Kamara is the scarier of our star running backs

Not since "Cobb - Webb" have I been this excited for a UT backfield. "Stewart - Hayden" was close.

They ran a series against Vandy where they faked the zone read then tossed the ball to Kamara in the flat. Then came back a few plays later and the same look only Dobbs faked the pass to Kamara and threw it over the head of the Vandy corner who had come up to tackle Kamara. I'm thinking it was to PW for the TD before the safety could get over to help. Really cool "quadruple" option series.

It was Von P that caught that td. Was a good play design by debo. DB bit so hard he blew up Kamara!

Hopefully I don't get too much hate for this. While I definitely think Kamara is much more quick in space, I'm not sold that he's a home run threat. Let me finish! The two long break-aways he had last year were against Bowling Green and UK. He got ran down in both scenarios, barely making it into the endzone against BG and getting tackled at the 1 by UK. I'm hoping he's been working on his speed as much as Hurd has been this off season. Let me reiterate lol I think he's an amazing RB and a nice guy (met him on Saturday night and I was so freakin star struck) and wouldn't trade him for the world.

I fully understand your perspective and have noted, like many others, the same two plays. I haven't researched the opposing players but, I would guess that those were DB's who tracked him down. In a foot race, I would imagine than most 190lb D/CB's would beat most 215lb+ RB's. Like you alluded to, it's Kamara's cut, turn and burn, that makes him the threat. There are a select few RB's over the years who were the fastest man on the field. Look at the NFL combine top 20. Most are CB and WR's. There are a few RB's but, those are quite rare.

I asked a Gator fan at work and he said Hurd by a long shot. He recalled last year in the swamp that even when they got on him in the backfield he would drag guys for at least 3 yards.

Well yeah. Hurd got 28 carries vs Florida last year, Kamara only 5. Jalen had some tough, hard-nosed, very impressive runs. Alvin didn't get a chance.

Just glad they are BOTH on our side and we don't have to choose between the two !

I was thinking about how when Kamara was a freshman at Alabama, he came in the same year as Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake was already there. That's 3 "top 50" running backs out of high school, and from what I understand, when Kamara had to spend a few hours in jail for not having a license, that basically gave Saban an out to force Kamara off the team. Getting to my point, I think it's really impressive that Butch presented an opportunity to Alvin at Tennessee, to come on to a team that already had a former top 40 overall player in Jalen Hurd. Even though he had been in that situation before at Bama being surrounded by potentially better talent, it's a credit to Butch for getting Alvin to trust him and then delivering on the sale of making Alvin a successful RB. One more reason why I'm not worried about recruiting for 2017, Butch definitely has a way players and getting them to have confidence in what they're doing over on the Hill.

I agree, Hurd is more physical and harder on the defenses he runs against as a whole, but if you let Kamara get loose he can take it to the house every time he touches the ball. This is probably why opposing coaches are scared of him, the big play ability as stated by many previous posters. GBO!!

If we can get a downfield passing attack it will open the field up much more for both of our backs.

Obviously we have the best of both worlds with our 2 starting RB's.

Then you add in all that Dobbs can do running and it becomes a nightmare for any D to try to stop.

Last season our running game was the best it's been in decades.

This season I honestly believe our O is going to become even more dangerous and harder to stop.

Reasons why?

1...buTch now trusts DeBord much more so DeBord will be allowed to expand our game playbook even more and bring more things into each game plan.

2...We saw a small sample size of different things in the last Bowl game and they worked well in a real game against a top 15 team so DeBord will be given more opportunities to be more creative.

3...Our new TE coach is very experienced, respected and knowledgeable so buTch will let him and DeBord WILL be getting our TE's more involved in our passing game and I believe that's the main reason that Croom was finally moved to the TE position because he can make plays and we'll want a TE in on every play that can move and catch the ball, watch our TE's catching lots more balls this season.

4...As long as they can avoid injuries our TE's catching more balls will seriously open things up more for our WR's and as long as they can stay healthy we have some great WR's and we ARE going to see them making lots more big plays because our TE's are going to be making lots more big passing plays and force more coverage on our TE's and then Dobbs and our WR's are going to cash in on that.

This WILL be the year that we finally see our passing game stats go way up because both our TE's and WR's will become very serious threats and we'll just have too much for the D to try to cover well.

All our O coaches must be drooling at all the experienced and talent depth we have for them to design plays for.

Also our O line is finally coming together and when we find the right guy for Left Tackle we'll run at will and Dobbs will get more time to set his feet and throw better balls.

It will all work for us to control the ball while moving it, control the clock so our D gets more rest and can make adjustments and SCORE!

Also I believe that buTch and our coaches have learned that to play with the big boys you absolutely NEVER take your foot off the gas and keep playing to score every time we have the ball no matter how big a lead we may have.

Also do NOT be surprised to see Dobbs make a big running play and then head to the sidelines to take a play or 2 off to get a breather while a backup QB comes in to add another spark to our O and to get our other QB's more experience to be more ready for next season.

I expect buTch and DeBord to be thinking ahead to next season when Dobbs is gone and to have specific plays ready to go for our other QB's to run while Dobbs gets a breather.

Team 120 is going to do some things as the season rolls along that even us die hard fans don't expect.

WIN by WIN our Vols will earn their respect as they work towards a Championship...VFL...GBO!!!

Hurd. Kamara is scarier on a single play. Hurd will break your spirit over 60 minutes

Kinda this. Define "scarier". If you mean on any given pitch/handoff then Kamara certainly seems to have the most potential to really gash a defense. If you mean the ability to continue to gain yards on most any play and keep the chains moving Hurd seems pretty vetted.

Hurd > AK

AK couldn't take the abuse the Hurd does with 25+ carries. not a knock on AK... it is just what it is. Hurd is a beast.

I think people sometimes underestimate Kamara simply because Hurd is so big...Kamara is listed at 5'10"/215lb. That's no little "scat back".

I'm going with Hurd. Hurd ran very well against the tougher opponents last yr. I love both though, and they compliment each other well.

Yes. And for those who would say Kamara got all his yards vs lesser competition.....he averaged more yards per carry vs the best teams we played as well.

Hurd averaged more yds per carry against Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama and Northwestern. They were also basically the same against Arkansas.

I love watching Hurd run. When he runs with passion he's difficult to bring down. Kamara is probably the scarier of the two in the sense that he has more big play ability (in my opinion).

Hurd has been brilliant with the ball turning 1-2 yard gains in to 6 or 7. But what he needs to work on is breakaway speed and breaking the easy arm tackles.

Kamara, of course is our big play threat but he needs to be more reliable between the tackles. If he would put up college CJ Spiller numbers that'd be awesome.

If I'm a defender and it's either Kamara or Hurd in front of me 1 on 1, who is scarier? Kamara will juke and leave me standing in front of a stadium full of people on his way to 7 points. Hurd either runs over or stiff arms me making me look like a littte beyotch on his way to 7. Hurd would be scarier to me as he would make me more embarrassed than Kamara. With Kamara I have a jock burn after being faked out of it, with Hurd the possibility of ending up in traction is high.

Maybe Kamara on the potential for a quick strike but if I'm a defender having to stare down Kamara or Hurd, I would much rather be juked than nuked.

Speaking of kickoffs, if those coaches keep kicking to Evan Berry, they won't have to worry about anyone on our offense very much.

To be perfectly honest I'm hoping our defense actually lessens Berry's opportunities dramatically.

He's still welcome to keep the production up with the chances he's afforded though.
