dude did wonders for UT, but he wasn't doing us any favors there at the end. Administration made it way worse than it should have been. Should have had a big name lined up if they were going to fire him mid season. People tend to gloss over the down years and only remember the 98s and 01s

Your dream job also typically doesn't become available because the current coach bails at an awkward time in the football calendar due to incoming NCAA penalties. That whole thing was a fluke situation. I don't think Kiffin intended to screw Tennessee, he just didn't care if he did.

If Carroll left USC right at the end of the previous regular season like most coaches who leave jobs do, Kiffin would have bolted for USC at that time, not in January. That still would have sucked, but we at least be looking for a new HC when everyone else was. If Carroll never left USC, Kiffin likely stays at Tennessee for at least a few years before getting fired or leaving. The timing of Kiffin's departure, after all the bowl games were over, just weeks before NSD, and after just a single season, was the big killer. We had to hire a coach after all the potential candidates we would have vetted had taken jobs, which is how we ended up with Dooley. If not Dooley, it would have been a coach just like him.

I told my brother when Kiffin left that it will set UT's program back 10 years. I hate being right all the time.

At this point, why does anyone gave a FRF about Kiffin? Now that Layla is outta the picture, why don't you boys hung up on him move to Boca and try your luck?

Kiffin loves UT and wishes he would've stayed every single day. That's why he's always talking about us. But he needs to worry about those Owls keeping their head on a swivel.

That's the thing though, we didnt HAVE to hire a new coach at that time. We simply could have appointed Kippy Brown as the interim coach for the 2010 season and then conduct a proper coaching search at the end of the season when better candidates would have been available. Instead, our administration panicked and grabbed the first meat byproduct that would say yes. They valued trying to save one recruiting class over getting the right coach. THAT is what set our multi year decline in motion. It came from piss poor leadership at the top.

ONLY because of the timing! No coach worth their salt was going to be interested in this job 2 weeks before signing day. That's why I said it wouldve been better to keep Kippy on as interim for the 2010 season and then conduct a proper coaching search/hire when the season was over. Who knows? Kippy may have earned the right to keep the job but if not, we wouldve stood a much better chance of getting a quality coach then instead of panicking and hiring Dooley because of his name!

And I would argue that is largely because we fired one of our own with a career record of 152-52 and a national championship under his belt. Many coaches saw that and said "hell, if that can't please them, nothing can".

Either way, it was disastrous timing no matter what occurred. In hindsight it would have been better to appoint Kippy as interim, but that's only because they selected Kiffin. Remember we could have had other guys back then other than Kiffin, namely Sumlin. Sumlin wouldn't have set the world on fire here, but we would have been much better off hiring him than Kiffin.

The architect of the downfall of Tennessee athletics, particularly football, is Mike Hamilton. Ultimately the people who hired Hamilton (admin) are to blame.

One problem with having someone already lined up when the firing takes place, is that you're likely to end up with someone like Shiano. You're putting way too much value onto the backs of the decision-makers.

Get your head out of the sand junior, Fulmer destroyed this program over years of neglect, its all on him if anybody, not some guy who was here for all of 13 months. Its amazing to me how blind some of you fanboys are.
