Last game of the season to be played, do you think Phil Fulmer knew what he was doing hiring Pruitt now?

Everyone does realize we didn’t beat anyone of note this year right? We will have won games against two bowl eligible teams.

True and I'm not ready to annount him the savior.
However we are beginning to beat the teams we should. Hopefully Ga State and BYU were the last we will see if that type of play.

If we beat Vandy and win a bowl game i think we can expect big things next year.

Yeah, after everyone except Leach turned us down and yet Fulmer didn't feel around the bottom of the apple barrel because there were so many apples hanging on the tree! He got what was left and what was left had us in a losing record his first year and losses against Georgia State and BYU in his second. Not only that but, has not beat anyone of significance this year but have delivered us moral victories, however.

Yeah, Fulmer knew what he was doing, alright. Maybe this works out or maybe it doesn't. Either way he is attached to Pruitt.
"What was left" had a perfectly good job at a winning program. Fulmer went looking for him, not vice-versa.

I am aware we are competing at the medium level of the SEC. Thats up from the basement level where we have been the last 2 years. Glad to get out of there. I don't think anyone expects to go from the basement to the penthouse in 2 years? We are back to beating the teams we are supposed to beat which gives us entertaining games to watch. I don't know how long we will stay at this level, I am just hoping we don't revert back.

That doesn't tell the whole story. Mizzou and ms state could go bowling. USCe could have gone bowling and they beat uga shortly before we derailed their season. And all 5 teams that beat us are bowling.

How many 2nd year coaches don't lose their team with a start like UT had?

Doesn’t change the fact that the best team we beat, however you want to judge it, will won six games. That’s nothing to celebrate.

I'm ecstatic that Pruitt has turned this year around and the team has improved but let's pump the brakes since this is just his 2nd year.

Remember we were all aboard the Butch train ending 2015 and entering 2016.

I never saw Butch Jones "coach' as in teach his players like Pruitt has. I am very pleased with Jeremy Pruitt as a head coach. I say this from what I'm seeing on the sideline and what I'm seeing and reading from the players. The guy is a teacher, motivator and he knows his X's and O's. He's a hands on coach. He chews out his players and rather than rebel they seem to respond. I can't say enough of how he got his team back on track after the horrible start and blowouts to Alabama, Ga and FL. I figured the team would pack it in. They did just the opposite. He does have some players that'll be drafted in April but his talent was thin due to the changeover from Butch Jones. The silver lining to that start is that no one is going to come calling to pry him away. He does need to pick up recruiting but I like what I see. I think they made a good choice when they hired him.

This whole rebuild is still a work in progress. Pruitt as a coach is still a work in progress. Even the great coaches like Saban and Belichick had learning pains early in their career. I see a young Tom Coughlin in Jeremy Pruitt. I think the big 3 sports at UT, baseball, football and basketball are in good hands right now and looking up

This isn't a season to evaluate on paper. Judge things like are the players buying in? Are they learning the system? Are they improving? Do they quit and pout when Pruitt pulls them aside and chews them out of do they learn and move on? I'm liking what I'm seeing

I think end of the yr wins and carryover to the following season is overrated. What can make next yr a big year is if recruiting picks up. Personnel wise we're yet not on the level of FL, Ga and AL. But if we do no more than tread water we'll be no worse than 8-4 next yr

Look guys, we weren't in a position to get a "proven" coach. We found a gamble, and we took it. Pruitt will still have some growing pains that will cost us wins, but I honestly believe he is the right man for the job. And the staff is phenomenal. When I saw this team at the end of September, I thought we were done for. Pruitt rallied this team to make something out of nothing and end up better than last season. That is the mark of a good coach. To keep this team together and fighting says a lot. Look at Arkansas and FSU, both with coaches in their second year, now fired. But those teams quit on the coach and that was all they could do. He will do fine. Just let him grow and understand it's a climb back to the top.

I for Incomplete.

Pruitt needs to have a better year next year than this year, 8 regular season wins should be the floor expectation next season. The East has one good team and one okay team. We get Arkansas from the West. Should be 3-1 ooc, 5-3 at worst in the SEC. Though it would be nice to beat one of Florida/Georgia/Alabama. This year was such a great opportunity, the schedule was the easiest we've seen in a long long long time. 8 regular season should have been the floor this year.

Now, don’t be distorting reality. He asked a coordinator of a winning program if he would be a HC t at P5 school. Coincidently (or not) that HC job paid millions more over the length of a contract compared to his coordinator salary.

9 regular season wins next year or its a let down

I was all for the hire. However, with the way we finished last season, and started this one, it was hard not to have major doubts. The ability to continue to get buy-in from the players has been amazing, and the turn around has been very solid. I always said that the 2nd year could be worse than the first, as is often the case with a major rebuild.

Having said all that, I think Pruitt needs this team to have a great off-season, and start out next season the right way. That, and a solid recruiting class, and I believe he will be on his way to having a very good tenure at UT.

Fulmer did the best he could, under very difficult circumstances. I am back to believing it is going to work out.

So seeing progress and making a bowl getting 15 extra practices isn’t something to celebrate. We may not be where we want to be but we are certainly better than we were last year. we could’ve won more but the turn around has been impressive.

Yes. Pruitt is an OG type of coach. He's young enough to understand today's game, but he's no snowflake. He knows talent when he sees it. Knows how to develop the talent. Plays smash-mouth FB with a modern edge. Like I said in another post, these boys will run through a brick wall for him. I think Fulmer seen the diamond in the rough. He took a chance on an elite assistant coach. Pruitt has had to learn on the job. It's been messy, no doubt, but I can comfortably say he knows what he's doing.

I have always felt Fulmer made a very good hire with Pruitt. Time will still tell the entire story but I like where we are headed at the moment. GBO!!!!!
Pruitt is a real coach! Lord, how long has it been? Oh wait...2008 with Fulmer.
The days of being "Champions of life" or participation medals are over! Pruitt expects and instills perfection in his players. Thank God! WGWTFA!!!

So how long are you going to ride the talent excuse? 3 recruiting classes will be on campus next season...if there is a talent deficit next year then i will say Pruitt aint the guy. 9-3 should be the expectaion next year as this team easily has the talent to have that record. 10-2 or better should not be out of the question.
