Josiah James Impact Next Year?

What if the "worst case" happens and we lose both Bone and Williams? Of course we'reMUCH better with both or even one of them returning but the starting 5 is still a decent team without them. Not counting any grad-transfer additions....

James
Turner
Bowden
Walker
Fulkerson

Pons
Johnson
Burns
Gaines
Pember

Seeing that it takes time for Barnes to develop his 3star kids, I'd question our bench...again. That looks like an NIT group to be honest.

I think James is the only freshman ready for a big season next year. We may have another player coming in have to wait and see what Grant does or who transfers. I hope we look at any grad transfers that could help immediately and of course have to hope players like Pons and Fulkerson will develop into big time players. If Burns can give us around a double double or at least as good or better minutes that we got from Alexander I see no drop off if Grant comes back. I know Admiral is a bigtime player but I think James can fill his role well enough to make us a contender for the title again.
Kentucky a lot of losses, Auburn will lose a couple, I expect the big guy freshman at LSU to go Pro, maybe some defections because of pay to play. Our biggest scare is having to replace Grant hopefully Barnes has a plan.

Right now I saw a mock draft that listed Grant as number 20 first rounder don't see him coming back with that money right there to be collected.

The last 2 I’ve seen, doesn’t have Grant as 1st rd grade.

Rebounding is a lot of want to more so than height. Get a 6'8" guy with some dog in him and he will give you as much or more than Alexander. Length really helps on defense though. Alexander could influence shot with that length....when he wasn't sitting next to Barnes and he felt like playing. No idea what we have with the "bigs" Barnes has on the roster. At least we have one blue chip to go with our other recruits with "potential". Barnes had better start winning on the recruiting trail. Roster is going to need some real talent sooner rather than later.
When are you people going to start to open your eyes instead of your mouth?

Barnes has already proven that you sit back and trust him where it pertains to talent evaluation. Furthermore, he has landed a 5⭐️ player in the 2019 and 2020 class, now. He’s gonna he fine.

Well, if the status quo was acceptable, then your point would be valid. But it isn't. We rank 266th in the country in defensive rebounding.

So, the rebounding has to get better. I think we need a different formula.

Lol do you not READ?
The top rebounder in the SEC is Hall from Bama who is 6-9
8 of the top 9 rebounders in the country are 6-9 and under
But you think that 6-8 or 6-9 can’t get it done?

No, perhaps you should LEARN to read. What I am saying is that our current collection of such players isn’t getting it done.

And, I would especially like to see us bigger than 6-7 at the 4-spot in the future along with a dynamic true big man.

Don't you think Walker slides into the lineup next year? I like Johnson but he is going to have a hard time getting minutes. Walker and Burns play if Williams leaves.
Burns plays regardless and Walker prob gets more minutes.......if Williams leaves Tennessee I assume it will be Burns, And Fulk/walker splitting time but there are many others who prob know how it will work out, as I’m just guessing.

I certainly read you post......quoting mine, and I was responding saying you don’t have to have huge players..... heck Tennessee’s 6-11 guy prob isn’t getting it done like he should. I also backed my point up with facts stating that most of the best rebounders in the country are 6-7 to 6-9. Tennessee simply needs good players who are good rebounders, not necessarily 6-10, 6-11 guys.

I totally agree about the talent level. That is why I think last season and this one is huge.

Howard Bayne was 6'5 and on of the best rebounders in the Nation when he played @ Tennessee when Mears was coaching here.

No, Burns was still growing when he got here is around 6’10” and over 255, something Kyle could never achieve. Had burns stayed in HS there is a good chance he’d have been a top 50 player.
Walker will contribute but Burns has way more to offer.

If somehow Bone and Williams come back this team could be better. Fulk will make a jump and the only thing holding him back is his lack of girth. Another year in the weight room, watch out. Walker will hopefully take a step. So, Grant, Burns, Fulk and Walker with another year in S&C could be better than what we have now.

If Bone comes back James could step right into the three and might even bring a better scoring threat.

I agree. If Williams and Bone come back ( and hopefully even Turner comes back) I think this team should not take a step back.

Admiral will be hard to replace right away just from is normal passion and leadership, and unique skills (shooting, and posting) but Alexander stayed in foul trouble too much. If Burnes can be “just” as good as Alexander but stay out of foul trouble Tennessee may be better with that, a more experienced Bone, Bowden, Turner, Williams, Faulk, and then throw in their new 6ft 10 guard.

Burns is going to play a lot regardless of who stays.

Pember is a HUGE project. This kid wasn’t getting a look from any power conference. Also, he doesn’t do much inside for his HS team. He’s not even the best player on his team.

Barnes did a great job developing Grant and Admiral, but to my mind, that was "laying a foundation" and changing the culture at UT. He's certainly accomplished that, but we lose Alexander and Admiral this year. There's no certainty that we won't lose more. We now have to hope James is all of the 5 star he reported to be and the current crop of developmental/project players will evolve the way Grant and Admiral did. The question is how long will that take? A year? Two? How long with James stay?

Barnes has set the tone and bar for this program. Now he should be able to set a bar in recruiting, too. I'm not saying he needs to get a class filled with 5 stars every year, but I certainly hope he can get players in the class who won't need 2 years to "develop" to go along with the James caliber of recruits I hope he also continues to sign.

I’ve always wondered how good he was because I’ve not seen him play.i asked how good he was in the FF out of curiosity and they were all pretty optimistic about him.i do really hope we offer Glover because after bone leaves we will Be left without any decent “true” point guards.

I guess it depends on what you call "true". JJJ is a point guard. Yes he can play 2 or 3 or 4 because of his size, but he's always been a point guard, that's what he was recruited to play, and that's what he expects to play. He has as good pg skills as you'll find. I think his size is throwing you off. He's a "true" point guard", just taller than the rest.

I guess you could say “John Stockton” type I’m old school.i like to have a floor general on the court.one who could penetrate and score when he needs to and pass when he sees fit.any point guard who can score at will but not care to get assists is a “true” point guard to me that's why I enjoy watching Josh Bone so much.times have changed a course and you don’t see many “true” point guards being used anymore just all shooters kinda makes the game a little flat in my opinion but it is what it is.hopefully we offer Glover though

Disagree. Fulky is perfect in the role he is in now. The hope is Burns or the kid From Georgia can hopefully reclassify to fill KA's spot.
Walker? I haven’t seen any comments suggesting he could reclassify.

Walker Kessler? It’s been mentioned multiple times as a possibility, though nothing definitive.

No offense to the players on our bench, but I really think we have a couple or three who would be better off somewhere else. If one or more departs, getting Kessler to reclassify would be enormous.
