I've read all about the first year struggles converting defenses from 4-3 to 3-4. Bama and UGA most recently. Both of them did even worse their first using it before it paid dividends. But come on, it's still just assignment football right?
Any actual players or coaches in here that can shine some light on this?

Actually UGA improved 15 spots in Total Defense and Bama stayed about the same in their first years.

Also last 3 games we have played we have been in 4 man fronts almost the entire time.

It's not a very complicated defense, but most teams don't have all the players. We have Sal who has not called too many good games.

well, we had 4 of the 5 losses on the ropes (all in the top 15, and except #1) ... i don't believe in moral victories, but I believe we're getting better.

What's sad is that, without the defensive scheme change, i bet we're 7-1 or 6-2, but we'll never know

The 3-4 is pretty tough, especially when Sal's scheme requires MLB's to cover WRs. I swear the most frustrating thing about this season is the realization that had we not changed D-schemes we might very well be 7-1.

As many holes that we have on the field, im not sure that Sal didnt take this job thinking that we get to play with 13 players on every down.

We weren't going to compete for SEC east this year nor next year so why not go for it. I also believe Hart had a hand in "encouraging" Dooley to hire Sal at the end of the search so it's on him too. Which leads me to believe that unless we were losing games we weren't supposed to and not staying in any games at all he was understanding about what it would be.

The 3-4 isn't any more difficult, like all teams we're running multiple sets. It takes time to transition and the fact that our secondary has been terrible has really hindered what our front 7 can do and putting our lb's in bad cover and pursuit situations. Simply put we are not as bad overall on defense as the numbers say, our secondary is a trash fire and really dragging our whole D down with their play because we're having to limit so much. Our secondary was bad last year, transitioning just makes it worse.

Progress isn't linear and we're showing, especially our front 7, good progress inspite of what's behind them.

We don't run a 3-4. We are multiple

Vols have been playing more 4-3 and 4-2-5 lately, it still doesn't matter when the safety is constantly out of position. 3-4, 4-3 or 4-2-5, they are still very poorly coached. This is the worse defense that I can ever recall wearing orange, and that goes back to the late seventies, just have too many missed and broken assignments week after week in the secondary.

Yes ...the worst .
Might be easier if we just stood in a prevent and rushed 4 guys....on every play. Might make it a little tougher to score 40 on us.

3 - 4 is very complicated (very effective) and these guys saying it's not are idiots!! All 4 linebackers have to be GOOD and on the same page every play!! If you have 1 maybe 2 good LB's it ain't gonna work!! I'm also a STEELERS fan so I have watched this defense since 1982....The nose tackle has to be a monster like Mccullers.....Casey Hampton type....this is the the 2nd must have in a 3 - 4!! We have the nose tackle and 1 LB that fits the bill....LB has to be able to cover a pass and move down to DE when needed!! Again AJ is the only one we have built for this type of D!! Zone blitzing schemes are a must to confuse the offense in 3 - 4 and I have yet to see this happen but it is very complex to learn...I have seen Pittsburgh DEVELOP LB's just for this....maybe some of the young guys can adapt but it ain't going to happen in 6 months!!

We have the athletes in the secondary....like I said above, you can't learn in 6 months especially with NO seniors that haven't been in 1 scheme for an entire year!! Poorly coached can't be determined this soon...experience is the key to any defense....I don't care if you're in a 3 - 4, 46 or 1 - 5 - 5!! Our coaching staff has had literally 6 months to teach this so it ain't fair to judge players or coaches yet!!

Dooley is an offensive/special teams guy and our O is as good as anyone....our fanbase isn't patient enough for this defense to build!!

poor angles and weak attempts at tackling in the open field isn't helping our cause either...

Alabama finished 31st in total defense and 27th in scoring in Nick Saban's first year.

Georgia finished 23rd in total defense and 26th in scoring defense in Todd Grantham's first year.

UT is currently 99th in total defense and 101st in scoring in Sal Sunseri's first year.

Quit with the excuses. The results speak for themselves.

As someone who really doesn't understand football, it would seem to me that for this defensive scheme to work the right personnel must be in place. Perhaps it is more of a personnel issue than one of not getting it.

We don't get enough pressure on the QB. Like was mentioned yesterday, why not play man coverage and blitz every play. We could not be any worse off.

Change.... It's Time!

We either have retards playing in the secondary (we don't) or the coaches are not doing their job teaching these men how to line up properly and how to read the offense. Our guys run around in the secondary like the keystone cops, watch Bama and see how their players react and get into position to make plays. That is because their players are taught sound fundamentals and our players are not.
