...that we are the Nebraska of the SEC. We had a really good run in the 80's and 90's but now, Tennessee is not a top tier program. We're not even the best team in our state.
TBH, I don't know how good of a job Tennessee is anymore. Fortunately, there is a deep enough coaching pool for John Currie to really have to screw up in order to make a bad hire. However, if we have to compete against Florida for a particular candidate, we will lose that battle. Every. Time.
I'm not saying we can't ever be good again, but I feel too many TN fans have a false sense of just how good of a job TN actually is.
Op isn't completely wrong. Tennessee is traditionally 7-9 win team. however, there is a difference in trying to change that and just accepting it. It does not appear that Curry is accepting it.

Absolutely ridiculous post.
There's no false sense. Head coach at UT is one of the 10 best jobs in the country.
Mike the Hamilton was in charge of that, so really, what do you know about that search and who said no.Then, how did we end up with Dooley and Butch? Why did all those other coaches say, "No" when we were conducting yet, another coaching search? If this is such a great job, why are we playing coach carousel again? How many athletic directors have we had in the last five years?
You think a top-tier coach isn't going to school himself in all those questions, and join up when all the evidence is against yours, and far too many Vols fan's, delusions?
Prepare for disappointment. The fans forced our current ADs hand. We're going to get the coach we deserve.

Hey JP,
I don't start threads, so I'll throw this out to you --
Why don't you consider creating a new Coach Search Character Values vs General Neyland thread (you know, comparing how the coaches currently being evaluated by John Currie would fair against General Neyland, value/character/and coaching-approach-wise; and/or, what kind of values would General Neyland be looking for, IF he were part of the Interview process along with Currie / i.e. IF Gen Neyland were in the office/on the road with Currie during all visits). Just a thought.
We all have our short list. This is mine in order:
1. Patterson-TCU
2. Mullen-MSU
3. Frost-CF
What is yours?
No reason Tennessee can't be a great program again. We need to realize you need top notch coaching to win in the SEC. You are not going to get it done with MAC or Louisiana Tech guys and maybe finally that has been realized.

Why? Mike Hamilton and Dave Hart. Neither will ever be remembered as good AD's.
When Strong turned us down, it was after he saw UT's APR. Other coaches may have declined for the same reason.
As much as I despise Butch, he improved everything but game day performance. APR is now in good shape, very few players getting in trouble, and there's a lot of talent on the roster.
Think UT can't return to the glory days of being in the national discussion? Consider this;
*Just a year ago, UT was top 10 in the polls.
*In 2015, Bama had to come back in the 4th to beat us.
*The year before, we had Oklahoma beat until Butch peed his pants on the sideline.
*We have a rookie running back that may end up NFL Rookie of the Year.
*2 of Butch's former QBs on current NFL rosters, and Riley Ferguson will make it 3 next year.
These things happened under that game-day incompetent clown Butch Jones.
With all that talent, where could UT be right now with just a current 4th choice (or lower) candidate like Brohm or Norvell had been on the sidelines the last 3 seasons?
One solid coaching hire...we are that close to being more than relevant again. Nothing delusional about that.
Butch is gone, the days of the woe is me, doom and gloom attitude should be out the door with him....that we are the Nebraska of the SEC. We had a really good run in the 80's and 90's but now, Tennessee is not a top tier program. We're not even the best team in our state.
