On-the-Clock Mock: Sam Dekker and Josh Richardson - Peachtree Hoops

I looked through a bunch of nba mock drafts, and none of them have Richardson getting drafted. This was a sold article I saw today discussing how Richardson is unfairly getting overlooked. Hes a competitor and he has gotten better every year. If he was a five star prospect out of Duke, there is no doubt that he is a top 20 Draft Pick.

He went up to 19th on a list of Seniors today. He'll rise a bit more in most mocks. Should be a solid 2nd rounder imo. Very versatile guy. Hope he doesn't slip through the cracks.

He is talented and athletic BUT the NBA is a numbers game.
the draft is only 2 rounds deep. He would have to showcase his talent not only against college seniors but Underclassmen that declare for the draft & International players.
I don't see him being drafted.

Richardson is a really solid player. Top 5 in the SEC, IMO. A total team player who also has the ability to carry the load and play multiple positions. I don't watch the NBA at all, but I think he would be very good in the kind of old-school team ball philosophy like the Spurs have.

He isnt a true PG --- scouts should consider him a shooting guard in the draft - so I would say mid to late 2nd rd. would be nice

Looking at Richardson vs. McRae, IMO Richardson is a better NBA prospect. Much better ball handler. Better at driving the ball. Night and day difference in defense capabilities. Comparing the 2, I would take Richardson. Wouldn't have said that last year though. Not knocking McRae at all though.

I think he'll be drafted and spend some time in the d league and get a shot. Has good size and quick hands, I would draft him but I'm a homer 😊

IF Richardson is drafted at all, it will be in the second round. Whether he's drafted or not, he will find a permanent spot on a roster somewhere. Luckily, he possesses enough of the right qualities that are required of players to stick on a NBA roster for many years. When I think of Richardson's pro potential, I see a Tony Allen type of player at the worst. I do believe his potential and ceiling is a bit higher than Tony's was coming out of college. That is especially true on the offensive side of the ball. The difference between the two is Richardson is a couple inches taller, has a better shot, and a better handle on him too. I'm not quite sure who is the more athletic of the two. I do know it would be hard to argue that Richardson is any less athletic though.

This is where his value lies, I think. He's a relentless lockdown defender, yet has the ability to be an asset on offense. Excellent personal character and leadership characteristics. Tremendous teammate. No ego to speak of. Blue-collar, not blue-chip.

I wonder what a team full of Josh Richardsons would look like.

I would be shocked if he does not get drafted. I see him being a guy that is taken late first round or second round but getting a huge second contract. Someone like Trevor Ariza or Manu Ginobili in his younger years. There is always a spot for a guy who can cover 1 through 3 and he has only improved his stock by playing point guard. I feel Josh is a rare find as a lock down defender but also has potential to score double digits every game. There are lock down defenders in the game right now that do not score like Thabo Sefalosha. I used to follow the NBA heavily and defense can be what earns a guy a career in the NBA. Vincent Yarbrough no defense no career, Chuck Hayes defense solid career.

Josh will play small forward in the NBA. He has the potential to be overlooked by scouts this year though. He isn't playing his natural position and we don't run a man defense. On the flip, playing pg has given an opportunity to showcase his versatility.

The problem becomes that you have to find a group of scouts that have dedicated time to knowing all about a senior guard, because there is a lot of depth to Josh, his talent and most of all, his development.

My guess is that he will lock down a big time prospect in a pre draft workout and walk out of it with some scouts impressed enough to look into him deeper, and when they do, they will see what vol fans already know, that Josh Richardson is an NBA player

Crossing my fingers that he ends up a Laker. Reminds me sometimes of what Ariza was when he first joined the Lakers. Except Josh won't be as good of a 3 point shooter.

Tobias Harris is a small forward in the NBA why would Josh Richardson be a small forward and not a shooting guard? Joe Johnson is a shooting guard and he is much bigger than Josh.

I'd love for Josh to end up a Grizzly. The best team for him career wise is probably the Spurs though. Pop could develop him into a borderline all-star.

if he was a 5*, we'd have been pissed for 2.9 years and right now we'd be saying that he still should be playing better but at least he's starting to look like what the experts said years ago

And what did all the experts say years ago? I doubt any of the so called experts ever predicted Richardson would become the player he is today. Wasn't he just a lowly 3 star prospect coming out of HS?

Just because a basketball player is a 3* doesn't mean that experts don't think he can become good, it's just that he has stuff that he has to work on. I'd assume that scouts thought he was a guy who would play 4 seasons in college, become a starter whether by necessity or seniority, and eventually make a significant contribution for a middle-of-the-pack major conference team or the upper crust of mid majors

I want to see Richardson guard McRae in the summer league.

I feel like the UT fandom would explode.

The NBA wants its role players to be specialists. Well-rounded players who aren't exceptional in any one area are typically overlooked. Richardson might stick as a defensive specialist, but there's just as good of a chance that he ends up in Europe.
