Kaiden Salter annointed as next Deshaun Watson

You guys really think Dilfer's going to give an interview and be like "yeah, I dunno, he kind of throws like my sister and is really innaccurate with the ball. I'd comp him to Helen Keller in terms of vision and accuracy."

When comparing him to Deshaun Watson (and same for the JG comp to Newton) he's basically saying "the kid is dual threat quarterback."
Pretty sure it’s “duel” threat around these parts.

I hope Salter turns out to be good. I don’t expect him to be anything like Watson. And stuff like this is ridiculous to put on a kid coming out of HS.
I hope he’s as good as Trent Dilfer ......I’ll take that

In terms of physical tools, he was right. Didn't say he had what was needed between the ears. 😁
No, he wasn’t. Guarantano did not have speed OR power. He was just as slow mentally as he was physically. He was the all time worst starting qb in Tennessee history.

JG was broken mentally playing behind those awful lines in 2017-18. It could have happened to alot of guys. He isn't some p---y though, 99% of the guys on here who are so critical of him couldn't take the beating he took and go back out there.

You are right but rest of us 99.99% do not have 103k cheering their lungs out when we do our jobs. We dont have millions sitting at home on their day offs eagerly waiting for us to watch us do our tasks. We dont get our names on Jerseys, streets named after us etc.
If you want all of that, you gotta take the flip side too.

This is Difler on Guarantano:

Trent Dilfer, head of the Elite 11 and former NFL quarterback, during Guarantano’s recruitment.
“He’s almost too talented,” Dilfer said, via FOX Sports. “Essentially, Guarantano can make every throw in the book — and do so with unmatched speed and power… He’s got everything you could ever want.”

Unmatched speed and power ? Everything you could ever want !!

Renowned QB guru reportedly views Tennessee’s Jarrett Guarantano as the SEC prototype under center

Other QB guru comapred him to Cam Newton !!

so take it with a grain of salt :)
Guarantano was great in a camp situations, he just never could process information fast enough to be a good gameday qb.

It would seem that Dilfer was commenting on JG's ability to make throws and his athleticism. Neither of those things seemed to be the issue with him on gamedays...it was his complete lack of decision-making skills and inability to process things at the speed of SEC-caliber live action. (Hence his "fantastic" practices year after year.)
Yup, JG had it all physically except between the ears. He always seemed to be one second behind everyone else on the field.

QB guru Trent Dilfer has just made the statement that incoming vol freshman QB compares closely and could become the next Deshaun Watson! We are about to enter a return to glory these next few years. This is great news to hear, and especially now that he will be playing in a pass happy explosive CJH offense!
I saw the article too, as did many others no doubt, but did the kid really need a thread about it here, and the added pressure to meet those lofty expectations? Especially b4 he even takes his first practice snap. Good Lord, people really need to think b4 starting threads, posting sometimes. Hope a mod deletes the thread.

You obviously didn't see the throws he managed to get right. JG had a lot of zip (power) on his passes, but he couldn't throttle it on the short and medium routes. He also could make every throw required of a QB but stared down receivers on sideline routes and too often threw jump balls down the field. Had the physical gifts.

Well I’ve heard the wind blow before. I’ll wait to see him play.
Yep. This fan base is so desperate for something, anything good to happen that will spark our return to glory that they see greatness in every qb recruit. We were convinced JG was the second coming as well. He was going to light up the SEC. It's a huge jump from HS to the SEC. Some adapt and excel. Some don't. Like you I'll wait to see him with the pads on at this level.

Having said that, you get a kid like Horn who has played at the highest levels of HS football in GA and you've got a guy who is already swimming in some deep waters. The "step up" wouldn't be as drastic for a guy like that. I can't remember who the LB prospect was but he was a 5 star kid everyone wanted but he played in a little fishbowl somewhere. He was always the biggest and fastest cat on the field. He was a man among little boys in HS. He got to UT and never did a damned thing. Seem to recall his ability to retain info and schemes were a part of his problems, but the bottom line is that he never could make the step up to play at the major college level. There's a lot to be said for kids who play big time HS football when putting together their recruiting profile.

I don't know much about Simpson's level in TN HS football, but I'm very familiar with the Grayson, Buford, Parkview, etc levels in GA football. That's some high level competition right there. Give me either one and I'll be happy but probably for different reasons. Guess Heupel of all people will know QB talent when he sees it and he'll certainly know who has the moxy to play the position in a league like this.

To be fair, JG’s faults in his game weren’t due to his arm, they were between the ears

Those quotes on Guarantano by Dilfer should immediately get him disqualified for anything qb related.

Will Tennessee go undefeated with Salter at the switch?
Odds?

He wasn't lying. JG can make every throw in the book, as long as the game speed is 'Bergen Catholic', he just can't make them at Division I speed.

I wouldn't even say he could make "every throw in the book" if we're honest. Anyone remember how all of his screen passes were backwards, and behind the RB, and zipped in at 86mph. He had little to no touch on his passes. We hardly ever threw between the hashmarks due to JG's limitations.

Again, he tried his best, and took a lot of hits... I do wish him well. Disagree with Dilfer on the "all the throws" statement, though.

He has no timing in the pocket in college ball, and overcompensates by trying to break space-time and get the ball to the receiver in the past by throwing the ball harder. He was fine at high school speed, he just couldn't adapt to college.
