Justin Wilcox

Personally I dont think we could have gotten a better defensive coach than we did. Many different sources called Wilcox the next up and coming coach and I am glad we grabbed him when we did. Our defense will be fine just let them get the players they need that fit their schemes. go vols:loco:

Will someone teach our defense how to wrap up on a tackle? The whole hit hard and hope you knock him down and make ESPN highlights is getting old.

^This. I am so tired of seeing a guy that could be stopped for a gain of a couple yards, busting a twenty yarder. Some of these guys might as well cut off their arms , because they don't use them. As much as I love him, JJ is a big offender of this problem.

I think our lack of QB pressure has a lot to do with the shortcomings of our defense. Wilcox's defensive schemes rest on getting pressure on the QB--blitzing, stunting, surprise/delayed blitzes--things that we lack the raw athletic ability to do both effectively and consistently right now, especially on the defensive tackle and end positions. A lack of overall linebacker speed doesnt help either, or having so-so corners.

I will never get over the defensive scheme Chavis used in the second half of the UCLA game in 2008. Knowing they were throwing short passes and keeping the secondary 10 yds off the receivers for two straight quarters was about as frustrated as I have ever been while watching a football game.

wasn't the kentucky jelly team averaging 30 points or something....and Wicox holds them to 14 on a day when they come in KNOWING this will be their year to break the streak.....this thread = yawn.

Adjustments to Cobb being open? We had out best two cover DB's (Waggner and Jackson) lined up on him in man-to-man coverage all game. They were getting beat on routes by an NFL WR. Do you think Wilcox should have gone down there and cover Cobb himself? We held them to their lowest point total all season and that is evidence that our DC did not do well. Solid evaluation. Keep those gems coming.

To go along with this, you keep Cobb to what, 8 and a half yards a catch, you're doing a hell of a job on him.

Watching him make a catch and then get immediately tackled is a whole lot better than watching DJ Hall run uncovered down the field.

I think a lot of people are missing this point....this is the biggest problem we face as a Defense. Are we teaching them to tackle without wrapping up? It seems every one of the Defensive Backs are tackling that way on every play. If we don't start teaching them to wrap the hell up when they tackle instead of trying to get on Highlight reels, we will be in trouble.

Not completely sold on Wilcox as of yet.....He is in his first year,...with players that aren't his...I am willing to give him more time and not call for his head!

Well....flame me if you want (I really dont care) but after watching our defense yesterday (which did in the end show up)...I seriously started questioning Wilcox's ability to coach defense in the SEC....the passes to Cobb over the middle were there every time and UK moved the ball most series with ease...as other teams have done this season...

Now we did get stops and the ball fell toward the Tennessee River which helped...but several games this season defense wise I really started wondering if he is capable of coaching defense in the fast paced SEC....

I almost think Chavis was a bit better and more suited to the SEC style of play...thoughts?

People who didnt love Chavis are complete idiots. There are not to many DC out there better then Chavis in country. There were years we had nothing on D and he still had a good defensive rankings. CHAVIS MAKES ME GO LOCO :loco:

I was absolutely ready for the ENTIRE Fulmer coaching staff to go...for obvious reasons....For the Chavis haters....LSU was in the TOP 10 all season and still are....but the 3rd and Chavis was getting old...

What are you smoking people? Chavis was horrible and I worried every third down. The Pony Package was horrible and if it was 3rd and 15, he'd play off the WR's so much. " By gosh, it's 3rd and 15 and we're gonna let them get those 14 yards, but by golly, we're gonna make em earn that 1."-Chavis. Yeah and then they'd get an easy touchdown. I like Wilcox alot and I think once he can get really good recruits, he can run this defense.

Chavis is good but he's gone. I like Wilcox. The last 4 games we gave up no more than 14 points. I realize we were playing the easiest part of our schedule but KY was averaging 33 and Ole Miss 30 so it appears to me we are coming around.

I'm quite happy with CJW and once he gets the talent level back up, I think we'll find hm to be a definite keeper

I actually thought UK would put up a lot of points. They are capable of running and passing. The two teams we shut down prior were 1 dimensional. I'm impressed he was able to hold them to 14 points.

Count me in this camp. I thought the defense was excellent Saturday given the circumstances.

LSU was in the TOP 10 all season and still are

He's also got the best CB in the nation, one of the best LBs and a very very good D line.

Chavis was never able to adjust his D to its strengths or mask a weakness at all.

A blind monkey could have that LSU D in the top 20 in the country.

Look at his game plan against Auburn or Arkansas.

Well...Love him or hate him...Les Miles (Coming off a NC no less) ran out and scooped Chavis up QUICK....I dont think it was all Chavis's fault at UT...more of the ENTIRE staff that had been in place...including the system or what ever you want to call it....for Les Miles to jump at Chavis out to tell you something....Chavis had ALOT of good seasons here...but all good things come to an end....was time to re-stock the shelves for sure..

Seriously though...for YEARS Chavis held his own...we were top 10 material during the 90's and early 2000's...they simply couldnt beat UF and we would lose a game we were supposed to win...that was UT football for a while ...when recruiting falls off...(Fulmers fault)...then the defense suffers...look at us now...

really? Les Miles' decision making as a supporting point?

Point being...#1...Les Miles CURRENTLY has a #10 ranked team, most of this season were ranked higher...

#2 Les Miles jumped all over Chavis...I dont know of a coach who had just won a NC that would grab John Chavis if there wasnt something worth while there...

#3 I get your point about Miles decision making....however see point #1

You use Les Miles' decision making as justification? Seriously?

Chavis isn't bad if he's facing a one dimensional offense. If a team can both run and pass effectively, look out it's going to get ugly. He had a terrible habit of playing down to the competition.

One reason recruiting fell off is that Chavis wouldn't get off his ass and leave Knoxville.
