Justin Wilcox (merged)

I haven't seen a damn thing from Wilcox's defense, that has impressed me thus far. We literally looked like a bunch chickens with our heads cut off. Our defense looked as if that didn't have clue in the world, and UAB's offense wasn't even that complex. This has to be the most pathetic win in UT football history. Im still disgusted from watching this game.

Sounds like you need to stop talking about it if it disgusts you then. When you have small and slow LBs, and when they blitz and cannot get pressure on a QB, then a secondary with a guy that was just converted from WR 2 months ago, Art Evans, and a very inconsistent Eric Gordon will not survive on an island especially knowing either Waggoner or Wolf is playing one of the safety positions. The DL is not going to bring pressure, and when you try to bring pressure with a blitz and cannot get pressure then everything is going to be bad.

There's no room for excuses. Other than losing Eric Berry and Dan Williams, which were dominant forces I know, this is practically the same defense we had last year. Wilcox just isn't that good, im sorry.

Minus Dan Williams Eric berry Dennis rogan Wes brown and Ben Martin. All were good players

Agreed, Berry and Williams just came off of the top of my head. Im just saying that Wilcox isn't cut out to be our DC, he's just not getting it done.

Umm, would you like to rephrase all who we lost last year? 1. Berry 2. Williams 3. McCoy 4. Rogan 5. Wes Brown

No,this is not practically the same defense we had last year considering Berry's replacement is Waggoner and Wolfe (a walk-on), Williams replacement is a mix between a freshman (Miller), a guy that was playing OL up until a month and a half ago (Thomas), and a DE (Williams). Rogan's replacement is Art Evans. Wes Brown's replacement: see D. Williams' replacement.

So yea, keep thinking this is "practically the same defense." It might make your delusion that much more delusional.

We had same LB's as last year and Monte had the defense looking better with those same slow LB's as last year!!! Just saying!!!

there is a difference between getting your butt kicked against Oregon, having no pass rush on Florida, and watching UAB rack up 400 yards passing against us. I can't believe how many wide open receivers there were. It was almost embarrassing. Were there a couple times a DB could have made a play? Yes. But how many times did UAB having a guy uncovered on a drag across the middle? Wilcox was just outcoached badly today.

By the way, we got some pressure on the QB at times, but we have to finish sacks. We aren't doing a good job of finishing off the play.

Keep sipping the Justin Wilcox koolaid and it might make your delusion that much more delusional. Agreed, that we lost some key players, but there's no excuse for this kind of performance defensively not matter where our talent level is.

I'm not blaming any of the coaches at this point since we have no depth. It's hard for the DT's to be getting pressure on the QB when your legs are gone and there is no one else to come in for you.

What exactly is our defensive scheme this year? To me, it looks like we just lay back with LB's and DE's covering Speedy Wr's and rush 3 maybe 4? We knew Monte was Tampa 2 but what are we doing this year? Honest question, honestly?

I suggest you see 1. Ole Miss game 2. Auburn game 3. Florida game 4. V-Tech game 5. Kentucky game

Those are off the top of my head. And Monte also had Dan Williams, Hughes, Walls, and Brown at DT. While we have Hughes and a bunch of guys that have no business playing DT.

Look what the great Monte Kiffin's defense is doing this year.

When you only have 1 string of players you give up yards against anybody...

Just like everybody else it just takes until our guys get tired and the field opens up all of the sudden. Keep in mind.. These defensive starters are also playing all the special teams as well because we don't have anybody else to do it.

Exactly. Oregon and Florida, I get it. I do. Those are better teams. But over 500 yards against UAB? That is the Defensive Coordinator's fault.

with a 1st round DT in front of them and a 1st round safety supporting them

I guess that is the same excuse the Gators are using. They lost like 10 guys-starters to the NFL on defense and are still winning. Hopefully, one year we will get back to reloading!! :cray:

We have no depth on D and our offense couldn't stay on the field. hmmmm i wonder what the problem was.

Fact is the D won this game.

Sack up

Now your argument gets even better. Do you really want to compare the Florida situation with the UT situation?

Just saying, they lost a ton to the NFL and the newbies for them have just stepped up so far.

I think personally what has everybody so pissed on this board about Wilcox is that once he was hired, he was known to have a killer defense with average players, walk-on's and no 4 & 5 stars "Boise" BUT field great defenses with what he had. Nobody on this board doesn't reconize that we have severe depth problems and inexperience at all positions, BUT i think everybody was expecting better coaching then what we have seen so far. Boise has no depth either and no 4 & 5 star players but they get after it and blitz so much if you watch them it is not even funny. Not trying to bash DD, Wilcox and Chaney but some of the plays have me going hummmmmmm????

their backups last year would have started at most schools. That's who they are reloading with while we had to scramble for Juco's, transfers and players playing out of position

Actually, he had a team that had almost 0 turnover, meaning he continually had players that he had coached and not had to worry about depth or playing walk-ons. TN does not have that luxury. We replaced Dan Williams and Wes Brown with Victor Thomas and 2 defensive ends and even are having to substitute not only a freshman DT but a 265 LB Walk-ON Freshman DT.

But once again, you fail to realize that the Florida and Boise St's comparison to where we are right now at UT is like comparing Steak to liver cheese.

He can't make tackles for em. We were in position, sadly they had better athletes.
