Oh, I think we had the money ready to go. I think Franklin flat-out said no to our best offer, after considering it seriously. The unknown sanctions were probably the killer.
But Chris Low didn't actually say most of the folks on that list turned down an offer. He's a journalist, and an experienced one, so is careful in the words he chooses. And this is precisely what he wrote:
"White...reached out to and/or interviewed several candidates, including Penn State's James Franklin, Cincinnati's Luke Fickell, SMU's Sonny Dykes, Minnesota's PJ Fleck and Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, among others."
Reaching out is different from interviewing, which is different from offering. Low never said "offer" in reference to that list. Probably at Danny White's request.
The only one Low overtly says turned down an offer?
Sources told ESPN that, over the past few days, Elliott had serious discussions about the job but turned down Tennessee's overtures and elected to stay at Clemson.
Notice Low in that particular spot mentions "sources." That means it didn't come from Danny White. Because I doubt White admitted to Low (or will admit to anyone else) that anyone turned down the University of Tennessee. Danny only wants it to be known that we went after bigger fish.
I know, I know, how can you "go after" bigger fish but not admit they "turned you down"? The two have to go together, right? Maybe so, but the AD talking to the journalist doesn't actually have to say the latter to say the former.
It's all walking a tightrope between doing what's good for the university and giving the fans and public enough info to understand what happened.
Seems to me AD White did a pretty good job of it.
