I’m going to keep saying it until you non-basketball, UT fanboys get it through your impossibly thick skulls that he’s terrible on defense and average on offense. That has to be one of the all-time worst basketball takes that I have seen on this board. And that is quite a list to be on top of....so congrats on that!
you have got to be the most miserable person on this entire board and that’s saying a lot.I’m going to keep saying it until you non-basketball, UT fanboys get it through your impossibly thick skulls that he’s terrible on defense and average on offense.
Not once in my lifetime have I seen a true center who could play basketball at Tennessee. We’ve had some pretty good 6’8” and 6’9” guys man the center position, but anyone 6’11” or taller has had difficulty walking and chewing gum.
Not to validate your existence, but he was still in a lot of pain and recovering early in the season. He didn't jump much or even move his feet much on defense. Contrast that with his last game or his game against Edey in the tournament, and it's pretty easy to see that he is a different player healthy than hobbled. He's a Sophomore, coming off a surgery. Give it a minute before you rage mount anyone else. Everyone saw his lack of mobility early in the season. Some of us understood that there is a context for that information. He has a much higher ceiling than Aidoo or Alexander if he can stay healthy. Evolve.I don’t think I’m mistaken on this. I’ve been watching that kid get beat since Illinois shot layup after layup on us at the Bridgestone Arena.
Are you thinking I’ve calling him an all-SEC caliber player? I don’t choose to name call nor argue on here, but there’s probably a reason you’re on an island with your opinion concerning JP. CRB and staff are pretty good at what they do and they’re playing him big minutes for a reason. Does he need to continue to improve - absolutely. Is he our best low post scorer - all the stats say yes.I don’t think I’m mistaken on this. I’ve been watching that kid get beat since Illinois shot layup after layup on us at the Bridgestone Arena.
A sophomore would be a second year player. Estrella has been playing with this team since 2023. I understand that he lost almost all of last season, but if he’s hurt to the point that he can’t keep up with his man, then he shouldn’t be out there. Not to validate your existence, but he was still in a lot of pain and recovering early in the season. Another case of HOW one posts is important.,,,,you have got to be the most miserable person on this entire board and that’s saying a lot.
It wouldn’t be worth posting if it wasn’t either controversial or commendable. Are you thinking I’ve calling him an all-SEC caliber player? I don’t disagree with anything in this post.It wouldn’t be worth posting if it wasn’t either controversial or commendable.
I like his baby hook shot. It’s pretty reliable for that range and he gets it off quickly. I have pulled my hair over the inside misses. It’s clear to me that JP is struggling with injury and he needs to figure out how to use the backboard better if he’s not able to be explosive enough to dunk when he gets inside position.
If he’ll just figure out how to block some shots and stop getting body check fouls against smaller players, JP will be alright. I wonder if he can do that this season if he’s struggling with injury though.
For the center, being a rim protector is a requirement in Barnes’s defense first system. Finishing at the rim is very important secondly. The mid range scoring is icing on the cake, but we have another good team whose weakness continues to be the center position.
Ament has eased a lot of our flaws with his versatility. However, it seems to me that we have not looked like a team with a size advantage when it comes to shutting down the paint.. and we do have a height advantage on most teams.
At present time, JP is the most talented offensive player we have a the 5 position. He and the others who play down under, all foul too much in the paint on defense, but JP has the better range on offense and his jump hook shot is accurate. When he is healthy he is are best option followed by Brown. Brown is beginning to come along and is a very strong player.Another case of HOW one posts is important.,,,,
Hard to generate value add with posts like this. FROM THE PAST…..

JP Estrella OUT tonight
We’ve been a better team without Estrella, same as last year. Take your time getting healthy, buddy!

Which begs, why hasn’t he been rested. He’s still running through workouts, according to the latest report. How about a walking boot and no physical activity for an extended period? Reevaluate.I try not to comment on injuries in a way that would infringe on privacy. it doesn't take a detective to note that JP has been very cautious with his lower body over the early part of this season, and played a game that is limited due to that. I've pointed out before that the physical aggression and jumping we recall from his Freshman year have been absent. Over the last couple of weeks, he began to move people with his lower body, rebound better, pivot strongly from back to goal position, and jump on shots. Soreness is not a great sign. The positive results of the X-ray aren't a complete picture. Foot surgeries for big athletes are particularly dicey as the required healing period doesn't delineate when it's safe to fully return to all action. These kids know how to play through pain, but you can't do that with a foot post surgery. I hope he heals and plays, but I really hope his foot can heal fully long term.
