I used to be all about the playoffs, but I have been questioning them as of late. If you had a playoff system, how many teams would get in? When would they start? Would you have to cut the regular season short by 1 game, maybe 2? If you had an 8-team playoff or a "Final Four," fans and teams would still ***** that they got left out...it is inevitable.
That is why I have been leaning towards keeping the BCS. You just have to look at the regular season as the playoffs. However, I am not 100% sold on their "math" or "formula" for determining matchups. There seems to be too much money changing hands and the NCAA is making a killing. There is definately some work that needs to be done to the current system, but I am not sure that a playoff is the answer.
Playoffs would be very bad for the SEC. Teams could get to the playoffs by playing maybe one or two quality teams and ten cupcakes. IMO if playoffs happen:
- No tough OOC games.
- Drop the SECCG.
- Cut the regular season schedule back to 10 or 11 games.
- Some conference stalwarts go independent. Drop the disadvantage of having to play tough SEC conference foes every week. ND shows how this works.
- When a spot in the playoffs is reasonably assured, rest the starters.
I don't understand how some SEC fans can be in favor of playoffs. On any given week a BSU (or Utah! :nocan beat any team in the country. But play tough teams every week and the BSUs of the world either get filtered out, or prove beyond doubt they belong amongst the elite. Playoffs work to the advantage of one-shot wonders.
