Knowles Expected to be DC

Huh? Couldn't stop Nico I ama leavya on the worse ucla team in team history. Makes sense.
I knew this was coming. Just focus on the facts that he had the #1 defense in the country in 2024 at Ohio State and this year held Oregon to 17 points in regulation before the wheels came off for reasons unknown.

The scheme is so sophisticated that a penn state defense filled with nfl talent cant stop the worse offense(ucla) in college football. Where is the template or blue print for these massive results in year 2?
You cannot seriously hold that against him. The wheels came off the bus for PSU this year for some reason. The AD there felt it was more a Franklin problem than it was a coordinator problem.

You can cherry pick a game or two if you like but the guy had a couple of really good defenses at Oklahoma state before moving on to Ohio State and being in charge of some really stout units.

He also had the #2 defense at Ohio State in 2023.

should we have just focused on Banks 2024 defense and kept him?

The breakdown of Knowles/his defenses is it always takes a year for it to get properly implemented. Apparently a very complicated/hard to learn scheme, but once learned, is really good.

Which makes one question why we'd go with him considering this fan base couldn't handle a single down year from Banks, but whatever I guess.

Like the hire, but it will likely require patience before elite results are seen.

Fan base could handle it. Certain posters on Vol Nation couldn’t handle it.

This is a huge hire. He was the most sought after DC a year ago. I’m not blaming the Penn State disaster on him
Everybody acts like Penn st D was abysmal. With all the drama and the team giving up when franklin was canned, they still finished 34 in total defense. That is pretty respectable given the circumstances. This is an excellent hire. He had #1 D in country at OSU and #4 at OK state in 2021. This is a home run.

CJH gets fired, Kirby gets hired....

some vol fans.... Don't want, he barely beat TN this year.

A special lot.

The word on Knowles is his defense takes a couple of years to implement.

Can some of you guys educate me on why that might be true? We had some guys in here seriously debating the pros and cons of the 2-4-5 Nickel D relating to Walters, so what about Knowles?

Can you guys who study D bring us up to speed on his defensive philosophy and particularly why it has been said it takes a couple of years to fully get installed. Thanks.

Y'all are helpless. We just hired a national championship winning coach who coordinated 2 of the best defenses the country has seen in the past 5 years. Did he have a flawless 2025? No, of course not. Georgia gave up 41 to us and 35 to Ole Miss but I guarantee if we hired their defensive coordinator all the boys here would have a boner.
