Jones: Finding OC all about fit

Butch will stay the course. He may bring in a name to keep many fans happy, but he will never turn complete control over to anyone to implement a new offensive scheme. That's what he has done in the past and he will continue to do in the future. He will stay the course.

Has any head coach in the history of football ever given "complete control" to a coordinator? No.

There's nothing wrong with the Tennessee offensive system. It's probably fair to criticize the play calling in many of the games, but that's not the system. It obvious from the offensive output in total that the system is quite capable.

They just need a coach to help execute better and more consistently.

The most important aspect of an OC is to play the chess game with the opponent's DC. He has to be able to understand what the defense is doing and know which plays in his arsenal best exploit it. The DC's doing the same thing. You have to avoid becoming predictable, which, for some reason, was a challenge for Tennessee at times. I don't think that is a reflection of the "system," but rather the planning and play calling.

imho the most important thing for the new OC is going to be the development of the Oline and the QBs between now and September. Butch's general preferences on offensive scheme are fine. That being said, he is not going to find that guy in house.

The last time he said the same thing, we ended up with an Olympic swim coordinator who had an office in a broom closet somewhere in Michigans upper peninsula

Yeah, and we could have had Matt Canada or Lincoln Riley, too.

Anyone who thought Butch was gonna change his offense was naive. He will hire a no name and give him the same 8 plays that Debord had.

I thought the game-plan was to run up the middle on the first 2 downs and then throw a flat pass on 3rd and long. Where are the other 6 plays for which you mention?
I thought A Rod was being a bit generous myself.

I'm okay finding a coach that fits his style. The last thing he should do is bring in a coach with an entire different style and philosophy to what we've been running. Remember Sunseri?

If his main priority is to win championships then he brings someone in who is "smarter" than him in terms of offensive scheme and lets them make changes. If his goal is survival then he brings in someone to run his system, his way just like he did with Debord. The system is still unlikely to produce against better opponents... but is probably the better odds for Jones to save his job in the short term.

Someone edited Helfrich's info on Wikipedia, saying he's the OC at Tennessee. :tease2:

I don't like being a pessimist, but if what I am hearing is true that it will be an internal promotion, then I have to start thinking whether Jones wants to be here or if he is trying to get the buy out. I have a hard time believing someone is trying to get fired, but I also believe UTK is a school where you can bring in a top tier OC. Butch not doing that-if that is what happens-tells me he does not want to be here.

I agree with you....but I don't think CBJ will survive a 7-5 season next year....I think you've posted somewhere else that CBJ has left 4 wins on the field (2 in 2015, 2 in 2016)....

If all of our guys on D return and make it thru the season...we will still be deficient at LB and at CB....

Who knows what we will get on offense....lots of talent...but we thought that coming into this season...

Helfrich would be the IDEAL hire if you want to IMPROVE your system......that dude has bona fide credentials as an OC....

But I will predict that CBJ will hire a "yes-man" and finish 2017 at no better than 8-4...7-5 is what I actually think will happen....and that will SILENCE any and all garbage CBJ attempts to sell on the recruiting trail....and that would be the final nail in his coffin....or should be!

His tenure here is like Jim Donnan's at UGA....time to find someone else who can compete with the better programs....:salute:

And all he did was come in and help our offense break a slew of offensive records. Come on Count, you and I both know our offense is not the problem. Our defense couldn't stop anybody and our coach couldn't seem to get our guys ready to play on game day for half the season.

Why do you dudes keep mention this "record-setting" offense when it FAILED MISERABLY to out-score both S. Carolina and Vanderbilt?!!!!

You just can't see the forest for the trees.....

Because the UT offense did set school records. Why does actual stats bother you?

Stats don't bother me----drawing WRONG conclusions from stats does bother me.....

Case in point.....We set statistical records offensively.....but:

1. Barely scored enough to beat App. State....
2. Couldn't run away from OHIO....
3. Failed to get it done in OT against aTm...
4. Failed to outscore SCe...
5. Failed to outscore Vandy....

So--WOW--let us all celebrate how good this offense was when it failed to produce the most important stat of all-----Ws!

Sure.....Spurrier did to Stoops at Fla....

Ditka did to Buddy Ryan (Ditka really didn't have a choice, though! LOL)....

Bear Bryant did to Ken Donahue at Bama...

Fulmer did to Cutcliffe--in large part....and it really showed after Cutcliffe left the program....and when he came back, too!

:hi:

Jones is gonna micro-manage his way right out of Knoxville.....
