Keller Chryst Signing to be announced in the morning per

Dobbs ran to survive. I’ll take Chryst. I think when he starts will see a vast difference imo. I feel there is a difference in being a true drop back passer and just a fast qb who drops back because of play call. That’s just how I’ve always seen it at least.

No, Dobbs, was an ELITE running qb, ran to gain yards and score touchdowns......it was the strength of his game as a quarterback, which is the point here. The scouting services said he was a prostyle qb, he wasn’t. Same with JG....they said he was a top dual threat qb coming out of high school, but last year showed us they were wrong, he’s not....he’s clearly a prostyle qb who wants to and is better suited to played from the pocket. JG is clearly a prostyle qb who can run but wants to make plays throwing the ball from the pocket with his very talented arm.

As far as Chryst, I’ll take him too if the coaches determine he’s our best qb and give us the best chance to win. But I don’t that’ll prove to be the case as most everybody I’ve heard speak about this sees him as battling McBride to be JG’s backup....which should he pretty easy to do given that McBride isn’t very good.

Good grief. Pretty much every quarterback who’s ever played college football was at one time a “backup” and, prior to getting experience and growing into the position were “serviceable”. In 1994, the guy who is now considered to be the greatest QB in Tennessee and perhaps SEC history, was both at first a backup and serviceable.

As far as Chryst is concerned, in limited time/starts at Stanford, he threw for 19 touchdowns vs 6 interceptions.....in what world does that “suck”?

Well what does it say for him if he's projected to be a backup as a 5th yr guy?

I'm giving you my eye test. I watch more than SEC football. If he plays for the Vols this Fall, you heard it here first...

I don’t know that he’s “projected” to do anything. People are just giving their opinions and most everybody I’ve heard has said they think he’s being brought in to compete for the starting job but that he’ll likely wind up backing up a younger, more physically talented JG.

And I’d hazard a guess that most all of us watch more than just SEC football and have seen Keller play. I saw him a couple of times and thought he looked pretty good for Stanford.

Guess we’ll see how it shakes out. Either way it’s a good thing for Tennessee that he’s gonna be on the roster.

I think he knows he has a good shot at this year and a better path in coaching than in the pros. He will compete and provide exemplary behavior on and off the field.

Don't know if Palo Alto high school culture did him any leadership favors.

Let's see if JJ will catch his passes.

I have no problem with bringing him in but seriously, as I watched Stanford games last yr I thought "I do not want this guy to be my QB."

I'd say his ceiling is former NC State guy Mike Glennon

I hope JG steps it up and wins the job. In the college game you need a guy who can run.

I think JG will be our starting qb this year, have little doubt that. He’s tough, has good leadership skills, has a big, accurate arm. Just needs to be coached up on pocket awareness and reading his progressions imo. We should remember that he was being coached by Mike Canales last year, a former Utah State running backs coach.

You are the anti-Chryst.

Lol. Good one. No snark.

But for real. I think its a great signing. I think we need him.

I just think that from the reports coming out, past performance, and the fact he won't be here until June makes the chances of him starting very small. He will get a shot though.

Anyone thinking he is an automatic starter or an upgrade from JG is living in lala land.

Coached RB’s one season. Long career as QB’s coach and OC. He didn’t do a good job at Tennessee.

JG needs to work on his pre snap read of the defense when he can do that he has a shot at making plays.

For the record, I have no idea who will be the starter but I would put my money on whoever Pruitt decides gets the job this Fall.

Things must be looking up in Sunnyvale. Put half your money on Chryst and the rest on JG and you can't go wrong. Myself I'm betting heavily on Pruitt in the 5-year marathon.

Let’s be honest here Butchna. Mike Canales was our “QB coach” last year for one reason and one reason only....he was Lyle’s good buddy and Jones wanted to do him a solid...just like he did when he tried to not show Canales up when we played North Texas when Mike was their interim head coach.

Nothing in Canales’ resume suggested he should have been an SEC QB coach, especially considering the job he held just before coming to Knoxville (Utah State’s RB coach) which was the bigger point here. It was a bad, good ol’ boy hire and it did nothing whatsoever to help JG develop as a D1 qb. Recall that he spent 2 seasons at NCState at Philip Rivers’ QB coach....the worst 2 seasons of Rivers’ career. His career didn’t progress into better jobs....it looks like a bell-shaped curve where he was trending down due to previous lack of success, and then along comes Sgt Carter who snatched him up....we saw the results.

I’m hopeful that Helton, who I hope is a legit QB coach can get him where he needs to be. Canales clearly couldn’t.

Only argument I have is calling him a RB’s coach. Let’s keep it straight. :hi:

Fits as well as anything else. Sure as hell cant coach QBs and that’s what he was when Sgt Carter offered him the job.

Haha, not a chance. I believe he’ll be your starter come September.

That's comical. JG will not start over Chryst, unless an injury happens. The only thing JG proved last season was that he was not ready to be a starting caliber QB in this league. Chryst was a starter, with good numbers, in a power 5 conference. He lost the job to injury. Also, There is no way a guy like Chryst chooses UT to come and sit the bench. He's looking to start and gain interest for next years draft, if he can play well. Chryst will be the starter until he gets hurt or just sucks that bad.

Hide and watch chief. Hide and watch.

As far as Chryst is concerned, of course he’s coming to compete for the starting job, no one is saying otherwise...... and if he can win it, more power to him and our program. But he wasn’t promised anything, only the chance to compete.....and everybody I’ve heard discuss it who covers the program has said they think he’ll essentially be battling McBride to be JG’s backup at the end of the day....and I obviously think they’re right. We’ll see

I’m not wanting to argue or say your lying KB. We’ve had great discussions but I don’t trust anyone around the program. They’ve all essentially said Keller wasn’t coming here or no interest and now he’s here. They got the staff wrong several times as well. All I know is that he coming here isn’t bad at all. It’s actaully a win win for the team. He will either Start and do very well here or at the very least provide quality depth. We are very beneficial of another P5 player coming in and pushing other players.

We completely agree then. It’s a great thing he’s coming to Tennessee to bolster and provide depth to the QB room. Our QBs will be better for the competition with an older, experienced guy like him in the mix. And I f he wins the job then great.

I’m just saying that Ainge, Swain, Hubbs and others have all said they believe he’ll compete for the job which is a great thing.....but that he’ll end up battling WM for the backup spot behind JG when it’s all said and done.

And thanks for not calling me a liar, although I’m not sure why you were considering it in the first place.
