Josh Dobbs (merged)

Brady and Montana weren't memorable college QBs either. There's a reason they went in the 3rd and 6th round respectively.

The most noteworthy college QBs rarely develop into the greatest QBs of all-time.

Brady? Not really.

Montana...won a national title and yes he wasn't highly rated by scouts, he still was well known in the college football world before he made it in the NFL.

Dobbs' ceiling has pretty much always been a second stringer, and more likley a career 3rd string type guy. So unless you had insane, unreleastic expectations (*cough*), seems like this isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, you're dumb to think Dobbs isn't going to be the bestest ever for all time.

It took an injury for Tom Brady (the alleged GOAT) to become a starter ahead of decent but not amazing NFL QB Drew Bledsoe.

Kurt Warner was cut by the Packers and it took an injury to Trent Green (a very average QB for his entire career) for him to start.

If took injuries for those 2 Hall of Fame QBs to see the field ahead of inferior starters. How can you deny that NFL front offices are incompetent?

All Dobbs needs is a chance and I'm confident he will be like Tom Brady and Kurt Warner. He'll win the Super Bowl and MVP as a starter.

Wow, 2 whole examples; you're right those 2 examples completely outweigh all those other examples of them getting it right from Day 1.

Also, Warner was backing up Favre. Last time I checked he had a pretty good career, so how is the Packers' front office incompetent? They also sent Favre packing and started the guy they drafted to replace him, who's still getting it done and also won a Super Bowl. Sounds like they know exactly what they're doing.

I'm sure Dobbs will land on his feet at NASA, SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, JPL, Bigelow Aerospace etc...

You do know you're talking about lightning strike kind of odds?

No. I know Dobbs talent. He just needs a shot. Injuries happen all the time in football. Remember it took injuries for him to start at Tennessee. Then the rest was history.

Once Dobbs gets that first start in the NFL his legend will take off.

Peyton Manning
John Elway
Drew Brees
Roger Staubach (yep, going back that far)
Steve Young
Terry Bradshaw
Dan Marino

All had memorable college careers .. heck, you could make the case that Montana did have a memorable career at Notre Dame simply because of some of the late game heroics the dude showed .. NDs offense wasn't much of a passing offense at that time but when they needed clutch, Montana was clutch.

Dobbs has had a memorable college career. As a dawgs fan you should know that since his most memorable moments have come against you team. He had an epic 300 yard passing and 100 yards rushing game in a come from behind victory against Georgia in 2015 and then in 2016 he had the memorable Hail Mary to Jauan Jennings. That's arguably the most memorable play in Tennessee history since the win over Florida in the Swamp in 2001.

Dobbs also broke Peyton Manning's school record for TDs in a season in 2016. He led Tennessee to a school record for points scored in 2016. And he's 2nd all-time in Tennessee history for career TDs behind Peyton Manning.

Sure he doesn't have a Heisman Trophy or National Championship on his resume but neither do most of the guys you listed. Dobbs owns many Tennessee records and has had many memorable games and moments in college.

He's not a college legend but he's definitely a memorable player.

All that and he will still never take a meaningful snap in the NFL. You never answered a question I asked some time back. What in your background should make us think you know what you're talking about? You've proved that QBs are something you know NOTHING about but the other positions, what is it that should make us think this anything other than you playing make believe?

Lol, and the dancing begins....

Once again, you don't know how predictions work. You're already setting it up that when your prediction doesn't come true, you're just going to decry that the entire NFL let the greatest QB in history slip through their hands.

Also the bold...yes, a history that while good wasn't even remotely close to the lofty predictions you made. 0 Heismans, 0 National Titles, 0 SEC Championships, 0 SEC East division titles.

"BUT BUT BUT BUTCH JONES!" Cram it, you didn't qualify your predictions.

Tyrod Taylor is an incredible athlete. And it's his athleticism (much like Russell Wilson) that allows him to be successful in the NFL despite being undersized.

Baker Mayfield is a bad athlete. His combine number in the 40 yard dash and vertical jump were awful.

Mayfield is a bad athlete? Didn’t look like it when the 800 1st round NFL draft picks you said littered Tennessee’s defense couldn’t tackle him, at any point, a couple years ago in Neyland.

And again, you expose your vast inability to understand what makes a good/great nfl qb. It ain’t athletic ability kid, otherwise, Ryan Leaf, Jeff George, Vince Young, Cam Newton and Jake Locker would be all-time greats.....yet, none of them are or will ever be. Instead, the NFL HOF will soon add guys like Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady their institution....guys who are slow as molasses and who you couldn’t slide an index card under their feet when checking their vertical jump.

Btw, while Russell Wilson is a special qb, only partially because of his athletic ability (his IQ, competitiveness and arm accuracy are far more important), Tyrod Taylor is not....and if Mayfield somehow doesn’t win the job from Taylor prior to opening day, he very much will soon thereafter.

I seem to remember this differently. We ran out of options in front of Dobbs... preventing Butch from red shirting him. Both years.

It's a little different to say, uh-oh here comes the back-up vs. Yay! the guy who we know is more athletic...

You'll see just how bad Butch Jones was this year when Pruitt wins 10 games with far less talent.

Dobbs is now on the Steelers. A team with a super bowl winning coach. And a tradition of winning. If Big Ben (who isn't really that good) can win 2 Super Bowls, then Dobbs can easily 3-4.

The NFL is where greatness expresses itself. That is why I'm so confident.

After seeing that prediction I feel much better now 10 wins -- Im ready for them after reading that gloom and doom thread in the FF

Yeah, seeing the guy who picked UT to win the NC the past 2 years say we'll win 10 games this year is quite comforting.

Being "slippery" doesn't make you athletic. When Mayfield played us in 2015, he did not run on our defense. He just happened to slip a couple of sure sacks. Having watched many of his games since then, it looks like it was just a one day fluke performance. Both Clemson and Georgia had no problems tackling him. If you think Baker Mayfield is gonna be able to run around in the NFL, you are sorely mistaken.

And FTR, the only way Mayfield plays ahead of Tyrod Taylor next year is if the coaching staff forces him on the field like the Bills did Nathan Peterman.

Tyrod Taylor is a much better QB than Baker Mayfield will ever be.

And what exactly makes a qb “slippery”? Quick feet? Good/excellent lateral movement? Speed? Strength?

Any of those the traits of the mark of a good athlete? Nah, of course not, right?

We’ll see about who winds up being the better QB, between Mayfield and Taylor. I actually like Tyrod, I think he’s a pretty serviceable nfl qb. But I definitely got my money on Baker.

Expect to lose money then cause Baker Mayfield is gonna be a huge bust.

He'll be the only QB selected in the 1st round that doesn't develop into a decent starter.

In addition, I expect a couple of Day 3 QBs to be better than him as well. Kyle Lauletta (Giants) and Logan Woodside (Bengals). Look for both those guys to be huge steals.

The two biggest question marks with Mayfield is:

Size.

He's playing for the Browns.

if the line can protect him, I think he'll do okay. He can scramble, but that only takes you so far in the NFL and only for so long in your career.

But...

It's the Browns.

I don't know which statement is dumber, that Roethlisberger "isn't that good" or that Dobbs can win 4 Super Bowls.
