I honestly feel like this is a secondary issue to who they’re recruiting along with which programs they seek to recruit. Why does the #7 batter off of a Fury team feel entitled to full ride money? Why not give the big offer to the pitchers and 1-4’s on the programs they traditionally recruit and backfill with the 1-4’s on the lesser known high caliber teams who are basically lesser known because they lack a National pitcher or have a team full of working parents. We all know that pitching and hitting is the key to success. The worst kept secret in travel is that you pay to get exposure in super pools. Do we really think that the richest kids who can afford to go to events in CO and CA are the most talented?I agree with you 100%. The problem with that is a lot of the big-time in-state kids still want the prestige of the "full ride" and will turn down 25% money at UT to take 75% at an out of state school so they can claim "full ride" status. Especially those that play for certain travel ball programs in baseball and softball.
It's dumb as hell, but I've seen it happen to UT in baseball, softball, soccer and track in recent years. Kids, their parents and their travel/AAU coaches get offended when UT lays out a scholarship package that includes lottery or any non-athletic aid. There are a bunch of coaches in Georgia that do the same thing, which is why you see their non-revenue programs struggle a lot more than they should considering the talent base they recruit.

Good in theory on just showing up and offering. Many parents don't understand the concept of offers and have the belief that full-rides exist in baseball and softball, not true for majority. We've lost our spot at the table and slowly got pushed further away, those kids you speak of are also entertaining the same offer from those now seated at the table. As far as the CA and CO exposures, I can promise you many families struggle to make those trips happen from both coast. To me it goes back to the basics - better evaluations of needs, stop the cattle call camps, keep top in-state kids home with 80% success rate, less value of travel coaches in recruiting and lastly a self evaluation of the staff and why are we having such drastic player turnover. We are maybe trending out of the top 10 in the SEC, throw in the FSU, Duke, Clemson, James Madison, Liberty, ND, Indiana, Syracuse, UConn, Michigan, Louisiana all coming at the same kids we are and our staffs job got harder.
Absolutely. Sadly it seems we as a program/fans are just now seeing it on the field. It has been a slow bleed to get here for awhile and it won’t be a quick fix as those other teams won’t be taking steps back. It’ll be a Vitello type transition for this to take care of itself on the field.Liked we talked about earlier in this thread the explosion of softball in the south has helped. I mean I'm now seeing the Big 10 come into Alabama grabbing players. They used to live on the west coast too. New programs starting at Duke, Clemson, and Liberty cut into Tennessee getting players out of those states they used to get.
I keep telling you all a change in HC would benefit the program. Not trashing the Weekly's here, they have accomplished a lot and made TN softball what it is but the respect is gone now, recruits are not attracted to TN softball due to its past reputation. A coaching change to a younger more dynamic HC would help.

wholeheartedly agree on the South and recruiting. The landscape has changed and the parity is on par. Alyson Habetz is as good as any on the recruiting trail too and has had a major impact on the program.Agreed....I saw Pat Murphy even change his style in recruiting and coming back south....the SEC will start to only have rosters built with girls from the SEC footprint
Pretty remarkable how quickly Duke has taken off. They could legitimately end up in the WCWS in only the 4th year of their program.Liked we talked about earlier in this thread the explosion of softball in the south has helped. Yes, Coach Young is the real deal and Coach Josh Bloomer to watch if the Tennessee job becomes open. Coach Valentino has been promoted to HC at UConn and will have them competing soon.Pretty remarkable how quickly Duke has taken off. Let's slow our roll. They only hit .286 as a team and haven't exactly played a tough schedule so far. Pitching is definitely their strong suit, though, and generally strong pitching beats out strong hitting, especially in post season. I do think they are developing into a nice program, but it remains to be seen how good they and Clemson are going to be. FSU owns the ACC and has for some time so it will be interesting to see if they can challenge them in the ACC.
