Les Miles thread (merged)

Miles was fired because he couldn't take top 10 classes loaded with talent from LA and TX and beat Saban. How on EARTH can anyone think that plus poor coaching and consistently questionable staffing choices would work at UT?

How is Miami doing with their coach this year that was fired for similar reasons???

There is something to spending too much time somewhere even as a great coach.

Miles would be a huge upgrade. At least he knows how to win vs sec west teams. Maybe not the first choice to hire but much better than the choices since fulmer

Would be best fit at Tennessee.

1. Great recruiter
2. Had best teams in league behind Alabama for years in a dominating West division
3. Can get his missing piece with Tennessee's abilities to recruit quarterbacks.
4. Knows the SEC landscape and the relationships with high school coaches in the region
5. Would now have his team in the East division

6. We would get to see what John Kelly, ty chandler COULD actually do!!!
why not just bring back Phil Fulmer than? c-mon son we need to make a splash not someone who eats the turf

Ok once again who is that REALISTIC "splash" hire?
Kelly only other proven coach that would be a possibility.

Everyone else is either lobbying for more $$$
Or has ZERO HC college experience or zero SEC experience

I would give my left nut to have the Hatter coaching in Knoxville. He has been my favorite coach since Fulmer and Spurrier. He recruits. He has unique, original trick plays every big game. He has won the Natty. He is about the only coach to beat Saban more than once. He has a cool as fk personality. I have to give my vote to Miles all day. I probably would rather have him than Gruden. He would have QBs here instead of a backfield of RBs. People forget the fact that he was not as successful in his last year or so is the awful joke QB who averaged 80 yds passing and 10 rushing. Hell,he won the Natty with a horrible QB. The guy who looked like Matt Damon and threw it to the other team half the time? Hi forget his name
I dont Google. Anyway, I LIVE for UT football. I am from Jamestown. I have listened or watched every game since 85. I will bleed Big Orange whether we win again or not. I have to say that Miles would bring instant respect and excitement and credibility back to Tennessee football. When you say Tennessee football these days folks start talking about the Titans! The Oilers have more fans than we do now! Please football God and Lord in Heaven help the fools hire Miles. He can bring Tee and Chavis back and Tee can be the HC in waiting. I pray for this. Please let me enjoy my Volunteer football again before I die. Go Vols!

Look at what USC fans have to say about Tee. Hint: you might forget whether you are reading comments from TN or USC fans. Just replace Tee and Scott, and whoever their coach is with Butch.

There really isn't one - which is why the firing is the easiest part.

I keep speaking about the LSU situation last year but its still pretty relevant. Once you look around and start adding up the ridiculous stuff people would be asking for to leave, you start to realize the options are limited.

I just don't see anyone really out there, a couple of guys maybe a few years out one could look at Brohm - but like I said it would be nice to see another season or two. The guy I really like is David Shaw but moving him is probably not going to happen, another one is Paul Chryst - of course, its hitting the Wisconsin bucket once again.

and Chryst is in a great situation on a lot of levels at Wisconsin. great AD, fairly easy path to c'ship game each year, good tradition yada, yada, yada. and he left Pitt because he WANTED to go to Wiscy.

agree about Shaw. another really good situation, with fair expectations and a path to having really good seasons.

agree with the rest of your post as well. the next big thing is out there.

just a lot harder to see who that is in today's landscape of head coaches.

David Shaw would be AMAZING!!!
Getting him to leave would probably take earthquakes, more fires, and 8 tsunamis though.

If we miss on all the guys who are never going to come here, we might as well just make a run at the Mississippi State head coach. I still want us to go after Justin Fuente in a big way. Make him say no to us.

Actually, not a bad selection there.

Yeah, real solid guy and a solid football coach - low risk to me with a decent top end potential. But not sure I see him leaving there though.

Mullen worries me just because of the spotlight getting brighter.... he has been at a place where 8-9 wins a year gets you a statue. Not the best recruiter in the world either. Florida passed on him TWICE something is up there.

Justin Fuente early returns are good. Same as hiring an assistant coach at this point in his career. But like I said reasons for optimism are there early.

yep. i don't think that's getting stated enough. this was meyer's OC with Tebow, won a natty....and twice since, not a real consideration?

Actually he turned Florida down twice for interviews. Even after Urban left and Tebow was pushing for him to take the job.

Secondly, Mississippi State doesn't exactly sell itself in recruiting like Tennessee does. He also has to out recruit Bama, Auburn, and Ole Miss within a 3 hour radius.

He's done well with the scraps of recruits he gets after the other 3 get their picks. He would be a solid hire. Would instantly improve player development and would bring competence back to the head coaching position. Those are upgrades enough.

Definitely a solid option and my first choice if Chip Kelly says no.

Plus Les Miles absolutely owned Mullen. I cannot understand why people want Mullen so much more than Miles. I know, I know, "it's Mississippi St..." excuse but at some point don't you actually have to win the game to be better? It's like saying you'd rather have Butch than Muschamp.

Fuente would be a solid hire.

Word from Starkville was Mullen had no real interest in UF job. I think (as was stated before) he just really is comfortable where he is.

Mullen over Fuente any day.

so mullen wasn't priority enough to make him tell you no, they just took the "no" an moved on. got it.
:)

seriously, i think that's probably about right, and would probably still be true today if we seek him out. i wouldn't leave if i didn't have to. all the benefits of the SEC head coach gig, w/out all the crap that goes along with it.

he's got rings.

I’d be comfortable too if my fanbase was happy with 8-9 wins every year.

Mullen would have left by now if he was seriously interested in other jobs. He really has no reason to leave.

Also one big thing about his current situation is that his wife is very happy and that they are really big on keeping their kids in one same school system start to finish. I would kill to have him if he brought Todd Grantham with him as DC.

However, I respect his family decision. All of us would do the same.

I wouldn't be upset with Mullen at all. Kelly & Miles just more proven and have coached in the spotlight against the best and have had success at an EXTREMELY high level.

Mullen at Tennessee in the East would consistently be better than 8-9 wins per year.
