I'm really not sure they do. I've seen too many defenders trying to throw a shoulder at the ball carrier and knock him over. It looks good if it works but it's not good tacking in nearly all cases. Too many defenders flying straight head on at the RB or receiver when they should break down, give up a few yards and make the stop. Too much flying at the QB on sack attempts and not containing him. Bad angles. And that's for starters.Players know how to tackle. They just have to want it.
So our defense won’t stop anyone on on third and long or stop the run. Gotcha we have to wait for year two for that? One concern i've heard is that his defense is complicated and requires a learning curve. Some concerns about how well the players can perform in 1 year.
Maybe the thought is a "push" for next year and set up 27-30 for a run with Faze as QB
If he’s better than third and Chavis, that’s the most important thing. We all know that he’s not a first year turn around type coach, but he is the best DC hire that we have had in decades.
If he fell into Fulmer’s lap, Fulmer would have taken the pass, because he was always too paranoid (back stabbing) to make this type of hire.
Got to give Danny White some kudos too.

Let me guess, you also didn't want Kevin Steele in 2011 because his defense gave up 70 in the Orange BowlThe scheme is so sophisticated that a penn state defense filled with nfl talent cant stop the worse offense(ucla) in college football. Where is the template or blue print for these massive results in year 2?
We'd have made the College Football Playoffs this year with his Penn State defense; Ohio State and Penn State have no concept of what a truly "disastrous" defense looks likeEverybody acts like Penn st D was abysmal. With all the drama and the team giving up when franklin was canned, they still finished 34 in total defense. That is pretty respectable given the circumstances. This is an excellent hire. He had #1 D in country at OSU and #4 at OK state in 2021. This is a home run.
I've read this comment that his defenses are complicated , learning curve etc, so help me out. Seems like defense would be fairly easy to grasp because you would be playing based on how the other teams line up. They either run or they pass. We can rush more guys or less, or play zone or man to man, . Not trying to be smart a** but with todays portal jumping, we may not have the same players 2 years in a row. I can't get my mind around the defense needing a year to grasp how to play defense .One concern i've heard is that his defense is complicated and requires a learning curve. Some concerns about how well the players can perform in 1 year.

Yep. Operating a nuclear reactor on a sub has a learning curve. Lots of details to learn how to harness 60,000 SHP. But once they get it, there is nothing that can touch that sub if it's running right. One concern i've heard is that his defense is complicated and requires a learning curve. There's a lot of miserable, bottom of the pond, shoulda been spit out morons in this fanbase-VN thinks Tim Banks sucks and has pretty much said anyone is an upgrade.
- VN says Josh Heupel won’t fire his buddy Banks.
-Heupel cans Banks. The DC search is on.
- Started to hear traction about Ryan Walters being the guy.
-VN seems to be kind of excited.
-However you wanna slice it, Jim Knowles has been a top defensive name in CF for quite a few years.
-Most on VN had him as one of their dream hires.
-Of course most on here, including myself, said Knowles would be a fantastic hire but it’s nothing but a pipe dream.
-All of a sudden that pipe dream seems to be more of a reality. Josh Heupel went out and possibly hired one of the biggest names in college football.
-As expected, we have dumb fans that somehow are upset and finding fault with Heupel hiring someone like Knowles.
Good God. I guess to some of you Josh Heupel can’t do anything right.
