Yes, it's an obvious play on words, so you already get where this one is going...
I'll spare you the TL;DR page and a half of raw stats that talk about overall record; record -vs- Top 25 and Top 10 teams; YPC; late throws, overthrows; underthrows; and just plain bad throws; etc. If you want to read it for yourself, it's not all that hard to find. It's easy to parse stats to find numbers you like, so look at them all. That's when the real picture emerges.
JG is one tough character. Physically. Mentally, he's as fragile as an internet Karen. Once you're inside his head, you own him. Plain and simple.
When you're up against a top-tier defense, you are not going to be able to enforce your will. Depending on what your bread & butter is, sometimes you have to pass to open up the run, and sometimes you have to run to open up the pass. Against UGA, it was a given that they would load the box, and make JG beat them through the air.
It took awhile, but it was a perfect strategy. By the 4th Quarter, the defense was gassed, and JG was mentally curled up in the fetal position. This isn't the first time our opponent has dialed up the same strategy, and it worked to near-perfection. UGA gave us 7 points; JG threw 2 really nice TD passes; and then he gave the UGA defense enough points to overcome the 21 points we got between their gift and his good throws. It's a numbers game, and UGA played it wisely.
Right about here is where the JG apologists always show up sounding like an old Johnson 2-stroke outboard: "But but but but but but..."
Okay...fair enough. Name me the SEC team that would gladly swap their QB for JG. I'll hang up and listen.....
You can blame this one on Chaney, the OL, Pruitt, the officials, COVID-19, or Toyota gas pedals. Whatever makes you feel better. But the bottom line is that once UGA figured out JG, the game was effectively over. Again, we've seen this strategy play out to our opponents advantage before. Many times over.
JG is not going to take UT to the next level. But I wouldn't replace him, just yet...
UT should be able to beat UK despite JG, and we're not going to beat Bama with anybody we've got at QB, so use these next weeks to shore up JG as best you can, and quietly start figuring out who your best QB is. After the Bama game, make the switch. It's not like UT is going to win the SEC this year anyway, so use the rest of this season to get the next QB some valuable playing time, and start next year with one or two QB's who already have some SEC experience under their belt.
Sometimes, you just have to take your lumps and move on. Such is the case with UT Football and Jarrett Guarantano. The only way he gets to the NFL is if Cleveland decides to make drafting Johnny Manziel the second-stupidest thing they've ever done. As for UT, if he comes back next year and touches anything other than a clipboard, then Pruitt and Chaney need to be shown the door. I don't care what your resume' is...if you can't field a serviceable SEC QB in 4 (or 3) years, you're out of your league.
Good enough is no longer good enough. This is a much better team than it was when Pruitt was hired. It lacks only that one essential cog to make the machine run smoothly. JG is not that cog. We are at the point where we need an SEC-caliber QB, and JG is not that QB. He never was, and he never will be. As I am so fond of saying when confronted with the obvious, it is what it is.
Go Vols.
