviewing, which is different from offering. Low never said "offer" in reference to that list. Probably at Danny White's request.

The only one Low overtly says turned down an offer?

Sources told ESPN that, over the past few days, Elliott had serious discussions about the job but turned down Tennessee's overtures and elected to stay at Clemson.

Notice Low in that particular spot mentions "sources." That means it didn't come from Danny White. Because I doubt White admitted to Low (or will admit to anyone else) that anyone turned down the University of Tennessee. Danny only wants it to be known that we went after bigger fish.

I know, I know, how can you "go after" bigger fish but not admit they "turned you down"? The two have to go together, right? Maybe so, but the AD talking to the journalist doesn't actually have to say the latter to say the former.

It's all walking a tightrope between doing what's good for the university and giving the fans and public enough info to understand what happened.

Seems to me AD White did a pretty good job of it.

Our offense has been stagnant, and we'll be greatly improved by an offense minded HC. He's avg over 500 yds a game the last 5 seasons. How many times have we gained 500 yds in a game over those years is a good question.

Yep, we won’t have to worry about holding opposing teams under 10 points to have a shot at winning this year.

We’ve gone over 500 what, once in the last 3 years?

We as a fan base need to come to grips with the fact that at this point in time Tennessee is not the "DREAM JOB" we all wished it were. Top coaches don't want to come here with all the sanctions awaiting and the turmoil that got here as far as Admin and booster meddling of the past.. I hope this hire is a step in the right direction and only time will tell but I will as always to be a Vol fan and that is something I think all of us will continue to be.

I don't believe a word of it. The media was given bum info to explain away the hire.

It was always Heupel from minute one.

AD White said at presser Heupel was the only coach he offered the job to.

So where did the idea come from all other coaches turned UT down?
I'm not ever going to go back and watch that press conference ... you've got to be kidding me. That's exactly what I just said. Rockstar AD😂😂🤡

Yes I am that stupid so you please tell me exactly which coaches White spoke to and what those coaches said Mr Knowitall.

I was going to answer this, but quite frankly there are too many of you clowns on here, so I will leave you with this. Is it strange to you that 99% of all new coach announcements, no matter the school or professional team, always get their first offer accepted? Do you actually believe that when they say it? Or perhaps is there something else going on.

So in others words you don't know.

EDIT: what AD White just said after Heupel spoke sure sounds like he had other options than Heupel.

I don’t hate him, I wish him success. I’m just wondering if we would have had better luck with hiring 11 months from now.

As you just did with your summary!

That's an excellent question. UT had 1 game in each of the last 3 seasons over 500 yards. Dobbs led the Vols to five 500+ games in his last season.

During the same period, UT posted less than 350 yds of offense an ridiculous 27 times. Heupel led O's produced less than 350 five times during the same period- only once at UCF.
