Jonathan Crompton... (merged)

Okay I'll be honest. My initial reaction about JC after yesterday is to sit him the rest of the season. But after I had a chance to think about it here's the way I feel about JC...he's had one good game this year and one bad game. Last year does not concern me because that is the past. If the coaches say he's the best then that's it, I have to trust their choice.

If he play's the rest of the year then we have to endure his failures as well as celebrate his successes. That's how I feel.

+1. I trust that CLK is putting his best players on the field.

He can't play under pressure. I'm talkin when the lights are on, its a big game, and we need a good performance. He does not have it mentally. We've heard how good he is in practice the last 4-5 years, yet see him sputter in games. He cannot perform under pressure, he cannot hold it together when one thing goes wrong, and he cannot get his confidence back. You heard what Holle Rowe reported after his 2nd pick. He was done. Yeah he tried to rally the troops, but you can tell in his eyes he was done. I'm not the coach, nor should I be, but I will say this. Crompton looked scared yesterday. He looked like "Oh crap, its happening again, I'm gonna fall flat on my face" etc. He just cannot handle the pressure of being a QB at a big-time school.

I felt something bad might happen when Cunningham kicked the opening K/O out of bounds.

if you sit crompton, his confidence will be completely gone... if you play him, he's going to repeat past performances.. I feel bad for the guy... it takes special players to make split second decisions in the sec..

I love Tennessee with a passion, but I could see us only winning 3 games this season with that kinda play cAlling

didnt see much wrong with play calling.. Kiffin gave crompton chances to get in a rhythm.. He failed at that.. so we had to pound the rock and keep us from turning the ball over.. Worked all the way to the 1 yard line. All we need is a passing presence to keep them from lining 8 in the box.

I was at the UCLA game last year and Crompton's play just about killed me. Yesterday brought up all those feelings again. Please bench him so we can put all this negativity behind us. Give Stephens a chance to prove us wrong.

Crompton is soooooo BAD. Instead of Eric Berry helping his campaign for the Heisman ,JC personally threw to UCLA's defensive back. Crompton needs to be benched. Even if he is our best shot, I don't see how we can get any worse. Florida will reach the century mark if our D doesn't show up. But again, i say this all falls back on Fulmer not getting quality players in here, especially at qb. Thanks Phil.

This is where I think your wrong on this one, that is what upsets me I think is I thought he would play the best players and last night made me think again.

"Best players" =/= "good players" when you're in rebuilding mode, as we are.

I've heard all the excuses over the last year and two games, from coaches, offensive schemes, offensive lineman, looks great on the practice field, confidence or lack there of, fan's booing, etc. etc...bottom line is Jonathan Crompton is just not very good! (nicest way to put it) I wish he was, from my observations the guy bleeds orange, and has handled the criticism and adversity with great character and class. He's endured more than I can even begin to imagine (100,000 plus booing, and cursing his every move, even recieving death threats), and yet he has always said, and done the right things. Publically, he hasn't pointed fingers or ran from the scrutiny. He's always taken the high road, and there's definitely something to be said for that. However, at the end of the day it's very apparent to me and others that Jon Crompton is not even close to being a servicable quarterback in major college football, and it's extremely hard to accept considering how highly-touted he was when he arrived on the hill. I remember the whispers from various media personel on David Cutcliffe's opinion of Crompton, I thought, "no way, no way the recruiting services missed on this guy THAT BAD!!" As it turns out, they did, and that's why it's so hard to accept that a guy who was supposed to be the next great signal caller on Rocky Top never came remotely close to meeting our expectations. All good/great teams have servicable to outstanding quarterback play depending on what that team needs in order to win. No matter the circumstances or who Tennessee puts around him, simplyfying schemes, fan's praising his every move, coaches and their decisions, his own work ethic, and all the other countless resolutions to Jon Crompton's inept play are pointless. At the end of the day, Jonathan Crompton is unable to play quarterback with any success at The University of Tennessee.

I went to the game yesterday, everytime he threw the ball the hole stadium held their breath, on the last posession, last down everybody in the stadium started chanting 'lets go crompton, what does he do, he ends the game with a bounce pass.

Oh my God. I did too. It looked like the same old crap starting over again. Nothing was going to go right for us, we can't even keep the opening kickoff inbounds for crying out loud. And another thing, on the first drive into the red zone we should have a touchdown if Crapton would not zone in on one receiver. The fullback was open in the shallow part of the endzone right in front of him and he looked past him to the TE and then almost had an INT. Geez.... that was the game

I know. That should shut up all the idiot "don't boo, that's not true Tennessee fans do" people.

Let's just be honest about Crompton.

Ok, you ask me to be honest about Crompton.

It's been a long time since I was 22 and I'm sure I see this differently from a lot of younger posters here.

If Crompton is like most young people, he has a lot of pressure on him. I don't think that he intended to play badly against UCLA and I'm sure he wanted to make plays and help his team win. But he didn't get it done.

Maybe he doesn't have what it takes to QB in the SEC. Most people don't. He tried and he failed, but he seems to be the best option UT has at this time.

While his play - or lack of it - against UCLA deserves criticism, personal insults and name calling are not much fun, especially when you are on the receiving end.

Giving the kid a break could be an option.

Yea even the announcers were confused. I had my UT hat over my face a lot during the game.

As my wife said, CLK is so worried about JC losing his confidence, well, what about the other player's confidence and the confidence of the fans? Do they not matter?

All three of Jonathan Crompton's interceptions were troubling, mostly since none of them were tipped at the line. The senior stared down receivers, overthrew open targets and then forced UT into a play-calling shell as it missed an opportunity to pick apart a young UCLA secondary.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but if i do, so be it. The kid has gotten plenty of breaks. We have. We gave him a new slate. Everyone blamed Fulmer/Clawson for his mistakes. We said that it was the O-Line. The WR's didn't run the right routes. We said that his confidence was shot because of Fulmer/Clawson. Now after this game, he has no one to blame but himself. We gave him plenty of breaks, so don't play that card.

He is total garbage.

And the sad thing is his attitude is even worse than his play on the field.

I don't think you are a jerk. Maybe my post wasn't clear enough. I wasn't saying give him a break for his poor play, I was referring to the name calling and such. He played poorly and the QB get the most attention and the most blame, that's life. If you can't handle it, find something else to do.

I was referring to the name calling/personal insults etc. And that's me being honest about Crompton or any other kid who plays college ball.
