I would agree that there's a ceiling or barrier that Butch hasn't broken through but I do believe he's made changes in an attempt to get better. The one constant has been the offensive scheme. But I believe the offensive has been pretty damn effective. Defense and Strength/Conditioning scream for the most attention. He made an attempt to rectify those things. You can hate the guy but he has made efforts to put this team in a better position to compete.
I don't hate the guy, I just don't think he is a very good football coach. He has done a good job recruiting and been a good representative for the school despite some awful pr blunders. His record with off the field stuff is exemplary. So no, I don't hate him.
However, on to the reason he makes four million a year, he just isn't that good. Maybe those coaching changes will save him. That's not much different than any other coach but the issue is that it never seems to mesh well under CBJ. The Offense has been good and really picked up when Debord got here. However, there are several ongoing problems with the OLine. Without going into too much detail, I think some are scheme related and some are manpower management related. It may also be the inability to develop talent (which I think is the overall issue on the team). The WR have underwhelmed as a whole, not hiring a SC coach immediately, not having a full time QB coach, etc all problems with Offense that has been pretty good.
On Defense we get one of the top names for a coordinator and have the worst defense in Tennessee history. Injuries also played a role. In addressing that, Jones admitted he eased up during practice to avoid injuries.
These types of points can have endless discussions either way, but the overall theme to me is that CBJ cannot seem to manage a season to lead the Vols to be considered a top echelon SEC team. His record against rank teams is awful, 0 wins against the West and an overall losing SEC record. I good coach figures out how to win a game a two he shouldn't most years. CBJ trends the other directions. Yeah I know people will point to the Florida win. IMO it was a great comeback that never should have been. We should have won at least 2 of the last 3, which would take a bit of the excitement out of this years win. I could list the same for a couple other games but you get the point.
As I have said before, if Tennessee fields a fundamentally sound team that gets the most out of the talent and drops a game they shouldn't but is at the 9-10 win mark and wins the east every few years, then I don't give a crap if the coach is Princess Belle or Kermit the Frog. Just don't be Paterno or Briles and I'm good.
