I'm saying every SEC HC currently not named Smart must be "not a championship coach" using your criteriaI don't know what that means. No coach in the last 25 years, unless I missed one, has won a SEC Title that didnt win one in their first 5 years in the conference. Maybe Heup wins one this year. If not, it is highly unlikely he ever wins one.
“The 5th Stage of Grief” might be a good title for your upcoming autobiography.I'm fine with it. Historically that's what our program is...well...closer to 8 wins rather than 10, but we are who and what we are.
Frankly I've never expected a natty in any sport at UT. Not realistic IMO, and I say this after 7 decades of experience with this program. After that much time, I've simply learned to live in the 5th stage of grief.
Groundhog day year after bloody year. Go Vols? Yeah, why not.
When it comes to recruiting, it is still affected by the same dynamics. When he arrived, the program had just hit with a nuclear dumpster fire. Add to that ridiculous recruiting restrictions. Add to that is his "gimmicky" difficult to learn and run offense. He has just now gotten to the point that you can realistically rate how good he is at recruiting. Being asked to hit a bullseye at 2 miles with a blindfold and both hands encased in concrete does put one at a disadvantage.I wish everyone would stop saying he is the 'best coach since Fulmer.' That is such a low bar it has no meaning. What I believe has held Heupel back is that his recruiting, by SEC standards, has been average for the most part. He had a lot to overcome in this regard but the 2025 class was really good and the 2026 class is looking even better. Classes like these build on each other. It is taking a while but Heupel is building a program that will compete for championships year in and year out. To be completely honest though, talent and depth at the safety and LB positions cannot come soon enough cause we ain't got it now.
My impression is that it is only a small minority on these boards who do not appreciate Josh Heupel. You'd be surprised. There are MANY on here that just don't like Josh Heupel for some reason. Some don't like him because his offense is "gimmicky", some don't like him because he isn't a mouthy coach like Kiffin and is a little awkward in front of the camera, some don't like him because they expect coaches to come into an absolute dumpster fire of a program and immediately recruit top 3 classes, and most are just ungrateful/ drank themselves into forgetting the last 15 years.
Well considering we're the #1 scoring offense in the country, I'd say the team is doing a good job.Who cares how they score, as long as they score regularly !!!!
Long time lurker, but I finally joined just so I could hit "ignore." I appreciate honest and thoughtful criticism, but literally hating the guy for EVERYTHING gets old.My impression is that it is only a small minority on these boards who do not appreciate Josh Heupel.
Some of them are very vocal, with post after post after post complaining, so they can seem like more than they are, if you don't pay attention to who says what.
But it's not many of us.
As OffTackle said, the vast majority of us appreciate the coach and his team.
Go Vols!
But that ranking is due in no small part to the quality of competition. Now we enter the real meat of the season. Let's see if this offense is legit or a product of the schedule.Well considering we're the #1 scoring offense in the country, I'd say the team is doing a good job.

A Georgia defense with 10 5 stars (on defense) coached by one of the greatest defensive minds of all time isn't quality competition? But that ranking is due in no small part to the quality of competition.
