Les Miles thread (merged)

Miles won 77% of his games at LSU, which is better than Spurrier, Richt, and Urban Meyer at their SEC schools. Yeah, can’t coach. Pass

Fired by an Admin that lacked foreseeable intelligence. Like UGA. Like UT.

There is absolutely no plausible reason to have fired Miles. Arguably the dumbest move since Fulmer. You can argue Miles didn't beat Bama. But, I promise you, he is the ONLY collegiate coach in ALL of college football that beat Saban 3 of 9. There is no coach on our bucket list that will ever be able to do that, or has already proven he can. Beating Saban every 1/3 on average is like winning a NC every other year.

Ahh, gotcha...

So it’s LSU’s Administration fault that Miles refused to change his offensive philosophy and develop a QB worth a damn?

The way he handles game & clock management reminds me so much of Butch, it’s not even funny.

I mean hell, we’ve already went through one stubborn coach. Why not go through another one?

I’m not saying we should hire him, his age does give me pause. But to say he can’t coach is absurd. He won a natty in the Saban era playing in the same division. And, who do you think recruited all that NFL talent that so many think he underachieved with?

No, it was time for him to go, probably a year too late to be honest after seeing the state of recruiting on the OL/DL. What Les was doing was good enough for 9-10 wins a year until the team stopped buying in, the problem being that isn't good enough.

Les is gone because of Les.

My guess, Les would have probably had a rough season last year, if he had not been fired... this year would have been a disaster. I think Les was a good coach, is a good guy and glad he was at LSU but no doubt he wasn't getting it done.

I think he stayed too long at LSU, had a new AD, and I think he got stubborn because of the new AD.

I think with time off to reply and a change of scenery. Les Miles would dominate the east...

What's your thoughts on that?

I actually recommended Les for Tennessee but not as a head coach, as an associate head coach/head recruiter. One scenario I suggested was Frost as head coach and Les as associate head coach/head recruiter... and Pelini as defensive coordinator. Frost doesn't have the experience so you bring in backup. All this probably could be done for the price of what Butch's salary is.

If Frost bolted in a few years you than have options. As far as Les as a full-time head coach - his time has passed... no way I hire him for a 5-10 year job.

Everyone could see that Miles needed to fix a couple of related issues -- poor QB recruiting and devopment and lack of a balanced offense. He had hired his buddy and yes man Cameron as OC and stubbornly stuck to his 3 yards and a cloud of dust philosophy. He kept promising he would change course and fix those glaring problems, but he was too arrogant and stubborn (stupid) to do so.

Miles is basically a 64 year old version of Butch Jones.

LSU's mistake in firing Miles was their failure to have the right replacement lined up beforehand.

If UGA had won the 2012 SEC CG, they'd have crushed ND for the natty and Richt would likely still be there. He was winning big consistently, but not getting over the final hump and winning the championships he should've been able to win, given the talent level on his teams. UGA knew they were Kirby's dream job and were worried he might get hired by another big program. It was good for Richt to get a fresh reset at his alma mater.

I'm a Richt fan. Where ever he coaches. No argument there. And some say he was tired of Athens anyway and all that came with that job. I lived close by durring his time. But, Kirby has proven already in year 2 that he can also choke and not have his team ready to close out the biggest game of the season up to that point. Or even show up. Good thing we have no plans to hire anything but a perfect coach. lol.

Interesting bit on Richt, and why my lowly self would have kept a coach of Richts character that won like he did. At his peak of popularity in Athens, Alumni and Boosters provided all material and labor for his lake home on Lake Hartwell. Just out of Hartwell about 45 minutes up the road. At some point I guess he decided that it was time to sell the house. What with the grumblings and all. (Of course he wasn't fired till several years later). Never really any sightings of him around town, but we all knew who the house belonged to. Anyhow, the house sold, and since he did not provide any personal funds to build the house, he did not think it would be right to take hte money from the sale. So, he donated all of that to charity. That's integrity. That's the kind of coach I want as long as he wants to coach. His record was impeccable there. They got nit picky on a guy that committed to them and would have retired there probably.

Miles is of the same cloth. And has an impeccable record. That's the kind of coach I want if my two cents was worth three.

I don't think Les is done. I think teams are foolish to pass on him. The irony is if he ends up back in the SEC with all these openings, and waxes us all. And he probably would. and for good measure, he'd take one or two from Saban for ole times sake.

You got nothing. He won 77%. 2 NC. 3 on Saban. The 2 seasons that got him fired he was still just a hair under 70%. Off his mark by a couple games in two seasons. His stubborness so many of you like to speak of led him to be bested by no one in the SEC during his eleven years, except one. Only one. He is equal to or better than any coach in the SEC in the last two and a half decades, except one. His "stubborness"- playing pro style smash mouth football all hte way to the 2nd best SEC coach in 20 plus years behind only one.

Being stubborn can be a good thing and it can be a bad thing as well. The problem is nobody was buying what he was selling anymore including the players. He got a pass in 2015... it was very telling against Wisconsin last year that it wasn't working. Just because he had a good record, it was very obvious that the team was going to suffer in a huge way after the few games of last year. I felt like the changes made by Oregron and Esminger last year salvaged the season.

Oregron is going to have to survive here for a bit, meaning- make the most of the talent because Les really didn't leave the offensive/defensive lines in very good shape. It was actually more telling this year that Les needed to go and probably sooner than they did.

I might not be shocked if another SEC teams hire Les as a head coached, but I certainly will be surprised.

How can you not develope a QB at a place like LSU? That’s who Tennessee would be hiring..

Recruit sub-par QB talent #1. Other than Mett, not sure most of the guys should have been signed since Ryan Perriloux. Evaluation of talent at the QB position hasn't been very good for sure.

He thought.... you line up your big uglies... we line up our big uglies... comes down to 80% my big uglies win... the other 20% of the time we'll let the defense figure it out or every once in a while Les would pull out a great special teams call.

The problem being that isn't going to work in today's game against top 25 defenses.

I thought it was very obvious this year, that LSU needs a little more production from the QB position to beat the better teams.... Alabama is going to make the QB beat them.

Jarret Lee is probably the exception - he could have developed into a decent QB, with him though - 3 years of Crowton.

Poorly QB evaluation, even guys I thought that could develop, I was wrong on - Brandon Harris.

Brandon Harris transferred to North Carolina this year, similar results if not much worse.

I spoke with an LSU fan at the game and he said Les Miles was next in line for LSU AD, and that he recently bought another house in BR.

Alleva contract is for another 3-years.

His big hires are somewhat mixed.

Johnny Jones - D Grade
Coach Oregron/Hiring and Retaining Aranda/Canada - (Solid B+ grade imo, maybe not the big and go home approach)
Will Wade (way too early to grade, but man, the guy has certainly appear to have turned things around in 8 months, might end up being an A+ grade)

There has been rumors of Les being part of LSU in some way.

Three QB's under Miles were drafted.

Russell - bust in hte NFL but a great college QB at the time
Flynn - 7 years in the league as a backup
Mettenberger - free agent this after 3 seasons, but prob should still be a backup somewhere.

Not exactly terrible in eleven years to have 3 of your QB's drafted.

They’ve never had consistency in QB play, as LSU and I were discussing..

Hope they don't consider Les Miles. My how quickly people forget his lack of offense. Couldn't recruit a QB. His unwillingness to change OC and just stick with his "system". His mismanagement of games and the clock. Nobody else's willingness to hire him after he was let go at LSU. South Carolina chose Will Muschamp over Les. Ole Miss probably hasn't talked with him. This should make people worry a little when trying to build up Les Miles.
