Lawn Mower Suggestions

I'll still place my stakes with a Bobcat zero turn, but that might be more than you're looking to spend. I'll say this though: it's 5 to 7 years out, and we've had no maintenance issues at all as far as I can recall (unless Dad hasn't told me, but I'd imagine he would).

The only issue with the Ransomes is that if you need parts for anything outside of the engine you're better off fabricating them yourself.

Z turn is the way to go, you'll get the hang of it in 20 minutes. Get a Toro.

I looked at Home Depot site. They have the Toro TimeCutter SS5000 50 in. 23 HP Kawasaki V-Twin Zero-Turn Riding Mower with Smart Speed for $2999.00.

Your opinion of this mower and price ?

What would you recommend for a standard lawn tractor ?

The one I have now is a Troy Bilt with around 550 hours on it. Mechanically it has been a good mower but it does not cut even, never has. I am thinking it is the 42" deck.

Oh, and I just now remembered that my grandpa (on other side of the family) also has a Bobcat zero turn (maybe a 52 to 56 inch deck). He bought it after my dad liked his so much. I don't think he's had any problems with it either (with around 2 to 3 acres to mow) and has probably had his the last 3 or 4 years.

Closet dealer is 49 miles away per the Bobcat site.

That's right about the going rate. As far as tractors, I'd recommend a middle tier or higher Husqvarna. Troy Bilt / Cub/ Crapsman/ Toro tractors are all made by MTD, which is more or less crap.

Deere tractors are nice, but significantly more pricey than the Husqvarna, and other than Husky having a Kohler and Deere running a Briggs they're made from the same parts, mechanically.

Very interesting.

Something like this what you are referring to ?

This is the highest rated Husqvarna on the Lowes site.

Husqvarna 24-HP V-Twin Hydrostatic 48-in Riding Lawn Mower $1,899.00

Good machine. Though you might want to talk to a dealer instead of a big box

I have both, a Toro and a Husqvarna dealer, with 10 miles of my home. Both are closed on Saturday afternoon. I will check them out Monday.

Thank you for your advise . I do appreciate it. It does help having someone in the business to talk to.

I want to go with the Toro Z but I am a little concerned. I have a relative that bought a snapper Z, ran through a fence and parked it, went back to his old mower. I could probably pick it up on the cheap side.

I'll let you know next week what I buy.. Thanks again for your help

Like any machinery, practice makes perfect. Give yourself an open space with nothing to crash into, and you'll get the hang of it in no time.

this is the exact model I bought last year, and would definetly recommend...check a few home depots, I found one that had been retuned and ended up getting it for $1600 bucks,,,,

I mow an 1.5 acres in about 45 minutes

You were lucky... congrats

That is fast mowing. It takes me around 2 - 2 1/2 hours to mow around 2 acres with this 42".

With a John Deere you're paying a lot more for a coat of green paint.

I've heard nothing but great things about JD. I also just bought a d105 and love it. Not mowing too large of an area but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Plus mine was made right in Greenville, TN!

I have a John Deere GT 235 with a 48" deck. My yard looks like a golf course when I finish. It blows the trim out very evenly. Brand new it was around $5000. You might find a trade in at a JD dealer that is still in good shape and save a bundle. Search tri green equipment dot com (no spaces)

This. Most the mowers from Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears are made by the same companies or put together with the same parts.

This is true. Hence my reference to a real toro earlier.
Deere is the exception. They are built to Deere standards. Very few have the Briggs engine. All I've ever owned had either Kawasaki or kohler. My last 4 were all diesels. John Deere 1445. I owed 4 of these at the same time and a couple John Deere Ztrak's. (gas-Kawasaki )

Kubota and Deere stand above the rest. Second below those I'd choose exmark or bad boy.

I had a John Deere for 11 years. When I was in the market for a new one a few years back, I looked at JD's again. I looked at the ones at HD. I talked to a guy at AgPro about them and he said they were cheaper made version of the real thing. He added that the ones at HD werent made for big yards. Said the front end parts as well as the decks werent on par with the higher end mowers. He said that you get what you pay for.

Exactly. They (both Deere and toro) were trying to get in to the lower market of folks. People who wanted a Deere but didn't want the price of a Deere.

I highly recommend the Husqvarnas. Only thing I like better about a JD is that the forward and reverse are done by a foot pedal as opposed to by hand on a Husky. Mine is going on 4 years old and I have yet to have the first problem with it. I service it every spring and was it after every use. Will it last 11 years? That is yet to be seen, but thus far I have no reason to think it wont. I think I paid 2200 for it.

Yup. Any Z that isn't Toro/Xmark/Hustler isn't worthwhile IMO. Deere are nice but they cost more than the equivalent.

Everride is the best cutting mower that was made. I don't know if they are still made.

Hustler is the best handling.

John Deere mowers are weak when it comes to the hydraulics. I am not sure if they ever went away from the single pump.
