Knowles/Portal changes etc.

He’ll get courted for sure. I think one of Heupel’s strengths is clear honest communication. No player is surprised about where they stand, and what they need to do to move up.
This was almost exactly what was communicated to me from my friend & OK State alum who is connected to Knowles. While Knowles said Franklin was a good guy who he respected very much as a coach, Knowles said there was so somtimes a disconnect between the Franklin the recruiter/salesman and Franklin the head football coach. (This included promised playing time or at least perception they had been given a promise, hedging on where a player currently stood in regard to competing for PT, etc). In at least 2 situations Knowles was forced to give more PT to guys he felt (along with position coach) weren't ready or needed to show more to earn it. He specifically talked about better alignment in communication styles between him & CJH versus at PSU

I tend to agree. In my original post, I was saying that teams are going to have to improve at Billyball and find high value against the dollars this year to combat the teams with endless means.
I like the ideal of a tier 2 QB bc we have seen what CJH can do with QBs and we have good young talent in that room and surround the tier 2 QB with great talent and develop the studs you recruit

Spend more on defense
That’s what’s appears to be the way to win championships again
Get big physical guys who can set the tone early in games

I’m not sure if that’s true. Could be. It goes in cycles. I was most impressed by three teams in their talent analysis and use of funds: Indy, Candy, and Ole Miss. None of them were in the top tier of NIL.

This is true however Ole Miss spent a lot in the transfer portal. I was thinking they were ranked #1 and #3 2 years in a row for the best transfer signing. With that said most of those are one and done players.

Hope we can have similar success this off season. We have did well in the past just didnt land enough to fill all the gaps.

This portal stuff reminds me of the James Spader/ Kurt Russell movie.

I’m driving, I can’t to do the full semester on NIL, rev share, Adidas. I will say that we are not relying on Angel boosters for our NIL budget. We may call in Angel boosters to chase some big names or increase our resources quickly. We have a very stable and diverse NIL pool otherwise.
Glad to see my 25 a month being put to good use. 😜

It's sounds like Spye needs us common fans to kick in 25 a month or more. I definitely don't have the right to complain about spending other people's money as none of us should anyway.

Should I pitch in before or after I’m charged a mortgage just to take my family of 4 to a game where I’m watching from the nosebleeds, pay astronomical in stadium food prices, oh and also my additional 10% “players fee” expense?

We are talking to, are interested in Leavitt. Like it or not, Heupel and GMac and his people all understand he needs some physical development to take the hits. We will pursue a qb, and will not aim for a backup. Unfortunately, Leavitt is an example of a player who fits the superpower bidding scenario. Both LSU and Oregon have open checkbooks and they both want him too. If we were to succeed, it would be driven by an Angel booster filling in the needed funds as we did with Ament. Leavitt's market price is perceived to have grown from 2mm annually to perhaps 4-5. He's probably out of our range.
Well, maybe Heup man needs to make all these other schools overpay. Raise the bidding, make other teams spend more. And there is value in Tennessee other than money. Might take some creativity to figure out what other things kids might value. Leavitt for example, 2mm for a base figure + some other form of asset, investment. Maybe some sort of, if you accomplish this during the season, you get xyz at the end of the season as a reward. Idk just spitballing.

I understand that i don't have season tickets just come up for few games but I understand. Danny should kick in a million himself.

Thanks, SF for the news, as always.

Reading this, I do not get the warm fuzzies that we will be competing for championships soon and we have to develop the analytics to spend better and are behind there.

I think part of the issue is that CJH thinks really high of 2 QBs and both will be out of their price range. I think Oregon, LSU, TTU, & Miami can & will pay more for QB than Vols. Indiana has a couple boosters really willing to write the checks with their recent results. Word is a OK State booster is willing to go to 3 million for Drew Mestemaker. Throw in another 4-6 schools with decent NIL support looking for a QB and I think most these guys will fall far short of expectations. As an OU fan, most OU people are very disappointed in return on Mateer (and Arbuckle the OC) even when factoring in his injury, OL injuries, and receivers struggling.

If it's me & given CJH offensive production at every stop, I bring in a solid affordable option & put more money in the trenches.

This thread is a bit all over the place as it captures a few different aspects, but not organized perfectly. Just sharing some observations from long conversations with friends inside the department and the collective:

This will be the first year where player value is represented in market price with established values for players calculated before they enter team negotiations. I don’t have the time to elaborate, but this will be more about players generating alpha over perceived market value. This is 10x more sophisticated than it was last year. The key will be identifying players whose value is above perceived market value based on a formula that weights talent, body type, measurable and established performance. Unfortunately I believe we are behind other programs in deep analytics. Not surprisingly, Vandy and Indiana used analytics to identify players whose value was greater than market, with a focus on a metric that leans more on experience and proof than speculation. Our coaches have been above excellent at eye test evaluations on talent, and our transfers typically perform above their paper grades. We are not good at identifying high value players against market. That has to change quickly. Knowles understands analytics and will be quick to share recommendations on how we can improve.

One huge advantage of the Knowles hire— he’s not a jerk. He’s an excellent teacher, patient detail guy, but he doesn’t chase off people. He mentors them. You already can see this in the coaches who are following him. This will be true of past players too. Don’t judge a former PSU player based on PSU’s 25 record. They were building an A+ talent asset, and had some exceptional young and developed talent. Like Franklin or not, he is exceptional at spotting undervalued defensive talent and developing them quickly. He was such a believer in Knowles, that he gave full control to him. We’re going to get some good PSU, potentially OSU and other players that believe Knowles and team can grow their stock for the draft.

Our incoming Freshman class grades off the charts on high alpha over stars/player rating. Many guys are true positional game-changers. Many on staff believe this class is the best in the country regardless of rank. Our portal game, money game, analytics game needs to take a big jump fast.

I’d look for Knowles to move very quickly on four or five guys at safety, Leo, interior DL, corner to stabilize things.

On O, Heupel and his team are good at grading players, but we have a ceiling on budget that has been passed by the superpowers, and the bidding this year will be both sophisticated and aggressive. Right now some of the same boosters who banked Ament’s signing are being recruited to be ready if we need a big gun, but can’t bid effectively.

As Larry mentioned, we have to fit our needs inside our budget unless new money comes in.

It will be interesting to see how we fare in this new landscape.
Long shot... but I've been working on CFB player analytics for a while and I have something I intend to start bringing to teams in the near future. Happy to chat if you think you might be able to make a connection.

Honestly think Vols end up with Alonza, Colandrea, or Colton Joseph when it all shakes out.

Sounds like Knowles & the former PSU/OSU coaches fully expect AJ Harris & Xavier Gilliam to be here. Told they feel very good about Bryce West, King Mack, Elliot Washington, and Zuriah Fisher. Also have real shot at Chaz Coleman, CJ Hicks, and Dominic Kirks.

If they land 75% of those guys you are probably looking 2 starters in your secondary, 2 starters on DL, and 2 quality depth peices

Love it. I always enjoy your analytics. They make sense. Good luck! Hopefully our Vols bring you on board in some capacity

I agree, I could see the James Madison QB or UNLV QB just because they have one year left and then we have 2 stud QB's that has had time to learn the offense and put on some weight.

Do you have any analysis on the QBs in the portal?
