Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Coaches need to be careful sitting a player of Justine's caliber too much, if the ranking is true. These days the transfer portal can be your friend if other coaches come calling and tell her you can start for me, come on down. Different world now.

You said you are 100% behind Harper, then don't question her timeouts!! Now if you have finally realized we need a real coach, then perhaps your comments are good.
I post as a coach, not a fa
nMy allegiance is to the org, the players, the staff (in that order)

I compliment the coach and I critique the coach...both while backing them 100%
I question a coach when they don't abide by a standard practice used by coaches for decades

when I am not 100 behind Kellie,,,it will be very obvious, as I will lead the charge for her removal
I am not there!
But I do see "Holly" moments and will not sit by while it enters that dark realm

She fought the refs like hell last night, but she did not use the coaching weapons available to her IMO
It is my "opinion" (and yes, I know the old cliche is about opinions being like ...)

But it is NOT only my opinion, as proven by the opposing coach's use of this tactic to interrupt our short blasts

When I am not 100 behind Coach K,,,you will know
until then know the difference between
being against her and being critical of a tendency

100% agree with this,,,she is much more mobile than Darby and equal or better shooter.
Lack of PT is hurting her more than anything.
If she had been used more, she WOULD be used more!
Those saying Pisdit should have started from day 1 are just flat out living in a rantasy world totally detached from reality.

Someone may have already said this but it just seems like too many of our players are not in good shape. Getting beaten too often on fast breaks by a team that is only playing seven players.

Not sure if it’s out of shape or just lack of athleticism. We have two athletes and then we have everyone else in low gear

As far as I know, the posters here don't have access to the the team's practices. If Justine was showing in practice that she deserved more playing time, don't you think that CKJH would play her more ?
If JP was showing the capability to play as a starter, during practice, and the coach still refused to play her in games, that is reasonable cause for a review of her continued employment by the AD.

jackson mid range shots where not falling for her unconn where waiting for in the paint. where she was making some. tenn needs to draw some good three point plays for 3 shoters and to open the paint up. need 3 point shooting and paint points not just one.
First quarter was a disaster., After that, even during Uconn's ensuing runs, the LVs were getting a fair # of stops only to 1) miss a decent shot or 2) commit a TO. And in this game 1 was the real killer. If TOs would have allowed the LVs to make open shots, then by gawd she should have taken them. If they were going to continue 35%, then I am not sure anything would have helped.

We have two games where Rickea has been held more or less in check. Her mid range and that killer turn around have not been falling for (and she is taking less and less when it available), choosing to go in the lane where her tendencies are well scouted.

I thought Puckett might have broken out of her slump and she did hit a big three but missed open looks at key times.

Shooting more than anything has been this teams Achilles heel for the last two seasons.

That's where Kellie just needed to play her more against the likes of Vandy, TAMU, Florida, etc. Ashlyn Watkins was rated about the same coming out of HS, but is so much further along because Dawn will play her a lot of minutes against weaker opponents. Either Tennessee lets the game stay too close to gamble with reserves, or Kellie just gets fixated with a certain rotation instead of thinking about the future more.
But would Dawn do that if she had this very flawed roster?

I hope to see a starting 5 of Wynn, Horston, Jackson, Hollinshead, and Striplin. vs LSU. what could go wrong? lol

UT men"s basketball coach Don Devoe, once called a timeout during a game similar to last nights thumping from the Huskies. Devoe escorted one of his player away from the assembled team to the nail on his end of the court and pointed at the opposing team. "If you see anyone in their huddle you think you can guard, point them out to me, because we are getting killed with me guessing."

After the Huskies layup drill last night that was the first quarter, I expected Coach Harper to have that walk and talk with several of her players. Maybe she did as we held them to seven points in the second quarter. Unfortunately, they averaged 26 in the other three. CGA said that his team played so hard in the first quarter they were tired and their offensive efficiency suffered In the second quarter implying our defense had little effect. That might be true for the entire game. Not our best effort.

This isn't a "Free Emily" or "Free Kourtney" situation. Pissott is an All American and was ranked number 14. Other freshmen around the country are playing and some are doing very well. You don't recruit All Americans to sit on their azz all year. There is a reason she was an All American.

The only silver lining from last night is it was closer than it should have been. Out coached from the tip. Out manned by a short handed team. Lady Vols have fallen to mid tier level at best. Dont confuse the win streak against lesser teams as the Lady Vols being back. Long way to go. How many more losses like this against the top tier teams will it take for the fan base that keeps looking for the silver lining to understand our girls are not SEC too tier across the board like the SC, UCONN and Stanfords anymore.
Harper and husband just not getting the job done. Is this a repeat of the job that she did at NC State. Play like this on Monday night and Mulkey and LSU will have a field day. Can’t even do a basic thing like calling a time-out to try to interrupt the opponent’s rythem! Time to move on from the Kelly & Jon inept coaching job.

The only 2 higher rated recruits (including the number one rated recruit) that are taller than her are both averaging fewer minutes than Pissott.
Some of these recruits, especially tall ones, are highly ranked more for their potential than current skill/ability level and it is up to the coaching staff to develop that potential to the level of other players their size that have been playing college level for a couple years. There is a big difference in being the tallest player by at least a couple inches against lesser competition in high school and then playing college ball where there may be 3 or 4 players on the court about your height or taller with a lot more experience and maturity.
As always, JMO

I watched Justine's games for almost two years before she got her
She developed in every weakness of her game in that time, so I know she has the potential and ambition to do so

If Justine had played in as many games and had as much floor time as Darby,,,this wouldn't even be a conversation topic

She could take Darby's spot for at least 20 minutes a game they could rotate at that spot. No way she is not as good a player overall. She has the same three point shot. Time for her to play more.

I think all coaches including myself get a little tunnel vision at time.

If you watched the last time Justine hit the floor she was much more in a traditional butt down, defensive stance, which allows her to move better and she was also more aggressive and more variable in her offensive moves... I feel you have to reward Visible commitment and Response... That and there was almost no production from deep by the other shooters

Are you saying that CKJH, who is there every day at practice, is in error, on evaluating JP's ability to play effectively at this level right now ?

Look I'm a coach not a fan. I call it as I see it.. And what I see is a kid who can shoot from the logo to the arc, who is improved on defense, who is also improved on not being one dimensional.

Adversely I see a player who's starting who is getting burned consistently by smaller quicker guards,, who doesn't have the wingspan of Justine and Hasn't displayed as much improvement as I would like to see.
