I see some on here talking about not wanting Miles because he couldnt beat Saban. Just stop. The fact is coaches like Saban are extremely rare. We may never see another one like him. So if the criteria for our new HC is based upon the ability to beat Saban, then please give the list.
Reading posts on here about Butch, what does one normally see when discussing his short comings? Terrible in game coaching, failure to develop talent, he is in over his head and he doesnt know what it takes to win in the SEC. Maybe we should examine Miles record. From 2005-2016, Miles lost 34 total games. 23 of those losses were to ranked teams. Miles very rarely lost to teams he shouldnt have. The vast majority of Miles teams were very competative even against extremely tough teams like 2010 Auburn and 2012 Alabama. Miles also did something Saban couldnt, he beat a Manziel TAMU twice.
Miles sent a ton of players into the NFL and his guys have been more successful than Saban's. We all know that to win in the SEC you need to win in the trenches. Miles's teams were known for good OL and great DL play. Miles knows exactly what it takes to win at an extremely high level in the SEC. He is an A+ recruiter and a hell of a coach.
If we hired Miles are we going to win the SEC title every year? Nope. Not going to happen. As long as Saban is at Alabama, the chances that anyone wins besides them are slim. But I would suspect we would be winning the East fairly regularly and if not winning it, be competing for it. And isnt that what most of our expectations are for a new HC?
Oh and just for a good read check out this link from last year. Pay attention to number 1 and 2 on the list. See how close they are.
Every current SEC head coach vs. ranked teams
Nick Saban, Alabama/LSU/Michigan State
Overall: 63-37 (.630)
2015: 5-1
Biggest win: 42-14 win over No. 1 Notre Dame, 2013 National Championship Game
As always, Nick Saban is the gold standard when it comes to winning games. The Alabama coach has won 63 percent of his games against ranked opponents, more than any other coach in the SEC. Saban has leveraged that success into five national championships, four of which came in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Les Miles, LSU/Oklahoma State
Overall: 44-26 (.628)
2015: 2-2
Biggest win: 38-24 win over No. 1 Ohio State, 2008 National Championship Game
Many criticize Les Miles for not always getting the most out of his team, but the LSU coach has been lights out against top competition. Miles has won 62.8 percent of his games against AP teams, including a win in the 2008 national champion game. For whatever LSU boosters want to say, Miles is one of the most successful coaches in program history.
Now tell me Miles cannot coach with the best of them.
