Lawn Mower Suggestions

Got a Husky with a 20hp Kawasaki engine. Did a fantastic job after breaking my ass mowing my .8 acres with a push mower for the last 5 years.

I was a little nervous, to be honest, to go with anything entry-level B&S/Kohler. The Vanguard/Commands might be good engines but I've heard horror stories about the Intek/Courage lines.

Got a 10% off coupon and combined it with a 10% military discount. All in all, happy with a 20hp Kawa.

Good call with the Kawi. The Kohlers aren't bad, but I found them to have a pretty high (comparatively) rate of failure from the factory.

As with any other motor, change your oil & filters after each season and you shouldn't have any problems.

What model did you end up getting?

the YT46LS I bought has the 21.5 hp Kawasaki. I have really been impressed with it so far.

Edit: Thanks to the advice from Toujours Pret i went to a dealer. I bought a different model than what Lowes carries but the dealer does not add the $199 warranty fee on top of price. My warranty is included with the dealer, with the dealer doing any warranty work that may be needed.

Glad it worked out for you. Direct dealer support alone is worth any price difference vs a big box.

In my case the direct dealer was actually less.

My dealer had the same model in stock as Lowe's carries, the Husqvarna YTH24K48 . Both had it priced at $1899.00. With Lowe's the 3 year warranty is an additional $199.00. From what I can gather that is mainly Lowes picking up the mower and taking it to get repaired. There was no additional charge at the dealer, therefore the dealer was priced less than Lowe's.

I gave $2150.00 for my YT46LS. I decided to go with it because it has the Kawasaki engine, locking rear differential and a Brushguard .

The YTH18K46.

My mistake, it's 18.5hp not 20hp. It's a new model but the same exact frame/etc but a different engine from their other 46" models.

I'd have rather had the Kawasaki 21.5hp but 20% off was too big too ignore and Lowes only carried the 18.5hp model. I figure it's more than adequate for my lot (.8 acres but about 1/2 is hills and I have quite a few obstacles) and for less than $1,500 after tax and delivered.

The 21.5hp model (the one Gramps got) has quite a few advantages like a 12ga steel bar welded to the deck. I have the great misfortune of living in Alabama and mowing in 95+ degree weather can muddy the senses so any protection I can have for my deck is wanted but I couldn't bring myself to value it at almost $700 more for 3hp more and a reinforced deck.

I also felt safer with a manual deck engagement (mine has) over an electric one (more expensive one has). The way I figure... it's just another thing that could break and be far more expensive to repair/replace. Just my take on it though.

EDIT: I will say that if Lowes carried the YT46LS I'd have gone with that without hesitation.

I just purchased a self propelled McLane 7 blade reel mower. Cuts great. Makes the Bermuda look really nice. Quite a bit more than a rotary mower but it is built to last. Made in the USA which is a plus.

FWIW, I used to have a lawn service and I used a 32" SCAG with a velke. All my lawns were 1/3 acres and I needed something agile and narrow enough to fit through 36" fence gates.
SCAG's are durable and reasonably priced.

I borrowed a friends once, took a little bit to get used to but great mower.

I have a 50" Dixie Chopper Silver Eagle with the Generac. Great mower, cut my time down from 3 hours with a Husqvarna tractor to just a little over an hour.

How's the Husq treated you, gramps? Ihave recommended their lawn tractors to several people, no news is good news.

Neighborhood kid hopped up on moonpies and RC Cola, and a yard machine push mower off of craigslist should get the job done and save you enough money to buy a hammock or a john boat.

It has been great. Thanks for your recommendation.

Most important thing Gramps is proper maintenance. As long as you do that it should last a long time. My neighbor's Husq. has given him all kinds of problems but he doesn't maintain it and he spends a whole lot more money getting it fixed-some never learn. Any of them will take care of you if you take care of them.
