The one big difference in the Kiffin and Fulmer approaches to coaching centers on practice intensity. Kiffin has the Vols hitting at full speed every day.Fulmer babied his Vols, and they often came up short against formidable foes. Ex-Vol head coach John Majors, whose family name is synonymous with Tennessee football, likes what he's seen during Kiffin's practices.Majors said the Vol coaches are teaching technique and fundamentals and the players' energy seems high."They know how to practice," Majors said, but he advises fans not to be overly enthusiastic about Tennessee being coached by someone with a brief NFL coaching background.Kiffin failed to develop a successful track record when he coached the Oakland Raiders. Majors is telling us to evaluate Kiffin on the basis of what the Vols do against the Floridas, Alabamas and Georgias of the SEC, not against each other or breather opponents like Western Kentucky. And my advice is: Don't believe most of what you read or hear about the Vols in the Knoxville media, otherwise you might become convinced the Vols are much better than they are.(Gilbert,DNJ)

This guy writes the same article over and over again. It's incredible.

When I explain to people why I have zero respect for the opinions of the majority of the sports media, Gilbert is one of the first examples I raise.

From the video's they've shown, Kiffin's practices do seem to push the players harder, at least while they are filming.

I don't see Majors visiting the practices often when Fulmer was HC.

In regards to this, I am surprised I never see John Pennington bashed on here. That guy is horrendous. The tv show they do on Sunday morning might be the worst production in the history of television.

The major difference I see between Fulmer and Kiffin's practices is that I can actually attend Kiffin's practices.

I don't mention him because I long since quit paying attention to anything he's involved with.

Gilbert was involved in a literal vendetta against Tennessee in the late 90s, in the same way many of our fans seem to believe that ESPN has a vendetta. The man was associated with the University for almost 3 decades as the director of news operations, and has been on an athletic witch hunt directed at Tennessee since at least the day he retired.

1. Did Majors really say that about Kiffin and if so, when?

2. If Majors really did say it, does that mean that he will be judged on what he did against Bama?

I imagine that if Majors said anything like that, it was probably taken way out of context by the writer to make it sound as negative as possible toward the current staff.

I'll have a special place in my heart for Pennington because he wrote a piece (quoting former un-named players) about Fulmer two years back that had the Fulmerites respond back with this...

I would think that it is an understatement to say Gilbert took him way out of context. Everything I've seen before now seems to indicate Majors has a lot of respect for this staff, and I can't see Majors (esp. considering his troubles beating Bama) wanting to comment about judging him based on Bama/UF...

This is the Pennington article from 2007 that got everything stirred up...

Pennington: Former players have concerns GoVolsXtra

Normally, when a player tells me “things are easier now than they used to be,” I shrug it off as “I used to walk to school uphill both ways” kind of stuff. Folks always think they had it tougher than anybody else.

But when I had a couple of ex-Vols tell me of specific areas of concern within the current program, I began to track down more former players to see if they agreed.

Indeed, certain things were brought up again and again by player after player: practice intensity, competitive spirit in the weight room, and player development.

According to the players, there have also been major changes in the way the scout team is run.

“I started out on scout team and I watched the transition,” said a former player who played in the late 1990s and the 2000s. “We used to really get after it on scout team, then they started telling us to ‘stand here, don’t move, you might get someone hurt.’”

“We don’t want to get someone hurt?” another player piped up.

are injuries becoming one of the differences? cause we've got a lot of players going down hard in the last few weeks
