Josh Dobbs - NFL Draft thread (merged)

Louis Riddick showing some love for Dobbs on Mike and Mike this morning...

"He was not in a system or had the coaching that was conducive to success at Tennessee."

No argument there.

-Set UT records for career rushing yards by a quarterback (2,160), career rushing touchdowns by a QB (32), single-season rushing yards by a QB (831 in 2016) and single-season rushing touchdowns by a QB (12 in 2016). His 2,160 rushing yards also rank 14th among all players in program history.

-His 7,138 career passing yards rank fifth in Tennessee history and his 9,360 yards of total offense (7,138 passing, 2,160 rushing, 62 receiving) rank third in program history behind only Peyton Manning (11,020) and Casey Clausen (9,577)

-His 3,781 yards of total offense (2,946 passing, 831 rushing, 4 receiving) in 2016 ranks second in Tennessee history only to Peyton Manning's 3,789 in 1997

-Joined Mississippi State's Dak Prescott and Florida's Tim Tebow as the only SEC quarterbacks to record 15 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in multiple seasons

-Is one of only four quarterbacks in SEC history to have 50 career passing touchdowns and 25 career rushing touchdowns. The others are Florida's Tim Tebow, Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel and Mississppi State's Dak Prescott.

He was only 9 yards shy last year of breaking Peyton Manning's record of total offense in a season. If anything, I think the system was perfect for him.

Seems to me that the system was tailored for JD. Now, if they were discussing Nathan Peterman, that would be very appropriate.

I keep hearing about "the system" being a problem for JD, but I agree 100% with you.

the only thing i would say was not done the way it should have was the lack of a true QB coach. i've never heard anything bad about Nick Sheridan, but it's a GA/QC job they had running QB's.

past that, i don't think it's an issue of under utilization. but may be some missed opportunities development wise.

Kamara will be the one that always circles back to under utilized.

dobbs set records in that offense. you couuld argue there's some missed opportunities development wise....but not production/utilization wise.

If anything held him back it was poor pass protection for a large part of his career. If the OL had been better he would have been able to redshirt and would be a senior this year and barring injury it would be crazy what he might have done. Also the receiving corps didn't come around until the emergence of Jennings. I would agree that having a for real QB coach may have helped some too. But Josh had a phenomenal career so to say he was held back consequentially is radio shock jock talk.

What would Mike and Mike know about this? They are just entertainment.
Gruden would more likely be able to tell that and he did not mention it

When talking about Dobbs they said the coaches and the system held him back.

Best staff in the country..

First several on here wanted Dobbs benched for Dormady after the first couple of games because he apparently couldn't throw. Then his stats were good with some portions being matched up with Peyton, Tebow and Dak and then the excuses were but he still had two bad games + missed several throws. Then VN moved on to the discussion on how he couldn't possibly get drafted as a QB and needed to move to WR to have a successful career. Now he is being projected as a 2nd round pick and the last ditch effort is well if he really didn't suck, he couldn't be as good as the stats portrayed (cause let's face it he lost to Candy, USC jr. and almost to Appy St.) the smoking gun had to have been this crappy system (which in the last two seasons has produced records in season rushing yards and points scored in a season) that Dobbs thrived in.

:lolabove: This is about as laughable as American politics.

Remember, Mike and Mike are just characters playing a role for BSPN. They have no thoughts of their own but they are just pushing the daily agenda laid out by Bristol through their characters.

BSPN is a much worse version of the WWE. At least the characters in the WWE that are pushing the storylines are the focus of the show unlike some talking head in Bristol who thinks they are the focus.

one Mike went to Brown, I think...two Mike went to Notre Dame...talking heads...neither know ****...that's history anyway...:)

GO VOLS!

I do not listen to Nerd and Jock but in what context did they mean "the system held Josh Dobbs back." Did they mean the system held Josh back in developing as a NFL QB or did they mean the system held Josh back from producing as a college QB? For example, Urban Meyer's system isn't great for developing NFL QBs but good for producing good college QBs.

Regarding the coaches comment....with the way our OL played and the way our receivers are raw (according the NFL scouts), there's some validity there.

All the draft experts at ESPN are starting to sound like me. :)

I told ya'll Butch Jones and the o-line held Josh back. We only ever got glimpses into Josh's true potential when we fell behind by a lot and Butch Jones was forced to scrap his original gameplan and just lets Dobbs be Dobbs. That is usually when we played our best football.

Once Josh gets real coaching in the NFL and better talent on the offensive line and at wide receiver, he will take his game to another level. The sky is the limit for him. He can be the best QB in the NFL if he wants.
