This is not a criminal trial. This is not a civil trial. The Senate is simply assessing his fitness for the SCOTUS. He has no right to that position. If a majority comes to believe he's lying or otherwise should not be approved, what's wrong with that?

I have a hard time seeing a person's career derailed over accusations that can't be proven to be true or false. It's possible an innocent man gets punished because some choose to believe him guilty. Yes, it's also possible he's guilty, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. If this is the only skeleton to pop out of his closet and serves as the one reason he is not confirmed, it's a gross miscarriage of the system.

It also sets a precedent to dismiss any nomination on the grounds of unfounded accusations.

Kavanaugh has no legal entitlement to a SCOTUS seat. He's basically going through a glorified job interview. There will be no finding of facts or determinations of law. He will simply be given an up or down vote. The senate can vote for or against him based on his tie color. Stop acting like the man's on trial. He's not.

Yeah, unfortunately in this day and age, you don't need proof to ruin someone's life. You don't even need truth. Just throw an accusation out there, spread it through the media, let it gain traction, and your job is done. Doesn't matter if it can't be proved or if it's eventually outright disproved.
