Lady Vols Softball

Agree with that and it caught up to them. The upper level teams from the South are on par with the CA teams now in all areas of the game. For us to be successful moving forward, we have to establish keeping our Top Tier kids home 80% as well sprinkle kids in from the pipelines of GA, SC, CA, TX and NJ. The ones out of state cannot be misses but have to be plug in kids almost day 1.

Agreed! It will also free up more money when you're able to stay to one region. Ryleigh White comes to mind when we just did not have enough money for her and she went to Texas....Cannot wait until the increase scholarship numbers for baseball and softball

Not sure money was the issue with Ryleigh, form what I remember she was high on Coach White when he was at Oregon but didn’t like the distance. Commits here and then Coach White goes to TX and the rest is history. They find money for those kids especially the ones they get locked in early like her.

They just turned down the request recently so i dont see that ever happening!

The lack of scholarships is even more reason to go after in state recruits because they receive lottery scholarship money to help with tuition.
Check the roster! We already do that but do not get the studs except on a limited occasion for reasons mentioned her nearly every day it seems. I have not looked but i bet we have more from Tn than any time in the past!

I agree with you 100%. The problem with that is a lot of the big-time in-state kids still want the prestige of the "full ride" and will turn down 25% money at UT to take 75% at an out of state school so they can claim "full ride" status. Especially those that play for certain travel ball programs in baseball and softball.

It's dumb as hell, but I've seen it happen to UT in baseball, softball, soccer and track in recent years. Kids, their parents and their travel/AAU coaches get offended when UT lays out a scholarship package that includes lottery or any non-athletic aid. There are a bunch of coaches in Georgia that do the same thing, which is why you see their non-revenue programs struggle a lot more than they should considering the talent base they recruit.

Does this only happen at UT and ga?

I don't have as many contacts in other states, but it seems like there are a lot of issues with it in those two states.

I know in Florida there are a lot of travel programs in soccer and softball that work hard to connect their athletes with academic money to make the most of in-state scholarships and tuition.

Athletic money is better than academic money because on a academic scholarship a higher gpa is required than on a full ride or athletic money.

Freshman and Soph's get $1750 per semester with HOPE (lottery) scholarship. Bumps to $2250 as Jr and Sr. Only accounts for approx. 15-20% of total fee's (tuition, room, meals).

I believe it is 9 TN to 13 out of state kids. You want to save money, for out of state kids. Tennessee needs to direct attention to Top Tier kids across the state who has a parent that is a state employee 25% savings before other funds kick in. Free money to the pool just by doing a little research.

The requirements for the HOPE scholarship are quite easy. You only have to get a 21 on the ACT or have 3.0 GPA coming out of HS. Both of those should be quite easy, if we're being honest, but the ACT requirement alone makes being eligible extremely easy. To keep it, you only have to keep a 2.75 GPA per semester your first two years, and a 3.0 your last two years (as the money goes up).

Seems like you have a pretty good understanding of the local and Southeast travel ball circuit. Hearing you see coaches at PGF Nat's and Firewworks, I'm guessing your kid is going through the paces now on a high level TB team. Is she interested in UT as a program? I know a few years back, it was kind of regarded that Tennessee girls would mostly be base runners and situational players. I'm saying this kind of in jest, but that was some TB coaches view of the Weekly's program. Looking at the top 10 kids playing now, only 3 Tennessee kids are playing on a regular basis, including Ashley Rogers.

Not saying it has not happened. But it's not often that girls being offered fall below the academic standard to receive the most money by universities. If you have two kids and all things are equal (or close enough), the academic kid gets the nod.

Pretty plugged in but she will be leaving the area to play. She never really considered TN because there was no interest on their end until the end, she camped elsewhere over the years because she is/was somewhat local and didn't feel the need to camp at home. She did enjoy when a school came to Knoxville and made sure she was there, because the head coach wanted her there to see them beat TN and they did. With that being said we/she is and will always be a fan of the program she grew up watching, but learned early on she was not the what they look for early but try to get late.
