Kahlil declares for draft

I would guess he has all the elements required and, with a year on the bench to heal, develop and learn, he will rise to the occasion. As opposed to learning new schemes from new coaches in college, he can do that in the NFL with a big check in his pocket. Makes sense to me. Go Vols!

To me, him and Gaulden are guys, both with potential to elevate draft stock w/ big SR year being coached up, but also inconsistent enough to end up riding the pine, so it probably makes sense to bolt for minimum salary and very late draft choice or undrafted free agent.

This is a surprise. Does anyone else find it odd that our "New" coach in his short tenure has managed to lure some great recruits yet unable to keep the current roster? Seems odd to me, maybe he's encouraging them...wants to start with a clean slate.

Do we get to recruit more players this year if more declare for the draft? Does more roster spots equal more recruit slots, or is there a class limit regardless?

this move makes easier sell to guys like Coynis Miller to come in and play from Day 1...and probably be more effective. I think we'll pull in at least one more DT, DE, LB and DB, and looks like most of the one's we're tracking are 4-5*'s or high 3's w/ big offer sheets.

Not that I saw. And I watched the defensive line frequently.

KMac always stood his ground against the run. And on passing downs got some decent pass rush up the middle on bull rushes.

KMac will be drafted higher than you guys think.

5-6th round mainly because his bench press numbers will be through the roof.

WOW. You guys seriously know nothing about the game.

Kahlil's job is not to make splash plays. His job because of his body type is to be the guy that takes on double teams so other guys can make splash plays. Those plays you're talking about that Shy Tuttle made that were so impressive happened because Kahlil was the guy the center was doubling and Shy was able to match up one on one against the guard and beat him with his quickness.

Shy played the 3-technique while Kahlil played the 1-technique. The 1-technique in the 4-3 defense lines up in between the center and guard. His job is to take them both on. Taking on this double team allows other defensive lineman to match up one on one. That is what Kahlil did most of his career here at Tennessee. He was the 1-technique taking on double teams.

The 3-technique, on the other hand, lines up between the guard and tackle. Because the 1-technique is taking on two players, this allows the 3-technique to use his quickness to shoot the gap inbetween the guard and tackle to make plays in the backfield. Its usually the 3-technique defensive tackle that gets lots of sacks and tackles for loss.

Here is a link explaining this more: Defensive Line Techniques - The Prototypes | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

Everyone in this thread criticizing Kahlil should read it.

This assumes that the center and guard just block straight ahead every play like a middle school team without any zone scheme or pulling guards. He wasn't doubled every single play, not even close.

While I would never have advised this the NFL will see his size, strength, and quickness and probably draft him in the 4-5th round. He’s been around that stuff all his life so he’ll probably be prepared....

You guys are so freaking disrespectful. Blame Butch Jones for the fact this football team didn't live up to expectations. Stop taking your anger for the lousy season out on the players. Kahlil McKenzie has been a great player for Tennessee the last 3 years. He showed tremendous work ethic. This statement here is just disrespectful. I get it when it comes to someone like Jalen Hurd who quits on the team. But Kahlil never quit on this team. He simply moved on to the next level because he feels he has the talent to play in the NFL.

In a year or two when Kahlil is a solid starter in the NFL, those of you in this thread ripping him will live to regret it.

You need to read much more carefully. No where in my post did I blame Butch, Hell, I did not even mention Butch. Nor did I mention anything about expectations or show anger over a lousy season. Also, I did not say McKenzie quit, or that he had no work ethic.....you assumed I was saying McKenzie had a lack of work ethic when in fact McKenzie has no devotion to the program or the team since he now has chosen to devote himself to the NFL, not UT.....just because lack of work ethic was written first does not mean it will apply to all that will leave the program as you immediately assumed. I said if he was going to work his ass off, he was going to get paid for working his ass off.

And I do believe he will be drafted if for no other reason than his size and the space he takes up.

In the future, when responding, you need to control your emotions as it causes your reading to be impaired as well as frantic thoughts that go above and beyond items/issues mentioned in a post.

Once upon a time D4H was on my IGNORE, but I brought him back for entertainment value. Worst VOL season ever needed some laughs. :eek:lol:

Just another fart in the wind... Here and then gone

Our previous Coach, this seems to be the trend.

Probably downplayed their ability to move to the next level and was his way of keeping them in check.

Keep them around. Reset button is working for new coach as far as the damage control of the previous coach.

We don't need players hanging around questioning the woulda, coulda, or shoulda for a year thinking ahead and not giving a solid effort.

All the physical tools in the world so someone will pick him and think they can make the light go on for him, and maybe they will, it certainly never came on while he was at Tennessee though. I actually focused on watching him in several games this year, and he would routinely get stood up and pushed back a yard or two on every running play. Rarely gets penetration and doesn't hold up at the point of attack like someone that size should be able to do. My own dime store psychologist opinion is that he plays like a rich kid who came from comfort and was able to dominate in high school because of his incredible physical gifts, but never had that edge to him that good defensive linemen need. I also can't help but think he didn't want to pay the price that Pruitt and Fitzgerald are going to ask of him for the next year in the S&C program.

Jerry Glanville said two years ago they should move him to guard, because that suits his personality better (maybe it's in the genes?), who knows if that would work but it might be worth a shot. Offensive linemen as a group tend to be more cerebral and that may fit his strengths better. They just don't make guys that big who have his quickness, so I think he'll probably test pretty well at the combine, but whether it ever translates to the field remains to be seen.

C'mon. Lets be real. McKenzie had virtually zero impact...ever. For a 5 star recruit he was a huge disappointment. Maybe staff is to blame somewhat...but he was average at best....with almost no impact. Never stood out in a game...ever.

Thought he was going to Glenn Dorsey but turned out to be Glenn Beck

Per Rotoworld...

Tennessee junior DT Kahlil McKenzie announced he will enter the 2018 NFL Draft.

A few Vol beat writers were surprised, believing McKenzie was possibly in line for a jump in play in a new system and under new coaches. And if the name rings a bell, yes, McKenzie is the son of Raiders front office executive Reggie McKenzie, who is slightly changing his role this offseason. Kahlil McKenzie is massive and played 51 percent of snaps in games he saw action in this season. The defensive tackle also has a torn pec in his injury history.

My opinion - He may become a serviceable 2 down NT in the NFL but hasn't shown enough yet to be a 3 down NT...

I wish the guy all the best. He was one of a few players that I thought would have the opportunity to have improved significantly under the new staff.

That said, I am not that upset about it. It's one more spot open for a CJP guy to to come in.

PFT regularly graded McKenzie as one of the most efficient DT's among SEC lineman.

D4H is right, in this instance. Khalil really hasn't been the weakness on D, and has graded well, or at least better than the rest of the bozos. McKenzie is also a good kid- the kind you want on your team.

I always thought he was in the wrong position. I was hoping he would move opposite Trey Smith and our offense would get a huge boost. Wish him the best. VFL...GBO!
